~3rd Person Perspective~

The morning of new soldiers starts early.

Or rather, they are woken up long before the sun rises.

It’s not that early anymore.

The reason is that the night guard duty is something that no one wants to do so it’s done by newcomers.

Nightguard duty refers to the time between sunset and sunrise when the security of important bases is required.

Naturally, it is not popular because it is boring, disorienting, drowsy, and you have too much free time.

And the place that is most unpopular during the night guard duty is at the observatory tower next to the gate on the outer walls.

This is a tower made of stone and wood adjacent to the outer wall, and it is twice as high as the wall. From there, you have to watch the outside of the wall and ring the bell if anything is at the gate. Other than that, you are just looking out.

Since it is twice as high as the outer wall, windowpanes cannot be used, the guards are exposed to the wind. It’s a horrible job that also adds “freezing” to the reason why it’s not popular.

That’s why the salary is high… there is no reason for anyone to take it.

Thus the takers are third-class soldiers. The bottom of the barrel.

No matter how hard the job is they take it since their salary is the lowest.

“… Hey Uggs. What are we doing?” (Beegee)

A man leaning against a wooden wall looked up at the roof and asked him to mutter.

“We’re the lookout at the top of the tower? You’re not focusing… I’m always telling you not to lean against the wall, Beegee. The wood is weak, if you put your weight on it might end badly for you, it might break anytime. You could die, you know?” (Uggs)

Despite saying that, the man called Uggs kept watching outside the wall seriously and just glanced at the voice.

“It’s not that kind of thing… Hmm… You’ve always been a serious person. Your promotion seems to be quite quick.” (Beegee)

“Even if you don’t like this kind of work, you have to take it seriously. If you get promoted, you can get rid of this kind of work right away.” (Uggs)

After being silent for a moment, Beegee looked down, saying, “You’re right…”

Silence came back again.

Lookouts are basically done by a pair of people, but even if they talk with each other over and over again for hours, the topics will eventually run out. Still, it’s better to talk. When guarding in front of the lord’s mansion, they can’t talk unless they make sure that there are absolutely no people around. The best thing about this tower is that no one can restrict them from being noisy.

The small light from the lamp magic tool flickered and illuminated the two of them.

This small light can only affect a small area.

Beegee suddenly thought that he might be able to read a book if he got closer.

And then he sighed, remembering that he couldn’t read.

“I’m going to have to get Uggs to teach me how to read one of these days”, he thought. After all, reading and writing are essential to receive higher education. If he’s going to keep taking jobs, he’s going to have to learn at some point. The sooner he learns, the better, and the older you become, the more embarrassing it gets.

“Hey, Uggs. Can you teach me how to read and write?” (Beegee)

Beegee cut the silence.

He was quick to change his mind and quick to act. When he decides to do something, he does it immediately. That was one of the good things about him.

“…” (Uggs)

At that time, the sun just rises illuminating the two of them.

The long-awaited morning has finally arrived.

“Hey, Uggs…. Uggs?” (Beegee)

Beegee turned towards Uggs, wondering why he was not giving a reply.

Uggs is staring out the gate, beyond the horizon.

His eyes are wide open, and his jaw is slack and half-open—

“A horde of monsters! Send a message! This is urgent! Beegee! Run!” (Uggs)

At that moment, Uggs suddenly jumped and shouted.

Then he leaped at the bell hanging in the tower and began hitting it with the hammer with all his might.

“Beegee! What are you doing! Get going!” (Uggs)

Uggs shouts again and he keeps hitting the bell with the hammer.

Beegee gazed outside the gate, beyond the horizon, terror painting his face.

“Something” was illuminated by the rising sun and it was moving along the horizon.

There was a cloud of dust, and he could see a lot of things moving towards them.

It was too far away for him to tell what it was. But his instincts told him.

In the form of fear.

“… Haa.” (Beegee)

Being spurred by his instinct, Beegee moved back leaping, jumping at the ladder, and sliding halfway down.

Then, after rolling on the ground, he starts sprinting at full speed.

Fear and tension pulled at his body, he couldn’t run well, his legs got tangled, and he fell on his face. Still, he got up and kept running.

Believing that something will change if he reports it as soon as possible, even by just a second earlier.

Soon the longest day of their lives will begin.
