CH 31

Me in My Previous Life, Me in This Life

Amidst the frantic gallop of the horse, my consciousness had become somewhat foggy.

Despite it all, somehow reaching the capital city, was it a miracle after all?

Or was it thanks to Rosemary?

I felt closer to Rosemary than I had ever felt before.

Up until that point, I had perceived Rosemary’s presence as a mere memory, but now it felt as if she were my alter ego, creating a strange sensation.

Thanks to the feeling of being possessed, I, who lacked any equestrian experience, urged the horse on and successfully arrived at the royal capital.

My exhausted body longed for rest and recovery, but there was no room for such luxury.

After a struggle, I finally made it to the royal capital, where Alberto saved me and graciously offered me a much-needed rest at the familiar headquarters of the Knights’ Corps.

I knew there was no time to spare, so I pleaded with Alberto to help me meet Reynaldo somehow, but I didn’t receive a positive response.

It was frustrating.

I want to head to the castle immediately and talk to Reynaldo.

The noise outside seems to have subsided, but Alberto hasn’t returned.

I got up from the bed and quietly opened the door, wondering if I had been left behind.

It had been a long time since I had visited the knight’s quarters, and the atmosphere was different from when I had worked there.

There were voices issuing instructions and the sound of hurried footsteps coming from outside the window, creating a sense of busyness. In contrast, the inside of the headquarters was quiet.

Originally, the headquarters is used as a waiting and resting facility for knights, so it was natural for there to be few people. However, perhaps due to the commotion happening outside, there was no sign of people at all.

I glanced around the area and, as a precaution, double-checked to make sure there was no one present before leaving the room.

Hastily making my way through the quarters, I walked along the hallway, searching for Alberto.

It was convenient that there were no people around, which was unusual since I would normally encounter members of the Knights’ Corps as I walked. This made it easier for me to search for someone.

Suddenly, I could hear a familiar voice in the silent hallway.

The voice I heard conversing bore a resemblance to Prince Risel’s voice, which I hadn’t heard in a long time.

I stood at the corner of the hallway, trying not to be seen.

“I was aware that you and Duke Rose were contemplating revenge against my parents. But that won’t resolve anything. Why can’t you see that it will only lead to history repeating itself?”

The voice, filled with strong condemnation, was indeed that of Prince Risel.

“I understand that Prince Risel, who has no knowledge of the past, wouldn’t understand. The sorrow and anger of losing someone dear to you…”

Then I heard Alberto’s voice.

I had an idea of what they were talking about, so I decided to hold my breath and eavesdrop on their conversation. It wasn’t the most honorable act, but I was sure that Rosemary was somehow involved in their conversation.

“Do you know the reason why Reynaldo-sama and I have lived for the past twenty years?”

With a small smile, Alberto whispered, “Because we had a purpose of revenge, you see.”

Alberto’s voice was low and lifeless.

“Not just the King and Queen. I wanted everyone involved in Rosemary’s death to feel the same way. That includes you too, Prince Risell. Do you know? One innocent young lady lost her life a year before you were born. Even though you had no fault in it, I couldn’t help but hate you, despise you.”

The meaning of revenge, a simple word to say, was something that neither I nor Prince Risell understood.

Alberto’s demeanor, conveying his sure intent to kill, sent a shiver down my spine and made my skin crawl.

“Lord Reynaldo and I talked about revenge all night long, until the sun went down. How to punish him, how to kill him. The only purpose in our lives was to achieve revenge.”

Neither Reynaldo nor Alberto had ever told me how they had lived after Rosemary’s death.

However, now I understood that their truth was that they had no other way to live except by clinging to revenge.

If Rosemary were in the opposite position, she would have taken exactly the same actions.

The pain of having a loved one taken from you is immeasurable. The suffering, remorse, and resentment are things that only the person concerned can understand.

Even Rosemary, the person who left them behind, can’t understand it.

And as Marie, who has been reincarnated and lived a peaceful life, I can’t understand it either.

There existed a twenty-year period that only Reynaldo and Alberto could understand.

“Nevertheless, Reynaldo is trying to bring everything to an end in the best way possible to get revenge. And until that revenge is fulfilled, I can’t let you two get in the way.”

Surprised by the words “you two,” I realized that Alberto had detected me, so I revealed my hidden self.

As expected, Alberto looked straight at me, as if he had noticed.

“Miss Marie…!”

Prince Risel exclaimed in surprise when I suddenly appeared.

I responded with a glance and immediately looked at Alberto.

“I understand. I believe I understand the feelings of both of you, wanting revenge. But…”

Rosemary, who lurks within me, cries out in an inarticulate voice.

I can’t ignore those feelings.

Because Rosemary is a part of me.

“I can’t leave him alone. I don’t want to leave him alone. Please.”

I wanted to deliver Rosemary’s wish.

“I want to see Reynaldo. Alberto.”

I want to somehow convey Rosemary’s feelings within me.

I couldn’t help but wish.
