Volume 1 - CH 12

Bi Lanxing wondered, “Why would they do that?”

Bai Chunian stared at the ground in a daze until the long soot fell between his fingers and woke him up, then he answered softly, “Molten glass that naturally drips into water by the force of gravity, forming a teardrop-shaped high-density glass is called Rupert’s drop. The glass head can withstand heavy pressure, but the tail is very fragile. One of his associated abilities is similar to it. When he’s stimulated, he’ll curl up into a ball to heal himself. During that period, no one can open the ball by any external force, the only way is to cut off his tail tip, violently terminating the self-healing period, causing severe pain to force it to open up.”

This was no secret. Many documents on mermaids had written about this kind of associated ability.

“How are they going to conduct experiments without opening him up? To take blood samples, body fluid samples, to measure drug tolerance, destructive power, trauma limit, high-temperature limits, low-temperature limits, physical strength limit, and ability limit, all require the experimental subject’s cooperation.” Bai Chunian blandly recounted test items that Bi Lanxing never came into contact with, as simple as remembering what he ate for dinner last night.

“You seem to know a lot about it?”

“Not everyone is a young master like you, don’t you know?” Bai Chunian boredly peeled open the filter of his cigarette butt and tore the cotton wool inside to pass the time, “It’s just a test, yet your dad found a bodyguard to protect you.”

“Yes, some people are just lucky.” Bi Lanxing took the cigarette butt in Bai Chunian’s hand and put it out on the ground. “Lu Yan’s one. I’m used to him doing whatever he wants, Uncle Jin thinks too much, I can lead Lu Yan to win without you.”

Bai Chunian hummed softly, “That makes sense. Why didn’t I have this awareness when I was seventeen? I always thought about how to take revenge on him. For a long time, all I’ve been thinking about is how to beat him into a ball when I see him again.”

On the way to the hospital, Bi Lanxing sat in the back seat and looked at the scenery outside the window. Lu Yan curled up on his lap and dozed off, his rabbit ears covering his eyes.

Rimbaud sat crouched in the passenger seat holding his tail, picking the tip up and blowing on it, then holding it in his mouth like a human licking their cut finger to stop the pain.

As Bai Chunian drove, he stretched out a hand to Rimbaud, spreading his palm. “Give it to me.”

Rimbaud was dumbfounded, then put his hand on Bai Chunian’s hand.

“Not this,” Bai Chunian gently clutched his hand, “tail.”

After a long moment of hesitation, Rimbaud carefully placed the tip of his tail still sticky with saliva in Bai Chunian’s hand.

Bai Chunian’s cervical gland secreted calming pheromone, releasing it through sweat glands into his palm that enveloped the tip of Rimbaud’s tail.

Rimbaud hummed comfortably. His vigilance relaxed, and he closed his eyes to rest in the passenger’s seat. Bai Chunian spread out his palm and carefully observed the fishtail in his palm. There was an inconspicuous dividing line about ten centimetres up from the end, where the scales were newer and more tender, having re-grown after being cut off.

For a mermaid, cutting off ten centimetres of fishtail was as painful as chopping off a human being’s feet. Even if the fishtail could regenerate indefinitely as long as the bones weren’t cut off, the sobering pain was unforgettable for a lifetime.

Three years ago, 109 Research Institute sent researchers to buy Special Operations combat experimental subjects, saying that they were only for observation and demonstration purposes and that they would provide the experimental subjects with the most favourable living conditions. Their purchase condition was to choose the one with the highest combat rating.

As a result, the experimental subjects began a week-long crazy commotion. The 109 Research Institute promised everyone who wanted to leave this dark prison that they would cover for the loss of those who died prematurely because of this selection battle. So no one stopped this chaos that belonged to the biochemical monsters.

A week later, only Bai Chunian and Rimbaud were still alive in the transparent ecological tank, but only Rimbaud was taken out alive. The merman’s sharp claws made a deep cut on Bai Chunian’s chest, spilling his internal organs and intestines all over the floor. After being stitched up and suffering from repeated infections for two weeks, they sold him as a toy at a cheap price to entertain those perverted rich people.

Until Lu Shangjin saw his ability in the underground boxing arena and brought him home, and Yan Yi gave him a set of clean clothes. It happened to be the Friday when Lu Yan came back from boarding school. Bai Chunian didn’t go out, he hid on the stairs and stared at them watching TV together on the living room sofa.

But it seemed that these three years at 109 Research Institute hadn’t been so comfortable for Rimbaud either. Bai Chunian felt a little relieved but more strangely uncomfortable.

“Didn’t you ask for it?” Bai Chunian thought to himself, bringing the tip of Rimbaud’s tail close to his lips for a kiss.

The kindergarten was only a fifteen-minute drive from the hospital. Before arriving, Bai Chunian drove the car around the hospital to observe. He suddenly stopped and stared at a mass foam in the open-air basin.

The other three people’s attention were also attracted to the foam. It looked as if someone had squeezed a large amount of liquid hand soap, then created a pile of foam out of it and threw it in the pool unrinsed.

After a long while, the foam moved and squirmed slowly, crawling out of the pool under the eyes of the four, then it scampered away.

Bi Lanxing released his vines a step earlier and caught the high-leaping bunch of foam, and hauled back his catch like hauling a fishing net. Lu Yan and Rimbaud got out of the car and held down the struggling foam, revealing two large eyes.

Sweeping away the foam, an omega in an armed team uniform was exposed, with a team name tag “Is There an A?” on his chest.

Bai Chunian couldn’t help but laugh. “Spittlebug omega, can make a disguise with foam ghillie suit, it’s a pity you’re placed in a city map, if this were a forest map, no one would’ve been able to find you for a week. Where’s your teammates?”

The spittlebug omega swept away the foam on his head and body, then sat on the ground with his legs in arms, showing a well-behaved smile. “Behind you.”

Even before the words fell, an ear-piercing scream sounded from behind. The terrifying noise was so sharp that it almost pierced through the eardrums. The glass of the hospital’s high-rise building shattered in an instant, and Rimbaud immediately rolled into a ball back into the car. Even Bai Chunian’s head went blank.

In the shade of the tree behind, stood a long-haired omega in the same-coloured team uniform as the spittlebug omega. Half of his body hid behind the tree trunk timidly, a super high decibel scream escaped from his throat.

Bell-bird gland’s J1 differentiation ability, Destroy Strong Sound: Continuous high-decibel noise, could be used to interfere with the enemy’s hearing and sonic signals.

Originally, the ability of low-level glands wouldn’t cause trauma to Bai Chunian. The high ranking Bai Chunian was a white lion at the top of the species food chain. He had both level suppression and species suppression against the bell-bird omega, but the bell-bird scream was pervasive and gave Bai Chunian a terrible headache.

Bai Chunian rubbed his temples and looked around as another brown-haired omega jumped out over the wall. His appearance wasn’t too eye-catching and somewhat ordinary, but even though he did nothing, Bai Chunian still felt the pheromone he released, which was a sea spider omega.

Sea spiders were too small to be noticed, no animals were willing to use them as food, so they had no natural enemies.

Sea Spider gland’s J1 differentiation ability, Suppression Offset: Pull both sides to the same level to offset level suppression and species suppression.

Spittlebug Omega took this opportunity to break away from the shackles of the vines and took several anti-detonators from Bi Lanxing and Lu Yan, put them in his pockets, and ran away.

“This is an all-omega team?” Bai Chunian got even more of a headache. Because the all-omega team had a gap with alpha in terms of strength and abilities, they could only choose this eerie style of play, and it was their tactic not to face the fight but to disgust people.

Bai Chunian was a little irritated, and it was really embarrassing to use his own differentiation ability to deal with a few difficult omegas.

Suddenly, a young omega with dark hair and blonde eyes, a teary mole dotted at the corner of his phoenix eyes, jumped down from the first floor of the hospital, exuding a sombre and feminine aura.

“I’m the captain of this team.” The omega tossed up his pistol, gently catching it in his hand and spinning it around, slowly walking towards Bai Chunian. With the muzzle resting on Bai Chunian’s lower abdomen, he smiled lightly, “I detect that you’re all safe this hour, the Ghost team are still killing everyone everywhere, there’s no need for us to fight and be two losers.”

Crow gland’s J1 differentiation ability, Death Prediction: Predict the survival of the tested object within one hour.

“So.” The black-haired omega raised his gun and tapped on Bai Chunian’s belt, his lips curled up:

“Do you want to team up, Brother?”
