CH 34

“Stop making trouble.”

Bai Chunian also didn’t know why he, usually the most impatient, was being particularly patient with this merman’s little tricks.

“Does it still hurt?” He re-tied Rimbaud’s loosened tie and glanced at the fins on Rimbaud’s lower body. The tail, which should be stuffed with sterilized cotton, was raised in a bit of an unnatural arc.

“Em…” Rimbaud pressed his fin along his body. From Rimbaud’s expression of holding back the pain, Bai Chunian could tell that his wound wasn’t fully healed yet, but he didn’t say anything. Bai Chunian also wasn’t like before, where he would forcibly lift Rimbaud’s fins and make him feel embarrassed.

He no longer wanted to get to the bottom of the matter to find out how these injuries came about. Rimbaud’s embarrassed appearance made one feel a bit distressed.

“You’re going to work today. How are you going there? I’ll drive you.”

Rimbaud once again took out a note from his pocket left by the president, and showed it to him. The note said: “I blocked your garage. Don’t be too conspicuous these next few days. Wait for me to finish dealing with things.”

“… Tsk, then I’ll get a taxi to take you there.”  Bai Chunian couldn’t even get a swear word out before Rimbaud once again took out a third note, which said: “I’ve also frozen all your expense accounts for the same reason as above.”

Finally, Rimbaud took out a brand new 100 yuan bill from his jacket pocket and placed it in Bai Chunian’s hand, stroked the alpha’s head, and left for work.

Bai Chunian held the banknote and stared at it blankly for a long time, then furiously threw it on the floor, stepped on it, sat on the ground and smoked a cigarette.

He hadn’t eaten properly for several days now. He only had a small bottle of water and a piece of biscuit every day in the confinement room and right now, he couldn’t even order take out… Bai Chunian suddenly remembered the fried egg Rimbaud had mounted above the fish tank.

He looked back to find that the fucking merman had taken the fried egg with him.

“Was he afraid that I’d eat it or something…” Bai Chunian leaned on the big fish tank and rested for a while. He didn’t feel it when he had just woken up, but after a while, he was starving. He yielded and picked up the 100 yuan bill from the floor, put on his flip-flops, and went out the door.

Bai Chunian wasn’t one of those pampered young masters; he was comfortable just spending 100 yuan. He first went to eat ramen at the shop downstairs, then explored the food market.

The market was full of old men and women shopping for groceries, so Bai Chunian, a tall alpha wearing a black vest with his hands in his pants pockets, looked particularly eye-catching.

“Two potatoes.”

“Pick a cabbage for me… Tsk, I don’t want that one, the leaves are all wilted.”

Bai Chunian, “Give me two pounds of whatever a fish eats.”

He bought some meat, eggs, vegetables, and fruits from the market to store in the fridge. In the end, only 10 yuan remained in his pocket, which he didn’t know how to spend.

After pondering for a while, Bai Chunian took a shower and shaved his chin clean. He changed into casual clothes and put on a black baseball cap, a mask, and sunglasses, intending to take the subway to the Alliance Police Station to see what Rimbaud was actually capable of.

When he arrived at the destination, it was already 12 am and the police station was closed.

It was no use talking to the security guard at the door in a place where ordinary people weren’t allowed to enter. Bai Chunian easily avoided the surveillance and patrols, climbed over the wall, and went through a blind spot to sneak into the office lobby and hid in the ceiling to observe.

Several omegas in police uniforms were coming back from the cafeteria with their lunch boxes. They walked through the corridor, chatting and laughing about today’s interesting events. One of the omegas whispered excitedly, “There’s a half-blooded xiao gege in our department, blond hair and blue eyes, and his eyes can glow! He’s extremely handsome!! Guess how he is down there.”

“? Very big?”

“A fishtail! A merman xiao gege!”

“Wow, impressive! Do you have a photo?”

“No, I didn’t dare take a picture. He’s very reserved. He doesn’t say even one word.”

“Good-looking alphas just love to act pretentious.”

“I just saw him in the cafeteria. He was heating up his lunch box.”

“Alpha…?” Bai Chunian sat on the ceiling vent, propping up his chin through the gap and listening to these little omegas’ chattering.

He took his phone out of his pocket and sent a message to  Rimbaud’s number. The message consisted of emojis: the word “doing” followed by tableware, was an emoji of a bowl full of rice, and a question mark at the end.

Rimbaud’s phone was given to him by the president and it was very likely that he didn’t know how to use it. Bai Chunian thought it was pretty fun this way and he wasn’t expecting a reply because there was no way that idiot could type.

He put the phone in his pocket, felt his way towards the direction of the cafeteria and climbed out of the vent. He quickly climbed along the drainage pipe to the roof, effortlessly stepped across two office buildings with his hands in his pockets, and sat down beside the transparent skylight of the cafeteria. He lowered his head to look for Rimbaud.

Rimbaud was sitting in the corner just below the skylight, wearing a police uniform with an exquisite lunch box in front of him.

Bai Chunian craned his neck to observe what Rimbaud was eating.

Rimbaud solemnly opened the lunch box that was just microwaved and unwrapped the plastic-wrapped fried egg from this morning.

“Ah, so he took it with him for lunch.” Bai Chunian lay down leisurely, propping up his cheek to watch Rimbaud eat.

But Rimbaud ate the lunch box and even ate the lid. Then, he took the fried egg and put it in another new lunch box.

The phone in his pocket vibrated, and as if he was startled, Rimbaud trembled. He vigilantly looked around only to realize that the earthquake was in his own pocket, so he took out the phone in his pocket to check it out.

Bai Chunian watched with interest as Rimbaud very slowly drew a heart on the screen to unlock it. He spent a long time before he saw the text Bai Chunian sent him.

Rimbaud cupped his face and opened his eyes from between his fingers to look at the message on his phone screen, then randomly pressed a few keys and sent a text.

Bai Chunian took out his phone and glanced at it. The message said, “→→[email protected]%-%honglanbokadinlion~。@%jiji mua→←”

“Hmph… little idiot.” Bai Chunian took a screenshot of it and posted it to his Moments with the caption: “I encountered a high-level secret code during a mission and I can’t figure it out. I’d like to ask the decoding masters to crack it.”

A few seconds later, seven or eight deciphering expert friends quarreled in the comments.

After lunch, Rimbaud received a voice message conference notice and was asked to bring a notebook and a pen. He tilted his head and listened to it many times before he understood the other party’s general meaning.

Bai Chunian was watching with excitement but at the same time, he was somewhat worried. The stupid merman looked like he couldn’t do anything in human society.

Bai Chunian temporarily went to the convenience store to buy a notebook, a pen, a piece of bread, and a lollipop. He tied them together with a fishing line, slowly lowered it from the skylight, cut the fishing line, and put the things in Rimbaud’s backpack.

Rimbaud hurriedly slid down the stair railing to the conference room. Bai Chunian took a different route to follow him. For him, it was a must to avoid all the surveillance cameras. Following the target was easy.

Rimbaud found a seat and sat down. He found food in his backpack and under his colleagues’ shocked gaze, calmly unwrapped the candy and ate it. The second before the leader came in, he ate the lollipop stick and bread wrapper, appearing as if nothing was out of the ordinary.

The content of this meeting was a serial disappearance case, which was named “Triangular Pyramid Cabin Incident” by the investigators.

It started when an escape room expert, who became popular online with some incredible escape videos, sent fans invitations to try out his latest escape room design.

The escape room expert in the video wore a hooded cloak that completely covered his hands, feet and face, and introduced his masterpiece in a shaky electronically synthesized voice. The game started by entering a mysterious triangular pyramid-shaped cabin and the only rule of this game was: ‘The lucky one who successfully walks out of the exit will get a prize of 10 million yuan’.

The video was released three days ago. According to the statistics, more than a dozen adventurers who dared to try it had accepted the challenge. These people all had different jobs including homeless people who came to try their luck, business owners on the verge of bankruptcy, as well as authors and adventurers who came looking for excitement. However, without exception, no one came back out nor was there any news about them so far.

The police investigated the identity of Leon, the escape expert who posted the video, but only found a fake IP address. Moreover, no one knew anything about the escape expert except that he stayed at the triangular pyramid cabin near Red Maple Mountain.

The leader asked the participating police officers for their opinions one by one. When he got to Rimbaud, Rimbaud was writing something in the notebook when he heard his name being called, so he raised his head and tucked his blond hair behind his ear, and said lightly, “I’d go… kill him.”

The statement was too bold. The meeting fell into chaos.

The leader walked up to Rimbaud and flipped through the notebook in front of him.

The notebook was full of bizarre doodles—a man in a cloak whose neck was suspended and broken by a rope, his eyes staring extremely wide, and his tongue sticking out very long. Next to the drawing of the gallows was a fanged piranha and a ferocious, angry cat.

It seemed that the man in the cloak was the escape expert mentioned in the meeting just now.

The leader stared at the drawing and an indescribable chill went to his spine. When he met Rimbaud’s hollow and deep gemstone eyes, he got a chilling false impression.

After arranging the business trip assignment, the meeting concluded. Rimbaud returned to his work station. His job was to organize the files, arrange the paper files and hard disk in numerical order, and then send them to the file room.

Rimbaud didn’t notice the alpha hanging on the skylight and secretly observing him. When he did sense a line of sight glued onto him, he looked up, but saw no one.

At this moment, an omega holding a stack of files came over and placed portfolios in Rimbaud’s hands one by one. Wanting to chat with Rimbaud, he tried to find something to talk to him about, “En, this is all the work for this afternoon. You just started, are you getting used to it? How do you feel about the workload?”

Rimbaud was staring at the number on the file and gave an indifferent ‘en’ sound.

The omega received the cold shoulder, so he could only find a way out of this embarrassing situation. “Then you can ask me for help if you encounter any problems.”

Rimbaud glanced at him through his raised eyelashes, but even if Rimbaud himself did not show any emotions, his sapphire eyes with a line in the middle of his pupils looked a bit too alienating. An air of indifference and loneliness surrounded his entire body.

The omega was shocked by the pair of deep, bottomless eyes. He panicked and took two steps back to his position.

Rimbaud didn’t think anything of it. After arranging one side of a bookshelf, the moisturizing bandage on his body was getting a little dry and his skin was getting a bit itchy from the dryness, so he got up to go to the pantry to wet the bandage.

He poured a glass of water, turned around, and suddenly found that there was an alpha on the single-seat sofa. He was wearing a black t-shirt, a black baseball cap, a black mask, and sunglasses.

“En?” Rimbaud immediately recognized him, putting the glass of water on the coffee table in front of Bai Chunian.

Bai Chunian took the opportunity to grab the wrist Rimbaud stretched out and tugged it hard. Rimbaud’s center of gravity was unstable and he fell into the alpha’s embrace without warning, his uniform ridden up to his chest.

They couldn’t make a scene during work hours. Rimbaud raised his hand and clutched Bai Chunian’s lower jaw so that he couldn’t make a sound. The transparent and thin web between his thumb and forefinger was protruding from the tip of Bai Chunian’s nose while his other hand took out two 100 yuan bills from his breast pocket. He stuffed them in Bai Chunian’s pants pocket and winked to coax him. “Go buy… food… don’t… make trouble.”

Bai Chunian supported Rimbaud’s thin and slender waist with one hand while the other hand pressed the back of his head. He pulled down his mask and whispered in Rimbaud’s ear, “I’m not making trouble, just checking up on a whim.”
