Chapter 117 - A Barrier That Shouldn't Be Broken

It didn't take a long time for them to arrive at their destination. The streets were blocked by monster corpses and crashed cars, but it still didn't take too long as the city mall was close to them.

Reyan stopped the car in a safe corner. He had promised the owner of the car that he would return the car to him safely do he made sure that the car wouldn't get damaged if he parked it in that spot.

"Is that the place?"

Reyan asked that while pointing at a place with a slightly surprised face.

"Yes."

Reyan opened the door and stepped out after hearing that.

Looking at the scene in front of them, reyan mumbled something to himself.

"Isn't it too much for only the two of us?"

Reyan could see a large number of big and small monsters gathered in one place. The place where the monsters were surrounding was a building, one of the city's biggest malls.

In addition to the monsters around the building, other monsters scattered all over the place were also walking and gathering at that place one by one.

While Reyan was wondering why all those monsters were gathering here, he heard team leader Dains' voice.

"They said there are other agents here as well. They've been fighting the monsters until now."

"I see..."

Reyan took out his sword and grabbed its hilt toughly.

"Still..."

They had fought monsters until now and were exhausted. It wasn't really wise for just the two of them to go fight all those monsters all alone, he thought.

Team leader Dains checked his guns and commented nonchalantly.

"We will retreat immediately if it gets dangerous."

"Yes."

Reyan didn't say anything else and silently followed team leader Dains.

A bunch of small spiders, a few scorpions, and a few other kinds of bugs, were all surrounding the mall.

KIEEE

KWAWW

BOMMM

They could hear the sounds of monsters, screeches, and other weird noises once they got closer to them.

'They must be fighting.'

It sounded like those agents were in the middle of a fight judging from the noises.

Even though the monsters were high in number, each one of them wasn't that high-leveled. Most of them were weak and easy to kill. If it was a one-on-one battle, they could easily kill them.

What made the situation hard for them was the monsters' number. They had to be careful not to attract their attention, or else, they would be surrounded by all of those monsters in no time.

And that too wasn't hard either. There was one person who could kill them all without even getting close to them.

Hiding in a safe spot and standing behind Reyan, team leader Dains aimed at the rearmost monsters.

Swosh

Swosh

The team leader's bullets didn't even make a noise when they were shot. There was a slight shaking in the air where they passed before a monster fell down to the ground without noticing how it died.

As for the ones who left their group to attack the one who killed their kin, Reyan killed them easily with his sword.

Contrary to Reyan's expectations, taking care of the monsters wasn't that hard. It took a little bit of their time, but it was safe and efficient.

Before long, the ground was full of monster corpses.

Every time they killed a bunch of monsters, they walked closer to the mall.

They felt the temperature drop the more they got closer to the mall. There was also a barrier-like thing surrounding the building.

And what was even stranger was that there were no people in the streets. Not a single injured or trapped person was seen in the whole place.

"Did those agents gather them all in a safe place?"

"It seems to be that way."

"I don't think they can keep going for long if they've fought the monster since the start of the breakout."

Reyan looked towards the building once again. A lot of people must be gathered there. probably everyone living and passing this place was in that building now. That might be why these monsters were all surrounding that mall.

"Let's keep going."

"Yes, sir."

With that order, the two of them started to kill the next group of monsters.

. . . . . . .

"Please keep calm and gather in one place. Don't leave the building, it's dangerous outside. It is safe here. Other hunters and agents will also arrive soon so please cooperate."

The panicked people looked at the woman who was talking loudly with a confident face. Hearing her words, the people all calmed down and gathered in a group.

It wasn't like they had any other choice, they were all alive thanks to that woman and the other dude outside. They couldn't leave this place as the outside was full of monsters.

"Please! Please god, keep my daughter safe. Please protect her."

"Why can't I call my wife? Why isn't she answering?"

"I had a job interview today! Why!?"

They couldn't do anything but pray and try to get in contact with their families.

"Mama!"

The woman that was standing at the entrance and helping the people looked down after hearing a kid's voice. The little boy was pulling her sleeve with both hands.

"Yes?"

Even though the situation was dire and stressful, she still answered him in a soft and warm voice.

"Un..."

The boy raised his head and stared at his mother. His always clear dark gray eyes were now teary.

"Why isn't papa coming inside?"

The woman patted the kid's head.

"Because he is fighting the monsters."

The kid pulled her sleeves even more.

"Why is he fighting the monsters?"

"Because he wants to protect you, Ariyan."

"Protect me..."

Ariyan mumbled that and released his mother's sleeves. He had heard that before.

"Unn..."

The little kid hugged his mother's legs and buried his head in her stomach.

His father was fighting outside to protect him.

"Huff!"

Drip Drip Drip

The droplets of water, mixed with blood, dropped to the ground.

"Another one is down."

Kain looked at the monster's corpse and touched his cheek. The scar on his cheek was bleeding, dirtying his face.

KIEEE

"Argh! Shut up!"

He raised his hand and moved it towards the monster that was rushing towards him. Droplets of water joined together and created a blade of water.

Four blades of water were shot towards the monster that was rushing at him.

KIEEE KIII

GWAA

He didn't stop to witness the monster's death and hurriedly jumped back. The sharp tail of a scorpion dug the ground right under his feet.

"Tch!"

Kain moved his left hand this time. The water whip on his left hand moved up and bent around the scorpion's tail.

He then pulled the whip.

GWWEEEEEKK

The monster screeched. Its tail was separated from its body. Kain moved his left hand again, hitting the other monster with the tail still stuck to the water whip.

KWAAA

BOMM

The small monster was sent back and hit another monster. Both of them fell to the ground.

Splash

Splash

They fell to the wet ground.

KWEE??

The two monsters tried to rush at him again, but they couldn't move their bodies. The water that was making their bodies wet suddenly started to get cold and turn to ice.

KIEEE!

GWWAA!

The monsters' bodies were trapped in a layer of ice in a few seconds.

"Haaa. Huff. Haaa."

Kain staggered a little bit and panted heavily.

He was cold. The wound on his right hand was throbbing and the blood from the cut on his forehead was blocking his view. He was exhausted and out of energy.

"I just wanted to shop!"

Why did they have to be trapped in a situation like this?

Kain and Alessia were both free today after a long time and decided to go shopping to buy some snacks and some warm clothes for their son.

"Ah, damn it!"

Kain cursed again and created another bunch of water blades. The water blades cut the big spider's legs that was coming towards it, making it unable to move.

CRACK

CRACK

"Ah?"

Kain turned towards the barrier that he and Alessia had made by combining their powers.

The ice barrier, although thin, had been protecting the building until now.

But now there were some cracks in it.

A big pseudoscorpion was slamming the barrier with its body, making it break little by little.

"Damn it!"

KWEE

"Argh."

Just when he was about the send its whip towards the pseudoscorpion to stop it, he was hit by something from behind.

BAMM

Kain lost his balance due to the ground being wet and icy, falling to the ground.

Crack Crack Crack

The ice barrier was breaking down.

Kain didn't raise his body to move away from the monster that was targetting him. He neither had the time nor the energy to do so.

He just moved his whip. He moved the whip by all of his might to grab the monster.

The monster couldn't break the barrier. It shouldn't break it.

He couldn't let the monsters pass the barrier.

His family was on the other side of it.

His son was there.

His wife was there.

He couldn't let them get hurt at any cost.
