284 Chapter 283: No risk no reward

Unlike what many would think, the laws of the empire were so strict one would even think the emperor is insecure but they would fail to realize they are dealing with deities and not humans.

In the gyro Kingdom or other kingdoms in the past nobility was allowed to have its personal forces, it’s just that there is always a cap on how many they can train but in this world, no noble was allowed to own personal soldiers.

In fact, the soldiers of the holy church are more or less a special unit in the military. They are just blessed and designed to combat the forces of evil. The most valuable of the military forces in the empire but it is said special tests are to be taken to decide if one has what it takes to become a member of the special holy forces.

As soon as Cecile arrived at the training camp, he was greeted by a massive crowd, leaving him stunned by how many people were eager to join the military.

“Of course, it is to be expected. If you have gone to the residential area you will be stunned by the standard of life over there” Damon said in a calm tone as if he was stating the obvious.

No sympathy or pain could be felt in his voice.

This was their escape from poverty, this way they can bring food to their tables.

“Sad” Cecile commented and looked away as his carriage drove past the crowd.

As a noble, he had privileges and wouldn’t be allowed to mingle with commoners.

.....

Soon it reached a castle which was different from where the commoners were led for testing.

Cecile strode forward under the guidance of a soldier and was led into the castle. Within the castle, he was led to what could be considered a training ground. Right there were barely up to ten possible there from the noble families.

“Take the knight of light test…” Damon’s voice suddenly rang in his ears stunning him.

“What?” Cecile froze and looked up with a deep frown.

The Knights of light were unique people handpicked by the one itself. How can they pick him a nobody with no blessing and even a demon Lord residing within him?

“You think too highly of we gods. The world once had mana which granted mortals mana circuits, allowing power to be channeled through them. With the absence of mana for a prolonged time, most humans have lost the magic circuit components and only a handful still have it. That is how they pick their knights and this is the best way for us to rise to the top faster than ever” Damon said.

“But they are the enemy?” Cecile felt disturbed by the fact he was expected to infiltrate the holy church with a devil within him.

“Hmph! Mortals are not worthy of my time… I am a being who became a true God in barely three decades after acquiring the death magic. When have I become so weak that I have to be wary of mortals?” Damon asked with a raised eyebrow.

“You were the one who said that mortals need gods and not the other way around” Cecile responded with his thoughts.

“There are laws binding Deities which I cannot expose easily. All you know is that a deity needs a mortal to survive but mortals don’t need deities to survive. The only perk about gods are the powers that come with the title, nothing more” Damon seemed to be in a chatty mood since the other students were still testing.

The test consisted of physical tests to see one’s physical capabilities and then weapon mastery skills. This determines if one joins and even if he joins, it determines the unit he can join.

Only those who request to be knights of lights may attempt to take the test attached to it. But since the failure rate is close to a hundred percent not many people dare take the test, and some say it’s possible to die from the tests and Damon understood why.

Injection of one’s mana into another person is considered poisonous. That’s why when going against a stronger foe, it’s natural to have injuries infested with their aura, making it twice as worse.

Injecting aura into mere mortals can be considered suicidal. That’s why only those who pass survive and others don’t dare request to join.

“What are the chances I will fail the test?” Cecile asked with a deep frown.

“Zero…. While regaining my strength I have been upgrading your physical prowess to match that of Adras and other God vessels. You lacked a magic circuit once but you have now thanks to me. Have a little faith in your God” Damon said with a slight chuckle and Cecile frowned.

Technically Damon wasn’t his god since he has never been religious.

“You look into the abyss and the abyss looks back. Whoever tries to look too deep will probably get hurt” Cecile said as he remembered how Damon awakened.

If the enemy knew the deity they were desperately fighting against and mocking was amongst them, they would be terrified shitless.

“Cecile Allen?” A cold middle-aged man said those voices with cold eyes as he looked into the small crowd only to see a youth walking forward.

For someone his age he had a good build and his steps were firm and steady. The middle age man was mentally impressed by Cecile’s form, especially for someone his age. But as soon as Cecile approached the man, he looked the man directly in the eyes and spoke words that haven’t been heard in close to a decade

“I wish to become a knight of light. I’m willing to take the test!” Cecile’s voice was low but it didn’t matter even if he whispered those words, it seemed like the entire world would hear it even if he did.

“You…. Do you know what you ask for and the risks involved?” The middle-aged man asked with furrowed eyebrows.

“No risk, no reward…. Of course, I understand” A deeper voice rang from Cecile’s mouth stunning the man.

If he could see things in the spirit world he would see a huge mighty figure seated behind the kid in a cross-legged position and gazing at him intently.
