Chapter 29 First Recruit Part 2

From what he told me, both his parents were dead and his father died when he was in college.

He had only gotten into college through a scholarship and because of his extraordinary potential and capability in American Football, but he quit to look after and provide for his three younger sisters.

It was clear that he loved them more than anything and quickly found a job on a construction site that he found he was very good at.

Just like those men said, he truly could do the job of 5 men, and for the price of one, with his extremely strong body.

They obviously not only became jealous, but very angry with him, since their boss massively lowered their pay.

Telling him to come early today so that they could show him something, it was very easy to trick the naive and simple-minded giant, or so it seemed.

Planning on beating him up until he couldn't work anymore so they could get paid more, if I hadn't shown up, they probably would've succeeded since he didn't show any signs of fighting back.

But he had his own reasons for not doing so.

-

His mother died while giving birth to his three sisters, who were triplets, while his father died 10 years later, leaving him to take care of the little girls.

Working all morning, then returning home to take his sisters to school, he would return to the construction site, before picking them up, taking them home, and spending the rest of the day with them.

He was an incredible individual, and it made me feel guilty about offering him to join my gang.

I believed in myself and what my gang would become, but his life seemed to be going well and I didn't want to ruin that for him.

"Anyway, Connor, I will leave you to get back to your work," I said to him, before turning to leave.

"What about you? Who are you taking care of?" he asked.

"What are you talking about?"

"I can just tell, that, like me, you have something you want to protect and provide for."

He seemed slow and definitely wasn't the smartest of people, but he surprised me there.

"My mother. I am not faring as well as you are, but I am trying," I answered.

"Well, good luck with that. I have got to go and start my work," he said as he headed back there.

He was slouched and had his head lowered, and from his tone, clearly didn't want to work at the construction site, but it was likely the only way he could provide for his sisters.

But what if it wasn't...

"What do you say you join me?" I asked him after he had begun heading back towards the construction site.

"Join you? What do you mean?"

I decided to answer directly and truthfully, "I want to become a gangster and form a gang. One that is wealthy and powerful so that those within it can protect and provide for those they care about and each other. As of right now, it is just me and if you're happy with your life as it is, then go off to your construction site and forget about what I just said. But if you want to build a future for not just your sisters, but yourself and generations to come, then join me."

I felt cool and corny at the same time as I gave him the short speech, but it seemed to work on such a simple-minded fellow who turned around to face me with a determined look in his eyes.

"I accept," he stated bluntly.

"What?!"

"Are you crazy? You don't even know me and for all you know, I could be tricking you. And what kind of lunatic accepts that kind of offer?"

How could I not be shocked and confused by how easy it was to recruit him?

"To be honest, everyone thinks I am dumb, and you probably do too, but I am not stupid," he said.

I was clearly puzzled by what he meant as he continued, "I didn't do well in school and have always been really bad at studying and understanding new concepts. But that doesn't mean I am naive."

"But those men...?"

"I knew they had bad intentions, but avoiding them would only cause their resentment to increase and cause me more trouble in the future. And fighting back with my strength could get me arrested. If that happened, who would be there to protect and provide for my sisters?"

I was lost for words and maybe he was smarter than he let on.

"Working as a builder my whole life is boring, and I always wanted to be a superstar footballer. I gave up on that which I regret, and I don't want to live with regrets any longer."

"You do know that as a gangster you may be risking your life, freedom, and everything else that you have to live for. Right?"

"But if you are gonna do it and you have something you cherish just as much as I do, why shouldn't I?"

"What kind of logic is that?!"

He doesn't know that I have the system and don't really have much of a choice in the matter, while I am also quite the reckless individual, and yet he still chooses to follow me.

"Do you want me to join you or not?" he asked, start to get annoyed.

I couldn't help but laugh, "Yes, of course, I would. But you really are one crazy guy."

"Same to you, my friend."

With that, I had somehow been able to acquire my first member, and asking the system whether it was accepted as a first member, I was glad to hear that it was.

Everything was just working out so well that feeling paranoid was unavoidable, and there was also the thing with being followed after leaving Angela's apartment building that I needed to look into.

Within a matter of minutes, I had won Connor over, but for the time being, it was for the best if he continued working.

I was yet to establish a base for the gang, like the mission stated I should, and I hadn't even thought of a name for the gang yet.

Exchanging phone numbers with him, I now had a third new contact and the first member in my gang that had a lot of untapped potential.

Although not the most intellectual, he had very sharp instincts and senses, had an incredibly powerful physique, and also had the ambition that I was looking for.

All that was left was to find two members, and preferably one with somewhere we could use as a base for our gang.

However, one thing I have realised is that I end up achieving what I am seeking when I least expect to, so staying calm and positive would be best, and eventually, all things will come together well.

Or so I hope...
