Chapter 98 Traces

To others, George might look like he was trying to curry favor with the recently trending chancellor that held tremendous power.

However, Lei Zhen knew George wasn't trying to curry favor. In fact, if he was then he wouldn't be trying to greet him in front of Princess Kate.

That was equivalent to telling Kate that he wanted to gain a high position by befriending him.

"Chancellor, would it be alright if you come to the Ministry of Defense after discussing with Princess Kate?" George asked, seemingly in a hurry.

Lei Zhen nodded his head.

"Very well, I'll visit the Ministry of Defense soon." He replied, allowing George to leave the office.

Once George left the office, Kate's cold expression turned into a smile.

"I'm surprised you agreed to meet with George," She said in a somewhat astonishing tone, clearly teasing him previously for denying his rank again and again.

Lei Zhen shrugged his shoulders in response. "What am I supposed to respond to then? That I'm not interested and you can do whatever you want?"

"So I'm guessing you will finally accept this rank of yours?"

"Not a chance. I'm just going to assist you occasionally so you can become the next queen. After all, you're more qualified than the two princes."

Speaking of the princes, Kate's smile turned sour, and seemed to be holding back some tears.

With his keen eyes, Lei Zhen noticed her change of expression right away.

"What happened?" He asked, though inwardly, he had a guess at what happened to the two princes.

Treason or rebellion, both are irrefutable crimes that only had the death penalty as punishment regardless of their identities.

And he was right when Kate informed him that the two princes died last night in their prison cell.

pαndα,noνɐ1,сoМ The autopsy confirmed it was by suicide, but Kate was skeptical of this result.

For Prince Carter who cared about honor above everything, suicide was the last option he would choose. As for Prince Leon, he was the most cowardly prince that would only take action in the shadows.

Thus, the chances of the two of them committing suicide for their crimes are next to impossible.

"I don't know if I want to think about it this way, but you should know who's the most likely culprit behind this, right?" Kate held a bittersweet smile as she asked him.

Lei Zhen nodded his head, keeping quiet instead of replying to her.

After all, it was pretty obvious who was the one responsible for their supposed suicide.

Who else but the king could possibly create a scene of two princes' suicide and not have any news spread around?

"I've made a promise to spare their lives, yet I didn't manage to keep it."

"It's not your fault, Kate. When they started to barricade Yors Castle and begin this war, they should have expected this outcome when they failed." Lei Zhen shook his head.

"Though I'm still suspicious of one thing. Why would they make such a foolish choice?" He added, feeling that there was something more to it.

With the intelligence of the two princes, Lei Zhen doubted they would have the guts to actually start a war without someone instigating from the shadow.

Alas, there was not enough information for him to investigate and this incident would probably be buried very soon.

After all, this was a stain on the royal family. If anyone dared to bring this topic up again, then it was no different than them courting death.

"Anyway, there will be a mourning process for the two princes," Kate said, feeling exhausted. To have to play the hypocritical role of mourning when she knew who did the crime was inexcusable for her.

As much as she wished to go back to being the impulsive princess, that was no longer possible since she was the last offspring of Francis Norton.

Unless the king decided to have another offspring, she would have to be responsible and think of her every action before making it now.

"Now you know why I always refused a position. Too much politics and I'm not interested in scheming." Lei Zhen shrugged his shoulders and said.

He only schemed previously because he needed to enter Yors Castle, but was blockaded by the two princes. Truth be told, he was playing a game and wanted to have some adventures like Tang Qiaolian.

When he was listening to her story, his heart was beating excitedly as he wished to have the same adventure as well.

"Will you go to the mourning ceremony with me?" Kate nervously asked, hoping that he would join her.

"Besides the two princes that will be mourned, there will be a national mourning ceremony for the soldiers that died in the war." She added.

Lei Zhen pondered for a while before agreeing to join her.

The soldiers that lost their lives were deployed by him as well. The least he could do was go to the ceremony and pay his respect for their heroic action.

"When will the mourning ceremony begin?" He asked.

"In about 2 hours from now. The ceremony is currently being set up by the guards."

"I see, then what else happened during my time in the room?"

"Right!" Kate suddenly slammed her palm and stood up.

"I almost forgot about this because of the sudden passing of my elder brothers, but we discovered tracks of the black mage that ambushed me previously."

"You found the black mage track?" Lei Zhen was astonished. He thought the black mage was a cautious person, so how could his track be easily found.

Something just didn't add up to this coincidence.

"The black mage was last spotted in a swamp near Lux Forest. Here's the report of the patrol guard." Kate said and handed over a paper to him.

'Strange… it's really the traces of the black mage. But why would he appear in the swamp as soon as the war is over?' Lei Zhen wondered silently, feeling that there should be some conspiracy being cooked up at the moment.
