Mu Yazhe was informed by the nurse that Yun Shishi was awake. He hurried over. However, just as he came up to the door of the ward, he sensed that the atmosphere in the ward was extremely tense. Right away, he thought that something was amiss.

Yun Shishi lay on the hospital bed, her eyes bloodshot, while Little Yichen sat silently by her side. The boy looked distinctly forlorn.

“What’s the matter?”

Little Yichen lowered his head even further. He bowed his head so that his fringe would hide his slightly reddened eyes from Mu Yazhe. But even then, Mu Yazhe could imagine his expression. Even though he didn’t know what was going on, this was the first time he’d seen Little Yichen looking so forlorn.

Mu Yazhe walked slowly to his son’s side and patted him lightly on the shoulder. The communication between a father and a son is often that simple and unspoken. Without the need to say anything, he had given the boy great strength!

Little Yichen forced his tears back fiercely. He looked up and met his father’s eyes.

“Daddy…”

“You must be tired!” Noticing how exhausted the boy looked, Mu Yazhe said, “You’ve been watching over Mommy all night. It’s been hard on you.”

“No, it’s not hard work…”

“Now that Mommy is awake, and I’m here, go and get some rest!”

“But…”

“Don’t tire yourself out. You’re still growing. Don’t stay up too long.”

At this, the boy rose to his feet, but he swayed and inevitably looked a little dazed.

When Yun Shishi saw this, she felt both chagrined and heartbroken. She was on the verge of saying something, but finally kept silent.

Little Yichen left the ward quietly, shutting the door softly behind him.

Mu Yazhe sat down in his place and gently took his wife’s hand. “Finally awake?” he asked gently.

“Uh huh…” She looked down in frustration, like a child who had made a mistake.

The man pursed his lips. He had a pretty good idea of what had just happened. The man was so astute that he could tell their state of mind just by studying the silent expression between them.

Instead of getting straight to the point, he changed the subject. “Remember the time we went to a pet store and you saw a room with a closed door? You were curious and asked why the door was not left open. Do you remember the owner’s answer?”

The woman was a little taken aback. She did not know why Mu Yazhe had brought this up, but seeing his serious expression, she did not question him. She searched her memory. “As I recall, the shopkeeper said something about… a mother dog having just given birth and not being able to meet strangers.”

“Then, do you know why mother dogs are not able to meet strangers after giving birth to their litter?”

Yun Shishi looked confused and shook her head.

“Because, once a female dog comes into contact with the scent of a living human being, she’ll be frightened. Once she’s alarmed, she’ll eat her pups.”

“Psssss…” The woman sucked her breath in sharply. “How could she be so cruel?”

The man smiled as he continued unhurriedly, “Because a mother dog is weak after giving birth. Coupled with the fact that all the mother dogs in the pet store are in cages, once she senses what she thinks is danger, she’ll realize that there’s nowhere for her and the pups to run. She’ll feed on them out of maternal and protective instinct.”

“How is that possible? Don’t you think that’s too far-fetched a statement! Even a vicious tiger doesn’t eat its cubs.”

“Because, caring messes things up. Motherhood is great, yet sometimes, it’s blind.”
