Volume 1 - CH 23

The wolf alpha was successfully rescued out of hemorrhagic shock. Bai Chunian breathed a sigh of relief, took out the only quick recovery injection he had just obtained from the fixed ammunition box and put it into He Suowei’s hand. He explained seriously, “Take it. You need this more than we do. Protect yourself.”

Quick recovery injection was a rare item equivalent to a chance of resurrection. As long as the injection was made within ten seconds after the health bar was cleared, half of the health bar would recover and elimination wouldn’t happen.

“Stay away from me… I’m not interested in alphas.” He Suowei struggled to get up holding the faintly-aching wound and leaned against the railing of the stairs to rest. The ATWL exam made the death simulation feel absolutely realistic. He Suowei was still in a daze after walking on the verge of death.

Fearing that the smell of blood would attract monsters, the team quickly withdrew to their original positions. Rimbaud attached himself to the steel lightbox on the ceiling and cut off the corridor on the third floor of building A with a high-voltage power grid.

The desperate voices of the remaining two team members came from the communicator that He Suowei was wearing. “Ge! Ge? Are you still there? We ran to the eighth floor! ”

He Suowei replied with a few sentences.

Du Mo was originally hiding at the end. But at some point, he moved to the wolf alpha’s side and asked intently, “Did you see them? What do they look like? What weapons do they use?”

Bai Chunian’s gaze stayed on Du Mo’s face for a second or two, and then he turned back to listen to He Suowei’s description with interest.

“I don’t know. I didn’t see anything.” He Suowei sat on the steps awkwardly, unaware of the mud and blood covering his body. He said drearily, “We saw right away that the elevator door was open when we came into Building C. Wen Yi went in with a gun and observed around, but there was nothing. I was worried there would be a trap, so I took them up the stairs. Unexpectedly, when we climbed to the third floor, something invisible attacked us. Then he died. And I felt a sharp, stiff and suffocating pain all over my body. Our blood was all over the floor but I couldn’t tell where the wound was. ”

“If this were an actual combat, we’d already be all dead.” He Suowei closed his eyes in guilt, his face showing a sense of self-blame and fear like that belonging to a young soldier.

“Relax.” Bai Chunian sat casually on the windowsill and swayed his legs, organizing sticky bombs and slingshots to hang on his body, “So only the dead guy got into the elevator?”

“Yes. There was no light in the elevator. So I gave Wen Yi a flashlight.”

“That’s very interesting.” Bai Chunian changed into a comfortable position, crossed his legs, and asked while holding his left cheek, “We have a lot of useful information now, so if you want to join, tell us your information in exchange.”

He Suowei was well-prepared for Bai Chunian sending him a teaming up invitation. He wasn’t surprised, and instead, out of habit he started discussing the conditions with Bai Chunian. “You seem to put me in a very passive position.”

“How can it be?” Bai Chunian laughed, “Now all the remaining teams on the field are gathering towards this place. You’ve already started losing members, it makes no sense if you want to fight alone again. As you can see, we’re not interested in being the number one, we are no threat to you.”

In fact, the Ghost Hunting Team had already made up their mind to team up with Bai Chunan before coming to the research institute. Since he mentioned it first, He Suowei simply agreed, thinking of taking advantage of favorable conditions, but acted reluctant to gain the psychological upper hand.

Bai Chunian was also thinking, this team of North American gray wolves was obviously a team of exam helpers, but they stole all the spotlights, not in the slightest fear of attracting the examination authority’s attention. That meant, the power behind them must not be small, even if Bai Chunian couldn’t find out who their boss was in this period of time, they at least wouldn’t recklessly offend people and find trouble for themselves.

He Suowei called the other two team members through the communicator and asked them to come down and gather. And at the same time, he opened his mission book to exchange information.

The four members of the Ghost Hunting Team were assigned the most difficult three-star tasks. They each only had one mission, namely:

“Aiyo, we’re so unlucky.” Bai Chunian tsked and sighed, “It must be that we’ve spent all the luck of the next half of our life after winning the “another bottle” in the bought drink.”

“Don’t talk nonsense. ”

“From the missions you four got, only one mentions the location. So let’s start from this location.” Bai Chunian spread out his task book, “One of our tasks is to read the data of a microchip in the public computer room on the tenth floor of the research institute. That’s the only way we can obtain the unknown information.”

The sound of two hurried footsteps came from the end of the corridor in Building C. The two remaining members of the Ghost Hunting Team rushed back after receiving news from He Suowei.

“When we went downstairs, we heard some yelling and fighting in Building B.”

“Captain, are you okay? We’re all companions but you keep pushing us away at critical moments.”

“So should I leave you guys here with me and wait for the whole group to be killed? ”

“Wu.”

Bai Chunian thought for a while and saw Lu Yan squatting by the elevator in a daze, so he said, “Maybe the voltage of the backup power supply is unstable, so that’s why the elevator is sometimes good and sometimes not.”

“No. It’s not broken.” Lu Yan stared at the floor number displayed above the button, “Look. It just moved again, and it’s already on the sixth floor.”

“Then use the Cunning Rabbit’s Cave to get in and have a look. ”

Lu Yan’s J1 differentiation ability, The Cunning Rabbit’s Cave, was comparable to dimension doors and it was a very practical ability that allowed the owner to pass through the barrier between two adjacent spaces.

“I don’t want to… what if there are monsters in it. I’m not afraid of coming face-to-face with them… But I’m afraid of monsters the most. ” Lu Yan couldn’t help but took two steps back, his rabbit ears trembling.

Suddenly, the number on the elevator began to descend from the sixth floor.

Fifth floor.

Fourth floor.

Third floor.

Originally, they thought it would continue to descend, but the elevator slowly stopped with a clang to the floor they were in.

A cold electronic voice prompted, “You’ve arrived at the third floor. ”

Everyone waited with bated breath for the elevator to open next. There were clicking sounds of magazines and pulling bolts and all the guns were aimed at the small elevator.

Bai Chunian waited patiently for a while, then approached the door and pressed the switch, but the elevator didn’t respond.

While the crowd was immersed in their own thoughts in silence, hysterical screams and chaotic gunfire erupted from the adjacent Building B. The bullets shattered the glass, and large pieces of debris fell from above, fluttering in the air into the ground.

Soon, everyone present heard another kill announcement.

Experiment No. 1513 kills four members of the [Empire Awakening] team,

[Empire Awakening] The whole team is eliminated.

At the same time, the door of the elevator in front of them slowly opened with a click.

Bai Chunian switched on the flashlight and looked inside, but the elevator was completely empty, except for some advertisements for educational institutions posted on the four walls. Bai Chunian looked into the mirror on the smooth steel wall, tidied up his hair, and felt relieved that he was still handsome.

Du Mo rubbed his sore temples as if he just woke up from a dream, “Sorry. I was just predicting our situation. ”

The J1 differentiation ability of the crow omega was Death Foresight. He could predict the target’s survival within one hour. But the number of detections was limited: only four people at a time. And this ability had a cooldown time of one hour.

“I tested four people. “Du Mo took a deep breath and seriously said, “Bai Chunian, safe.”

“He Suowei, safe.”

“The pigtailed brother from the Ghost Hunting Team. I don’t know your name.” Du Mo looked at He Wenxiao. “You’re going to die in fifty-three minutes.”

“I will die in ten minutes.” Du Mo said lightly, “I have calculated all possibilities for escape, like going upstairs, downstairs, and all the other possibilities, none of these gave me a different outcome.”

“Then you better make use of it before you die, your skills are too practical.” Bai Chunian grabbed Du Mo’s arm and dragged him away, turning back. “Rimbaud goes up to the tenth floor with me.  Upas Tree and the Rabbit stay here and keep an eye on the elevator. The Ghost Hunting Team goes to Building C. Call with the communicator if something happens. I’ve written the channel password on the dusty window.”

Rimbaud floated using electromagnetic charge, sat sideways on the handrail of the stairs and slid down easily. Bai Chunian dragged the crow omega to climb the stairs. According to the mission book, there was a computer equipped with a chip reader in the hall on the tenth floor.

Du Mo and Lu Yan each got a chip from the library archivist. Bai Chunian first plugged in the chip that Du Mo handed over. A gray progress bar appeared on the display, quickly reading the content in the chip.

After reading, it automatically jumped to a pure black webpage with only one line of letters and numbers that looked like a formula:

A1-B1

“That’s it? Nothing more?” Bai Chunian knocked on the enter key a few times, then picked up the computer and slapped it, “Is it stuck?”

Rimbaud stared and thought his way of repairing the computer was too primitive. So he pushed Bai Chunian away contemptuously, sat on the computer chair, and touched the keyboard.

Then he released a high voltage electricity to power up the computer. The screen turned all white and restarted.

Bai Chunian, “Haha. The main engine is smoking. ”

Du Mo covered his eyes.

“Oh…” Bai Chunian suddenly had a realization and slapped his palm. “Oh, oh, I get it. ”

“The research institute is divided into three buildings, with two elevators each. The two elevators in Building A are labeled A1 and A2, and the other four are B1 and B2, and C1 and C2.”

“It seems to us that the elevator is running around uncontrollably on its own. But in reality, it’s just that the buttons we press don’t control our elevator.”

“Then A1-B1 probably means that the elevator button we just pressed is actually controlling the elevator in Building B.”

“So.” Bai Chunian smiled awkwardly but without losing politeness, “The four members of the Empire Awakening Team may had been chased by the snake girl just now, and they had a chance to hide in the elevator. But my cheap hands pressed open the door…”
