CH 131

[True Monster Tamer]

About four hours had passed since Joseph Asanaga launched an attack on the Saintess with his daughter.

The sun had already set, and along with it, gone the figures of the pedestrian, save for the local law enforcers.

Some law enforcers would occasionally pass by the great library and catch the sight of the knights blocking the entrance, before leaving with a bow.

None of them was able to tell that the elite knights had been turned into Joseph’s puppets.

Joseph and Ayako were currently standing right on the middle of the rooftop of the great library. The location was completely invisible from the ground due to the shape of the building.

The only room in the cathedral overlooking its location was the office of Terrence, the manager of this great library. But he, along with his men, had been taken control of by Joseph. Under this situation, it was unlikely anyone would notice the abnormality happening in the great library in a short time.

“I took them too lightly, no, I had become conceited—that, I have to admit. In the first place, who would’ve thought they’d be strong enough as to survive the cooperation between me and my dear Ayako.”

“…………!”

“Please don’t blame me, Ayako. You couldn’t finish off the Saintess, either. Now, let’s forgive each other’s failure, okay?”

Ayako wasn’t able to speak to begin with, but even if she was, she wouldn’t be able to refute Joseph’s words, either.

Because Ayako’s magically created chain was the real trump card in the assassination of the Saintess, and Joseph’s job was just to create a diversion.

“Well, that being said, we’ve still got some time left. It’d probably take 2 days for the church to notice something wrong. They have nowhere else to escape, so let’s strike when they come out.”

“……”

In response to the nonchalant Joseph, Ayako clenched her teeth and wore an impatient look on her face.

Sure, as Joseph said, it’d take some time until the abnormality got detected.

But in the time Joseph had been spending to dote on Ayako, she’d accumulated experience as a fighter, as a warrior.

And from that experience of hers, she believed that giving the enemy two days’ worth of free rein was the same as giving them a chance to turn the tables.

Although they had no escape, they were locking themselves in a barrier, and she had no way to touch them. The whole situation was seen as nothing but a big blunder Ayako.

She had chosen to perform the assassination in the great library because if the assassination succeeded, it’d take some time before someone noticed it, to begin with.

She assassinated, got the item she wanted, and made her escape. By the time the church noticed something wrong, she’d be long gone. That was the ideal situation she had in mind, and for that, having time to spare was a must.

Because she’d be killing Joseph, no, getting herself free from the hands of the devil, in the process.

The key to free herself was right in front of her eyes, yet she couldn’t get it yet. Faced with that fact, Ayako recalled the information she had heard from Nanashino Katsumi to comfort herself.

[Alright, lemme tell you before that lunatic Joseph comes back. The Saintes in the Elf Territory owns a blue staff. If you smear it with her blood, it’ll turn into ‘Deadly Sins Holy Staff (Punisher)’. There’s a legend passed down about this weapon which says ‘Stain the pure blue with the blood of the Saintess, and the color of sin it shall be dyed. Only then, shall it possess to give the salvation of death to the sinful souls who are wandering about in this world’. The wandering sinful souls here refer to ghost-type monsters, which means it’ll work wonders on Joseph, considering that he turned into a demon-kin using a Parasite Ghost.]

The legend Nanashino was talking about was the abridged version of the item description of the ‘Deadly Sins Holy Staff (Punisher)’ in the game.

He’d realized even earlier than Sakurai that the game’s extra backstories created to make the game world’s richer was actually having a real effect in this world.

Hence why he’d concluded that the ‘Deadly Sins Holy Staff (Punisher)’, which had the effect of amplifying damage against ghost-type monsters in the game, had the ‘power to kill Joseph’ and used it as a bargain chip to draw Ayako to his side.

How accurate is that information? Ayako obviously had that doubt, but being parasitized by Joseph, she had no way to get past his surveillance and confirm the accuracy of the information.

That was why for Ayako, who had spent her entire life without ever finding any clue to eliminate Joseph, the information provided by Nanashino could be said to be the only hope. She had no choice but to cling to it.

Is there a way, a way to break this deadlock?

That thought had been repeating itself over and over again in Ayako’s mind since the Saintess locked herself in the forbidden book section. She knew it wouldn’t do her any good, hence she began to reconsider her plan but, at that time.

“What? A monster? Where did it come from?”

Joseph, standing next to her, suddenly exclaimed in confusion in response to what he was seeing through the meat puppets (knights) he controlled.

A three-headed goose-like monster had appeared from the inside of the great library, and it released a strange voice before attacking the knights who were gathered in the lobby on the first floor.

“Gyokkeee!!”

Immediately after the monster’s steel helmets-covered-three heads took a big swing, their necks stretched out, the heads slung out vigorously due to the centrifugal force. The moment the heads landed, they blew up, scattering the fragments of their helmets to the surroundings like a shotgun shot.

As the blown-up heads returned with the stretched necks, the steel helmets regenerated, then the monster began to swing its heads again for the next attack.

The knights fired off arrows to intercept it, but they were all deflected by the swung steel helmets-covered-heads. And even if they got past the heads, they’d be blocked by the wings that protect the monster’s body.

“……?”

“I’m not sure, either. A monster appeared from the back of the first all of a sudden. It’d be problematic if it were to go outside… I’ll be sending the knights stationed at the underground and the entrance as reinforcement. There’s only one way to get to the underground anyway—what?”

A new monster appeared in front of the puppets controlled by Joseph. And it wasn’t just one.

Mushroom-shaped monsters made their way over from between the bookshelves while spinning and making roaring noisily around, sending both knights and even their own kind flying away without care.

A devilish demonic monster with a black sheep’s head, whose only upper body out of an open grimoire, was swinging around the bookshelves and going on a rampage.

A 3 meters tall slender Pierrot wearing a cracked mask swung around the meat hammer it held in both hands and attacked a nearby monster, cackling while it did so.

Its target, a fluorescent slime, was smashed into bits, scattering to the surroundings; but then, from the scattered bits new slimes were born anew.

“What? What’s happening? We should hold them off with the knights for the time being.”

“……!!!”

“Huh? Oh, okay. Wait a second.”

Ayako asked Joseph to share the view of the puppets with her to see the situation inside.

Since she was also a puppet created by Joseph, he could share the view of the knights with her.

“……”

If she had to use one word to describe the sight, then it’d be ‘madness’.

The monsters rampaging in the great library dragged in other monsters in their attempt to attack the knights, and the knights attacked the other monsters, misunderstanding that they were the ones who’d attacked them.

Some knights ignored them and followed their command to take down the monsters weaker than themselves, whereas some monsters—whose interest probably piqued seeing them—started imitating their actions and went to attack the slimes rolling in the vicinity.

Joseph was an outstanding puppeteer, and his mastery of martial arts was on par with average adventurers.

Hence why he was able to control the more than 50 knights at the same time to barely hold off the monsters by using their swords and bows—albeit it took him all he had. That being said, at the rate things were going, the monsters were going to overrun the great library before long.

“Where’s all these monsters coming from? Is it the defense mechanism of the great library? No, that’s unlikely. In that case, just what in the world is going on?”

He was essentially a craftsperson and lacked a fundamental experience as a warrior.

All Joseph could do was to keep exterminating the slimes that were continuing to grow in numbers to the point that they were cramming the entire building so that they didn’t go outside, whereas Ayako inwardly clicked her tongue and searched for the source of the mess through the view she was sharing with the knights.

Then, something appeared in the corner of the view.

She could see a boy—whose lips curled up in a deliberate wicked manner—laughing sardonically.

“Hehahahahahahaa!! Go, destroy everything in your path! Have a good look, you imbeciles! This is true way of monster taming! And I am the true monster tamer!! Haahahahaha!!!”
