CH 89

[The Third Reincarnated Person]

“That uniform, a student of the academy? Why’re you here?” (Nanashino)

“No, I should be the one asking that. Why is a boss character here?” (Sakurai)

“Hah?” (Nanashino)

“Huh?” (Sakurai)

Nanashino frowns at the words I said back in reflex.

Or rather, Nanashino Katsumi in the game was a taciturn one; he shouldn’t be the sort who speaks in a youthful tone like this guy. Then, who the heck is he?

“……Ahh, so you’re also a reincarnated person.” (Sakurai)

After pondering for a little while, I came to that conclusion.

Because that would be the most plausible explanation as to why his tone is different.

“Also, huh. In other words, you’re a reincarnated person, as well.” (Nanashino)

Hearing me, Nanashino says with a grin, seemingly having become interested in me.

The smile is different from that of Nanashino Katsumi who was introduced as ‘cool and quiet’ on the official website; it’s an innocent smile like that of a child who found a toy.

That alone is enough to completely convince me that the guy in front of me is a reincarnated person.

“Your face. I don’t think I remember ever seeing it before, was there such a character in the game?” (Nanashino)

“No offense, but unlike the privileged you, I was reincarnated as a mob character.” (Sakurai)

“Hah, unlucky you. Well, if you’re also a reincarnated person… oh, right.” (Nanashino)

Nanashino, turning to me with the blood-stained two-handed sword in his hand, points at the knights scattered about on the ground with the tip of the sword.

“I killed these guys just now. I might continue to be at odd with the knights in the future, y’see. So, I killed them to see how strong veteran knights are.” (Nanashino)

“Yeah?” (Sakurai)

“So, what do you think of what I did? Got anything you wanna say to me?” (Nanashino)

“Anything I wanna say?” (Sakurai)

I look at the fallen knights. They’re lying in a pool of blood without moving a muscle; their lives clearly have left their bodies.

Nanashino grins at me like he’s anticipating my response, but I totally have no idea what he’s getting at.

Is it that? He’s trying to see if I’m the kind of guy who’s driven by righteous indignation?

“Hmm…” (Sakurai)

Well, it’s certainly not a pleasant sight to see, but… I’m not gonna say anything since this is just Nanashino’s one-sided attempt to get information, I don’t gain anything out of it.

It will be a different story if it’s related to leveling, but since it seems to be irrelevant to it, I simply disinclined to give my opinion.

However, isn’t rude to not answer when you’re asked?

Having come to that conclusion from my experiences so far, I cross my arms and ponder “Hmm, ngg.” I then somehow manage to wring out an answer and voice it,

“Well… umm, that’s right. How many experience points they gave?” (Sakurai)

“Experience points? …are you talking about theexperience points?” (Nanashino)

“Experience points means experience points. Does it have any other meanings?” (Sakurai)

“Pu, haha! Ahahahaha! Experience points, how many experience points they gave, you ask! Ahahaha!” (Nanashino)

Nanashino suddenly starts laughing hearing my reply.

He leans against the wall, holding his belly like he can’t bear it. When he finishes, he wipes his tears that came out from laughing too much, turns to me, and starts talking in jovial mood,

“I see, so you’re the same type as me! That’s how it should be! This world is a game, and we are players! The rules of this world don’t apply to us, we can do anything we want!” (Nanashino)

“I don’t know about that, but you can take it that way if it makes you happy. Now, if you’re not going to tell me how many experience points they gave, I’ll get going as I have things I gotta do.” (Sakurai)

“Hey, hey, we’re both a reincarnated person (player), so let’s talk some more, okay? Yeah, experience points, was it? My bad, maybe because my body is that of a boss character, I don’t gain experience points, so I have no clue.” (Nanashino)

The moment he’s done talking, Nanashino closes the distance between us and reach out his arm to wind it around my shoulders. Although I try to grab it with my hand, he silently brushes it away without changing his joyful expression.

For the time being, I tell him I’ll hear him out if he helps set up the firecrackers, and then he says he might as well, since he’s free today, so we go out into the hallway and starts setting up the firecrackers.

———

“And y’know, for some damn reason, the Sword Saint is still alive, and he poked his nose into our business. Even though we fought him 3 on 1, we still totally lost. I could only get the upper hand when I finally used ‘World Intervention (System Command)’, damn that crazy, cheat geezer. Because of him, most members of the Black Sword have dropped dead… well, maybe it was a good thing cause it saved me the effort to purge the guys from the opposing factions. Thanks to it, I’ve become able to do anything I want, so I should take it as a blessing in disguise, I guess! Just that, although I’m thinking of strengthening myself in case I run into that shitty geezer again, I can’t get experience points because this body’s data is that of a boss character’s, and the only weapon I can wield is ‘Eckesachs’; don’t you think it’s too much?” (Nanashino)

“Just why’s this guy keep prattling on and on even though I haven’t asked him anything…” (Sakurai)

“Also—” (Nanashino)

After about 5 minutes we began setting up the firecrackers, Nanashino said he got tired, leaned his back against the wall nearby and started enthusiastically talking about himself.

He told me about various things such as how he came to this world about two years ago, how the Black Sword was in the brink of destruction due to the opera house incident, and etc. Heck, he even told me about things which I doubted should be shared with someone else like the ‘World Intervention (System Command)’, his equipment restriction, and the fact that he has become the leader of the remnants of the organization and is able to have them move as he likes.

To be honest, he looked the very picture of someone talking about their impressions and dissatisfaction of a game; he gives off the feeling of being out of touch with the reality.

For comparison, if I am strange, then this guy is ‘alien’.

He’s not crazy about leveling like me; his worldview is just plain different.

“Hm? Oh yeah, you were reincarnated as a mob character, weren’t you? Do you get any perks? Or do you get a penalty or something, instead?” (Nanashino)

“I have a level limit of 50, and my status is 30% lower than that of the main characters’.” (Sakurai)

“You gotta be kidding me, right!? For real!? You did well for staying alive in such a state… wouldn’t you die many times in the dungeon?” (Nanashino)

Nanashino’s eyes go round in complete surprised.

Does he find it amusing despite the surprise? The corners of his mouth are lifted up.

“I knew it, mobs sure are worthless. No, don’t get me wrong, I also have the time when I thought there might be a hidden gem at the level of the main characters among the humans in this world, so I tried out various things. For a week straight, I tried having them fight with the monsters I had caught outside and learn skills. But they didn’t get stronger at all. Thinking that all my efforts went up in smoke, I snapped and things ended up a bit ugly. What I’m trying to say is, main characters get chosen as the main characters for a reason.” (Nanashino)

This guy is so absorbed in his story that I find it hard to stop him.

It makes it extra unbearable for me who doesn’t enjoy conversation in the first place.

That said, even though some of his remarks sounds outrageous, the words ‘World Intervention (System Command)’ he said earlier piqued my interest.

If I take ‘System Command’ in the literal sense of the words, it will probably mean a ‘command’ to the ‘system’ that has already been constructed.

I’m not a guy who goes that much into details, so my understanding is shallow, but to give you an easy-to-understand example of system commands, it is like the list of menus that appears when you right-click the mouse when using a computer, perhaps?

Certainly, a video game is consisted of programs that run on a game console (system), which then repeats the commands from the programs.

But, although this world is a ‘game world’, it itself is not a ‘game’.

This world that has become reality is not programs that runs on a system, but a real world.

It may be possible to insist that this world is a system, but it is only possible for the gods who created this world to give commands to it; it should be impossible for a single human being to do so.

That’s why I got interested when Nanashino said it so naturally like it was nothing.

“Hey, what is this ‘World Intervention (System Command) you’re talking about?” (Sakurai)

“Hm? You don’t know about ‘World Intervention (System Command)’? Hey, hey, are you for real… that said, it’s not that weird for a mob character to not notice it, I guess. If your status is lower by 30%, then your talent is probably correspondingly lower too, after all. It’s highly likely that you can’t use it, to begin with.” (Nanashino)

“Rather than naturally dissing me, can you just answer my question?” (Sakurai)

“Oops, my bad, I have no such intention. I’ll tell you about it as an apology… or so I want to say, but this is my precious trump card, see. I’m not gonna tell you if there’s nothing in it for me.” (Nanashino)

“I have information about Amanai Hayato, the protagonist. His personality, relationships, skill composition, you name it. What say you?” (Sakurai)

“Hee. Alright, it’s a deal.” (Nanashino)

If the System Command Nanashino mentioned actually has any influence on this world, I may be able to use it to find something that can be used for leveling.

That’s why I’m not reluctant to give him compensation, I have no hesitation in disseminating information on the ‘Protagonist (Amanai Hayato)’.

By giving information to both sides, only I will profit in the end; this is the dark secret of diplomacy, ladies and gentlemen!

The information on Amanai may seem to be important because of the tag ‘Protagonist’, but in reality, it is not that big of a deal.

After all, he’s the kind of person who will acquire a new appropriate skill, which will then change his performance and battle style drastically, if he’s in trouble; if this guy doesn’t go attacking him immediately after hearing the information, it will end up being meaningless.

If I bluff telling him that Amanai has a connection with the Sword Saint, just in case, he most likely won’t attack him right away.

(So, forgive me, Amanai. For the sake of leveling… Imma sell you out!)

While apologizing to the protagonist who is not around, I succeed in making a deal with Nanashino and begin listening on information about the ‘World Intervention (System Command)’.
