CH 69

~End of chapter 68

Lu Wanwan was restless even after she fell asleep. Feeling too hot and stuffy, she kicked the covers off her body, her white feet were sticking out of the covers, her smooth and round toes were slightly curled up.

Shen Yi straightened his back and stood at the edge of the bed, looking down at her silently, he gently put her exposed hands and feet back under the covers.

As Lu Wanwan turned around, the thin quilt slipped down, and was now around her waist.

Shen Yi let out a small sigh and kindly covered her up again with the quilt.

Lu Wanwan woke up once in the middle of the night, lifting her head, she saw Shen Yi standing by the window. It looked like he had not slept all night, his backside view appeared a little lonely.

Her head didn’t hurt anymore, but her limbs had little strength left. Looking at Shen Yi’s back, Lu Wanwan suddenly recalled many things.

Chapter 69

(28.2)

During their third year of high school, their classrooms were separated by three floors, and because Lu Wanwan belonged those type of kids who weren’t very well-behaved, the class teacher would always keep her for an extra half hour.

At night, the campus streetlights only emitted a faint glow, the teenager, dressed in a meticulous school uniform, was standing on the steps of the classroom entrance, quiet and well-behaved.

Those words were entering Lu Wanwan’s left ears and going out of her right one, she didn’t pay attention at all to what the teacher on the platform was saying, for her eyes had long been attracted to the teenager outside the window.

During late autumn, the cold outside was bone-chilling.

The school uniform Shen Yi was wearing was short-sleeved and his body was thin. She was a little worried, she frowned as she was thinking inside her mind about whether or not Shen Yi would feel cold, what to do if he waited too long and then got sick because of that ? His health had never been very good.

When the season changed, he would always get a small cold and wouldn’t get better even with medicine, he always suffered for a period of time before he could recover.

Lu Wanwan’s gaze towards the outside was so obvious and blatant that the teacher’s face turned green as he smashed the heavy book next to her feet : “Your eyes are about to fall out! Properly finish your homework, if you don’t finish it tonight, you will stand in front of the classroom tomorrow morning and copy it for the first and second year students to see the joke.”

Lu Wanwan grimaced and reluctantly withdrew her gaze.

At almost ten o’clock, the evening study for boarding students was almost over.

Lu Wanwan was only then allowed to leave class, so she took her school bag and hurriedly slipped away using the back door. She appeared behind Shen Yi with a delighted smile on her face, sneaking behind him, she patted his shoulder: “Didn’t you get impatient from waiting ah?”

Shen Yi turned around and shook his head: “I didn’t.”

As he said that, he handed her a box of milk that was still warm, his words were brief and concise: “It’s still warm, drink it.”

Back then, as Lu Wanwan held that box of warm milk in her hands, she also felt her heart warming up.

She slowly sat up from the bed, the sky was still dark outside the window. Looking at the clock hanging on the wall, it was 3:00 am.

She asked, “Why aren’t you sleeping?”

“You’re awake ah.” Shen Yi then said, “Are you thirsty?”

He guessed it right, Lu Wanwan’s throat indeed was dry and talking didn’t feel comfortable. She was originally in the blurry land of dreams but then she was woken up by her thirst.

Beside the head of the bed, there was a thermos cup which was filled with warm water.

Lu Wanwan had two sip of it before the painful feeling in her throat got better. Looking at Shen Yi, she asked again the question she had just asked, “Why aren’t you sleeping?”

Shen Yi pondered for a moment, his eyebrows knitted slightly together, but he pulled up a forced smile as he slowly said: “I did go to sleep.”

He was woken up from fright because of a nightmare.

He had a long dream.

At the end of this dream, Lu Wanwan actually died.

She died in the freezing snow, wretchedly kneeling on the side of a road, her face was ghastly white, her eyes were red and swollen, she appeared haggard.

And he, he walked past her as he held someone else’s hand, feeling too disgusted to even take a look at her one more time.

The people gathered in front of the hotel were all pointing their fingers and discussing about her, saying a lot of things.

“The Lu family deserves to go bankrupt.”

“Who can Lu Wanwan blame for being like this now? Back then, she was the one who absolutely wanted to divorce Shen Yi, and she even ran away with another man before the divorce was finalized.”

“Now that she ended up like this, this can also be considered retribution.”

The fragile and delicate woman was pitifully kneeling in the snow, her upper body slowly bent down as her body curled up. Her eyes slowly closed and never opened again.

Shen Yi opened his eyes from the fright and, reaching out his hand, touched the person at his side. His heart, which was hanging in mid-air, then gradually calmed down.

But after this, he couldn’t sleep anymore.

After Lu Wanwan drank water, she started to feel sleepy again, she originally didn’t have any energy, and she fell asleep again as soon as she lied back down.

***

The high fever went back and forth for at least a week before she recovered completely. During this week, Shen Yi stayed at home and didn’t go to the office.

When Lu Wanwan was bored, she could only watch TV. That day, she suddenly saw an interview of Shen Shi, Shen Yi’s elder brother, on the news channel.

She was suddenly recalled of the fact that Shen Shi had asked her to persuade Shen Yi to return to the Shen family house to attend their grandfather’s birthday party.

Lu Wanwan knew that Shen Yi had little affection for the Shen family members, especially for his parents, with whom the relationship had been cold for years.

Shen Yi most probably had no intention to go to his grandfather’s birthday party.

They didn’t go back to the Shen family, but they weren’t able to prevent the Shen family’s people to find their way to their door, one after the other.

Lu Wanwan didn’t expect that the first person to come greet her would be Gu Sheng, the female lead in the original novel.
