Chapter 4 (Past) The Villain and The Knight’s Oath

“Hey, do you want to play knight?”

“Again? I’m tired of it.”

“That’s fine. It’s important to practice in advance. Hey, Alberto. I want to play knight.”

What Rosemary meant by playing knight was the act of having the princess repeat the scenes with a knight who was loyal to her for an extended amount of time.

A dreaming six-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy in the peak of his youth had opposing views, but in the end, Alberto succumbed to the pressure and agreed to play the knight’s game.

“Alberto will be knighted, won’t he?”

“That’s right.”

“Then protect me when I become a princess.”

A childhood friend set a little objective for Alberto, who had taken it for granted that he would become a knight, following in the footsteps of his family, who had been knights for generations.

His father told him to work as a knight to protect Rosemary in the future, but Alberto intended to do so without being told.

This is because she was important to Alberto, having grown up with her as a childhood friend, even though they had been master and servant since childhood.

“I hope Alberto will be a knight like the one in this book.”

A knight kneels and vows his fealty to the princess in the drawings of the picture book that the girl had read many times.

Alberto was familiar with the contents of the picture book, which depicted the yearnings of young girls because he had read it many times.

Rosemary gazes at the picture book with sparkling jade eyes.

She was determined to be the future fiancée of the crown prince, and every day, between rehearsals, she would play with Alberto and look at picture books.

He had to suppress his desire to play, study, practice dances, learn manners…

Although he missed her earnestness, Alberto also learned to use a sword and studied hard with the goal of protecting her.

To fulfill a promise he made as a child.

A short time after he was finally made an official knight, disturbing rumors began in the royal court.

Rosemary, the crown prince’s fiancée, has invited a man into her private chambers.

It can’t be true.

Alberto spat out what he considered a frivolous rumor.

The next rumor was about Rosemary’s extravagance.

A dressmaker revisited the palace. A jeweler visited on Rosemary’s orders.

He ignored those rumors, too. But he felt a little uneasy.

However, as a newly knighted man, Alberto could not do anything. He served under orders, sometimes leaving the capital on expeditions.

After being away on an expedition for a while, Alberto returned. It was already too late.

Rosemary was imprisoned for treason and attempted murder and was scheduled to be executed.

He was astonished and wanted to object but was stopped by the Knight Commander.

In a rage, blood flowed from his clenched fists. When Alberto defied the Knight Commander with a piercing glare, he slapped Alberto hard on the cheek.

He said it was too late.

He said he had no choice but to endure.

When Alberto was threatened with execution if he disobeyed, he cried in frustration.

“When I become a princess, protect me.”

Alberto could not keep his promise.

Alberto was under house arrest and holed up in his dark room when he was visited by his childhood friend’s brother, Reinaldo Hubert.

He had the same golden hair and jade eyes as his older sister. The last time he saw him, he was ten years old and still looked very young, but his eyes were ice-cold, so cold that it was hard to believe that he was the same person as the boy standing in front of me now.

The figure walking slowly was as cold and beautiful as a ghost.

“I want to save my sister Rosemary.”

The boy’s voice was quiet but unwavering, possibly in the process of changing voice due to adolescence.

“I need your help.”

A small hand was held out.

At this point, Alberto felt as if he were making a pact with the devil.

How much of a relief that is.

If the devil is here, he’ll gladly sign up.

“I will gladly accept your request.”

“I hope Alberto will be a knight like the one in this book.”

He nodded to Rosemary, who smiled back at him at the bottom of his memory.

‘I’ll make it happen. I will become the knight she desires and pledge my loyalty. That was the purpose of my life when I fell in love with her.’
