Chapter 35.2 – Bestowed a Cup of Tea (2)

Lu Qipei had been working in Hanlin Academy for more than two months. It wasn’t a long time, but she blended in better than many people – the literati were arrogant and aloof, but they were also easily convinced by talent. In the past two months, she did not only make the number three scholar Liu Chen look pale in comparison. Even the number one and two scholars who had returned from visiting their families also lost their brilliance and could only get the cold shoulder treatment in Hanlin Academy.

It could be said that her development was unparalleled among all the officials who took office in Hanlin Academy this year.

But even so, the tacit rule of seniority in Hanlin Academy had not been broken. Compilers had other duties aside from recording national history, such as recording the Emperor’s words and actions. But the seniors would not give up the duties that would allow them to show their face in front of the Emperor, like doing a lecture on history and the classics. The newcomers would not get a turn.

Lu Qipei had waited for two months, but she didn’t even get a chance to enter the palace to see the Emperor. She wasn’t in a hurry initially, but after seeing Qi Yang mentioning it so frequently, she also gradually became interested in the wedding.

After Lu Qicheng’s death, she began to see the tip of the iceberg of the Lu family’s power. Based on this tip of the iceberg, the behemoth behind it wasn’t something she could deal with within a short period.

She couldn’t get married if she hadn’t solved the future problems the Lu family posed? What a joke, then how long would she have to wait!?

Lu Qipei felt that her situation was much better than her previous life. Although she had some concerns, she really looked forward towards her marriage with Qi Yang. It was under such circumstances that she finally came across a rare opportunity…

When it came to preaching the scriptures for the Emperor, two Hanlin Academy lecturers would take turns to be on duty in the palace. However, there was a mishap this time.

Bachelor Wu, whose turn was not right now, was on leave at home. Meanwhile, Bachelor Shen who was having his turn right now, suddenly fell ill before entering the palace and couldn’t go.

The academy’s head hurriedly sent someone to the Wu Mansion to invite Bachelor Wu, but he received news that Bachelor Wu met an immortal in his dream yesterday, and he went out of the city to seek immortality!

The literati often acted outside common sense. They could leave behind everything because of a dream and run out to fool around because of nonsense.

When the academy’s head received the news, he was so angry his beard stood up. However, the Emperor was still waiting in the palace. What could he do?

This sudden call couldn’t have been more sudden. Even those who wanted to show their face in front of the Emperor did not dare to easily do so at the moment, because they were afraid of making a mistake in front of the Emperor due to inadequate preparation.

Eighty percent of the people in Hanlin Academy turned into quails at this moment, while the remaining twenty percent                were prepared to make a move. Almost all of them were newcomers who just entered this year – new bloods who weren’t afraid of anything. But the academy head didn’t dare to take risk, afraid of being implicated himself if they caused trouble.

It was at this time that Lu Qipei stood out. Her talent and knowledge were clear to everyone, and she was also good-looking and eye-catching. Most importantly, the Emperor personally decreed her entry to Hanlin Academy, so she was somewhat favor by the Emperor.

The academy head finally smoothed his beard and made his decision. He refused Liu Chen and the others who also offered to go and decided to send Lu Qipei.

And just like that, Lu Qipei wore her blue Hanlin Academy sixth-grade official robe and carried with her the scriptures and history books she was going to lecture about. She straightened her back and entered the palace for the first time in her life.

She went there early in the morning, and the Emperor didn’t summon her until late afternoon. When he saw her, he first praised her, “He really does look good.”

Lu Qipei did not think much about what the Emperor was thinking behind this compliment. After respectfully thanking him, she saw that the Emperor had nothing else to say and started the lecture without any delay.

Her voice was clear and her understanding was thorough. When she spoke, she did not lose to the scholars with ample experience, and was more pleasing to the eye because of her youth and handsomeness. Even the Emperor listened to her more carefully than before.

Usually, the lecture was limited to one hour. Today, the Emperor did not stop her or ask any questions, so Lu Qipei spoke for a full one hour. Later on, even her clear voice started becoming hoarse.

When the time came, Lu Qipei finally stopped. As soon as the Emperor raised his hand, Zhang Jian understood the signal and offered her a cup of tea.

Lu Qipei thanked him and drank half the cup of tea; but when she looked up again, she found that the Emperor had already gotten up and left. From the beginning to the end, not only did he not say more than half a sentence to her, they didn’t even have the usual discussion about scriptures and history!

Holding the remaining half cup of tea in her hand, Lu Qipei was momentarily flustered, and she even subconsciously moved two steps chasing in the Emperor’s direction.

Fortunately, she wasn’t the only person from Hanlin Academy on duty today; she was just replacing Bachelor Shen to give the lecture today. Seeing that she wanted to chase after the Emperor, the colleague next to her hurriedly pulled her back, “Compiler Lu, His Majesty has left. What are you doing!?”

The voice brought back Lu Qipei’s consciousness and stopped her. However, seeing the Emperor’s back disappearing outside the hall’s door, she couldn’t help but frown and show a worried look. She turned to ask her colleagues, “Was my lecture just now no-good?”

The colleague knew what she was worried about, and also felt that the Emperor’s attitude today was different. But after thinking about it, he said, “I think it was pretty good.” After that, he added, “At least, it sounded pretty good to me. Your Majesty didn’t stop you either, right? He even bestowed you a cup of tea.”

After hearing this, Lu Qipei looked down at the cup of tea in her hand, then looked at the direction of the hall’s door. She was really confused.

So, did her future father-in-law like her or not?
