Chapter 250

250 Useless

Kairen, and the two other agents, were once again hiding behind a wall in a corner of the building.

“Are you sure about it?”

The woman asked.

“Yes. I’m sure someone saw us while we were moving here.”

“Did you see who it was?”

“I don’t know. I just know that it was a small figure peeking through that window in there.”

The male agent pointed at one spot in the building. It was a building that was built on a corner, where two walls connected to each other, and the window faced a wall. It was more a blind spot where even security cameras weren’t installed, that’s why they had chosen to use this route to go inside. But now someone had seen them?

“Darn it!”

She cursed under her lips.

.....

“I’m sure the alarms will go off soon.”

“What should we do? Retreat?”

“We can’t. We’ve come this far we can’t go back empty-handed after we’ve ruined the plans.”

“Then what?”

“Kairen, can you cast some spells to conceal us?”

The two agents turned to look at Kairen again.

“Um... I guess.”

Kairen was a battle mage, not a supporter, but he had a small knowledge about stealth and invisibility spells.

“I can conceal your presence, but I can’t keep you invisible for too long.”

“For now, just do something about our presence.”

“Okay.”

Kairen nodded his head and started to cast his spell.

‘Hmm?’

While doing so, he had to pause for a moment and examine his spell and mana thoroughly.

‘Did it just fluctuate? Was I mistaken?’

Kairen tilted his head. Just now, he felt his mana act strange for a moment. It was for only a second, but he was sure he felt it fluctuate.

‘Whatever.’

Nothing happened so either he was mistaken or the fluctuation was not something important.

Shhhhh

With a quiet noise, three small and faint rays of light appeared in the air. The three rays of light moved in different locations, heading towards the three people hiding in a corner of the building. Then, the three lights whirled around the wrists of the three people and seeped into their skin.

“Your presence will not be sensed now. Your movements will also not have any sounds.”

“Cool.”

“Thanks.”

The two senior agents whom Kairen didn’t even know the name of nodded their heads and thanked Kairen.

“Now, come this way. Make sure not to be seen.”

As the woman said, she stood up and gestured to the other two to follow her. The three people walked in a long hallway. The hallway, strangely, was empty. Not a single person even passed in the hallway.

“Why aren’t they doing anything...”

The woman mumbled. They had been exposed, so why was there anybody after them? The place was also empty with not even a single guard.

“The rooms are also empty...”

“It is a trap! I’m 100 percent sure this is a trap!”

The woman sighed and shook her head.

“Even if it’s a trap, there is nothing we can do. In the first place, the people here are not strong enough to defeat us three. The only way that we might lose is that they call backup, which I doubt would arrive this soon even if they called for them.”

She looked around and searched the rooms in the hall one by one.

“We’ll split up. Two of us will search the rooms while one remains outside to guard.”

“Yes.”

“Yes.”

Pat

The woman then patted Kairen’s shoulder.

“You stay out. You can create shields and activate the teleportation device as soon as you spot enemies. Call us if there are any problems.”

“Yes.”

As they agreed, the man and woman each jumped into a room and Kairen stood out in the hallway, guarding.

‘Is it really okay for one of Philomns’ bases to be this empty?’

They had seen guards in other parts of the building on their way here, but there were none in the most important part?

Geeeez

“Uh?”

Kairen snapped his head backward.

‘Is someone looking at me?’

He clearly felt a gaze on himself.

Tap

Kairen took one step towards the spot where he felt someone watching him.

But there was no one there.

‘Um...’

Standing there, Kairen looked at the other end of the hall.

Peek

But he didn’t forget to turn back to peek at the side where he had felt a gaze from. Maybe he could catch the person off guard if he peeked back consistently, right?

A few minutes passed that way. No matter how much Kairen waited, no one ever showed up. His senior agents even switched rooms once, but everything was still calm.

Tap Tap

Until he heard a footstep after a few minutes.

Tap Tap

The footsteps were moving his way from the same side where he had been peeking for the last 10 minutes.

Tap Tap Tap

‘What should I do?’

Someone was clearly approaching them.

‘I should call them to come out!’

Kairen moved towards the door of the room where the female agent was currently at.

“Hey~”

But then, he stopped moving. It was because of the person who just walked out of the corridor, but instead of moving his side, walked towards the other corridor while talking.

“I’ve been searching for you.”

“Ah? Sir?”

He then heard the voice of someone else whom he couldn’t see as he was behind the wall.

‘T-the soil dude?’

Frozen in his spot, Kairen stared at the person who approached someone else and started a conversation.

.....

“I didn’t know you were here! I’ve been searching everywhere for you!”

“Um... W-who are you?”

Kairen could say that the other person was completely confused judging by his voice.

“Oh? Don’t you know me?”

“I’m sorry I don’t...”

‘Why is he here?’

Kairen stared at the man’s back with wide eyes.

‘W-why... Was he the one staring at me?’

Kairen took one step towards the soil dude.

‘Hey! I want to talk to you...’

But there was someone else that the soil dude was talking to at the moment. How could he possibly have a chat with him?

Tap

It was then that Kairen heard another set of footsteps. From the place where the soil dude had walked out, came a teenage girl about half the hights of the man in front of her.

“.....”

“....”

And the first thing that the small girl did was glare at Kairen, sending daggers at him with her gaze.

‘What?’

Why was she looking at him like that?

“.....”

Kairen tilted his head, the girl looked even angrier.

‘Uh, can it be... The small figure that saw us... Was it her?’

Kairen tilted his head, even more, the girl now looked like she would jump at him and beat the shit out of him at any moment.

‘Wait... So these people were the ones who knew about us? Then, were they also the reason why this hallway is so empty?’

Kairen looked between Claire and the soil dude.

‘I want to chat with him...’

Couldn’t he just knock the Philomns member unconscious and then have a chat with this man?

“I asked everyone around to find you! I had to discuss with you the issues related to the last set of documents that the manager handed to me!”

“Y-Yes? B-but I’m just a cleaner...”

“Oh!”

The soil dude gasped.

“Then, you must know where to find the archive! I need to go there!”

“The archive? Yes, I know. It’s that way!”

The soil dude was clearly doing his best to keep the man busy.

“....”

And Claire was still staring at Kairen with her eyes resembling a serial killer who was out for a hunt. ‘Go get lost already!’ was written all over her face.

Creak

It was at that moment that one of the doors opened and the male agent left the room. The agent froze at his spot upon seeing the two people and hearing the voice of the third one on the other side of the wall. He then turned to look at Kairen who was standing right in front of the enemy doing nothing like a fool.

Clang

The male agent grabbed the hilt of his sword.

‘Wait!’

Kairen whispered.

‘They won’t do anything to us! We’ve gotta leave silently!’

‘What?’

Kairen grabbed the man’s arm and pulled him towards the room where the female agent was, meanwhile, he took out the teleportation device. Kairen glanced one last time at the soil dude before pushing the man inside the room.

‘We’ll meet again soon I suppose.’

And closed the door behind him. Activating the teleportation device as soon as he stepped into the room, Kairen teleported the three people to a faraway location from the base.

‘But man, I did nothing in the whole mission...’

He felt kinda... No, completely useless. He didn’t do anything. He just cast a few spells and then ran away...

‘Still, it was because of me that we managed to go in and out without any problems, right? The soil dude... Brother wouldn’t help the other two agents if I wasn’t with them, right?’

Yeah. He wasn’t completely useless after all. Yeah.

And then he, the little bit of a useless person in the mission, had to go through answering countless questions about the soil dude and the thing that happened in the hallway.
