Chapter 53 The Boy

This child didn't look like he was trembling with fear or apprehension in front of everyone. His trembling legs wobbled, his body moved and his jaw stuttered, but the boy's smile was as beautiful as frost on a window pane.

"This..." Lucas was speechless when he saw him looking like this.

It was like a rollercoaster of emotions to him. He didn't know what to say or how to act... This boy had a beautiful voice, and he looked like he was about seven years old.

Lucas was used to being around kids, but he never met anyone like him. Kids in Kali's hospital used to be lovely and playful. They probably didn't even know what it meant to be in a cold, lonely winter or be starving from hunger.

Yet this boy managed to smile experiencing these hardships.

His thin arms and waist were the proof of him starving for days, maybe even months but the boy was still smiling.

Not knowing if he was a big part of the story or irrelevant, Lucas turned back and got up. He made everyone drop their jaws at what he had done next.

Lucas wrapped his arms around this little boy and pulled him to his chest, "it will be okay..." He whispered to him when tightening his body.

It was a warm hug filling his body with heat, the boy was enjoying it. He didn't refuse Lucas's body touch as he leaned towards him.

"I know you're cold, but we have to go, please get on my back," Lucas spoke softly to him.

He didn't want to scare him, nor make him feel cautious of everyone, Lucas just wanted to help him. The boy's hands were small, he wanted to feed him at least on their journey to the castle.

"Lucas, will you be okay to carry him?" Kali interrupted.

"Yes, I'll be fine, nothing to worry about." He glanced at her and turned back to the boy.

Lucas bent down his knee again and turned his back to prove he was welcome to jump on it. Lucas didn't want to trouble him for asking his name, as everything could still be shocking to this child.

"Come on."

Haya looked with his eyebrows raised when the boy gently wrapped his hands around Lucas's neck. He didn't know how he did that, but Haya was impressed.

He was seeing a whole different side of Lucas right now, he looked gentle and kind. He wasn't acting like an ungrateful brat anymore and was actually doing something to prove himself worthy to stay in this team.

Lucas didn't know about the boy's sad past and what kind of future was awaiting him... Haya was going to tell him everything about this child but seeing him react in such a warm manner made him change his mind, 'I can't do this...' Haya let out a long sigh then Xina spoke to him.

"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" She moved her shoulders a little to the front.

Xina knew the backstory also, but one thing was clear to her that she didn't know Lucas at all. Not only she was surprised but judging by the way Kali was standing and not saying a single word with her mouth slightly opened, she didn't know much about him as well.

Haya and Xina kinda shipped them two, hoping that a horrible event wouldn't have to happen and the one destined to die wouldn't be Kali, but Xina in this story.

As extra characters to the main protagonist they also had to take their parts in the plot. Who was going to die and who actually had to be there to guide them for a better future? Everyone had a place and a job here.

Their minds were free from the system, but their choices weren't.

If they wanted to become free, they had to obey it and follow its orders.

Nobody wanted to be stuck here forever as extra characters in the story and they'd been waiting for their moment for so long that they no longer could hide their happiness within themselves when Lucas appeared as this story's leader.

Xina was not happy to have such a jerk in her team, and her job was to make sacrifices for his character development, but when she observed him she began to wonder if this was going to be worth it.

She didn't want to die for someone like him, but now actually seeing more of his true colours was making her change her mind about him, 'maybe he wasn't that bad after all...' She lowered her eyebrows slowly.

"I know, it looks like he's a new person," Haya spoke when seeing Lucas playing with his face and making the child laugh.

"Maybe we were actually wrong, just like Kali said." She whispered to Haya and then glanced at Kali who had a kind and eased expression on her face.

Both Xina and Haya liked Kali for her nice and tender personality. Even when Kali was in dragon form, she was still a very delicate lizard to them.

She patiently waited for them to show up in the city of elves and cooperated when stealing the gem with no complaints.

She understood pretty much everything that they were saying to her and was putting a lot of effort to help them to achieve it.

Her submissive actions were something that Haya and Xina were proud of, especially Haya since their previous dragon wasn't as obedient as Kali during his first mission of retrieving the gem.

Kali looked generous to them, and Lucas was a brat but now they slowly started to change their opinions when they saw how Lucas was acting toward that child.

"Should we tell them about Notru?" Xina moved her head away from Kali and looked at Haya.

He had a blank expression with no emotions on it again, Haya was back to his usual self.

"No, I don't think it's a good idea now..." He paused and forcingly blinked with his eyes, "I mean, just look at them now..."
