CH 21

Setting explanation chapter.

=======================================================

“I finally did it!”

“Congratulations.”

Today, Kili finally succeeded at [Soil Creation] magic.

With this everyone could use the simplest spells from basic magic in their special attributes.

“1 week huh. I guess that’s standard.”

“No, that’s insanely fast. It usually takes over a year just to master [Body Strengthening] magic.”

Aria reacts to my muttering with all her might.

“It does take a year to use [Body Strengthening] though. You need to be able to set things like duration and strength.”

“Duration? Strength?”

Aria and Milia tilt their heads at my words.

Their knowledge is limited to modern magic, so they get stuck on my words.

“As I’ve said before, magic reflects the magic formula that you call from the ‘source’, but at that time there are some values that should be decided in advance. For example, if it’s [Body Strengthening] like I mentioned earlier, then you’ll have to decide a time, let’s say 1 hour, after which it will continue to be applied for 1 hour.”

“Eh? I heard that [Body Strengthening] is only effective for a moment after its activation, and you can’t even carry things in that state unless you master it considerably.”

“That’s the case when it’s activated without specifying a duration. In that case, the initial value is arbitrarily entered. I think it was 1 second or so.”

I give Milia a straightforward answer.

The initial values may differ, but most magic spells have this setting.

If you don’t set a value yourself, the initial value is entered as default, but even not entering a value comes at the cost of magical power.

I suppose, anyone who has learned magic the modern way wouldn’t be setting these values.

Since Milia’s magic always turned out like that whenever she used it.

“The magic I’ve taught so far was just to convert magical power into objects and energies, so there wasn’t an initial value. That’s why they’re recommended as the first spells one should learn.”

“…”

Milia was speechless.

I suppose that makes sense. I’ve never read modern day magic books because of their crappiness, and because Milia has only read those crappy books, my magic seems extraordinary to her.

“Hey, how much longer do you want me to keep practicing with [Ignite]?”

“Yeah, Lain nii-chan! I also want to use different magic spells quickly!”

“I too, want to learn, different magic.”

Aria, Reno, and Sui bring the topic up one by one.

Ideally, they should all continue with basic magic training for at least one week, but I guess that time has passed for Sui.

I have nothing to do while I’m here.

Practicing until their magic runs out, taking a break, and then practicing again when their magic gets recovered.

I’m already bored of it.

“Nah, you need to first get used to magic. If your astandby state reaches 10 seconds, then we can move to the next stage.”

“Standby stage?”

“How should I say this… It’s, where you’re about to release your spell but don’t, or something like that…”

Saying that, I hold [Water Creation] over the tub Sui was practicing with, in activation retention state.

In this state, it feels like magic is about to be activated from your magic senses, but neither your MP is consumed, nor any event occurs.

You can also activate magic at any moment in that state.

“I can, do that. [Water Creation].”

Seeing what I was doing, Sui also puts her magic in standby state.

“Ooh, you’re doing it.”

“Sui, amazing! When did you manage to be able to do that?”

“While practicing, happened.”

“Alright, me too!”

Reno also tries to challenge herself, but immediately makes dirt using [Soil Creation].

“Damn it-! Lain nii-chan, show me once more.”

“You got it.”

I wonder if Reno possesses a good sense for magic, since whenever I do something she’s able to reproduce it soon after.

She was able to use the magic tool right after Sui, and she was even able to use [Soil Creation] a few times after I showed her how to.

“[Soil Creation]….. Alright, I did it!”

Sure enough, after seeing me and Sui hold our spells in standby state, Reno becomes able to do the same.

It seems that she’s also a kind of genius.

“Nnnn, I don’t get it. [Ignite].”

On the other hand, Aria seemed to be struggling.

“Aria should try using magic while consciously feeling the magic formula being taken into the body.”

“Magic formula taken into my body?”

“Yes. The moment you chant a spell, a magic formula is taken by your body from the ‘source’, but you can stop the magic there so that it doesn’t flow into the formula. I’m sorry I can’t explain it well since it’s more sensual than anything.”

“I got it. Thanks.”

Aria mutters to herself after hearing my advice, and continues training on her own.

“Lain nii-chan! Teach us what comes next!”

“I too, want to learn, new magic.”

“Okay. Until now, you have only converted magic into objects and energies. The next thing you’ll learn is to move things using magic.”

I begin teaching them the next magic.

“”Move things?””

“That’s right. [Water Manipulation].”

While activating magic, I touch the water in the tub created by Sui with my fingertips.

Then, ping-pong ball-sized water drops slowly floated up a few centimeters from my fingertips and returned to the water.

“”Ooooh—!””

“This is [Water Manipulation]. As I told Milia earlier, it’s a magic that requires setting a value. If you don’t set the value, it won’t activate properly either. You will need to specify where you want to move your object, using standby state. Though, as you get used to it, you might be able to activate it without having to do that.”

“Lain nii-chan! Is it the same for earth magic?”

“Yup. [Soil Manipulation].”

Saying that, I touch the soil made by Reno.

The dirt then rises about 1 centimeter, and returns after a few seconds.

“Oooooh! Let me try, [Soil Manipulation].”

“[Water Manipulation].”

Following Reno, Sui also started practicing.

I think that Reno will be able to do this one first.

That’s because there are many sensory parts in this magic.

=======================================================

The reason why the knights’ attack failed in the previous chapter is because of the function introduced in this chapter.

The default setting of [Wind Blade] is “the point where it hits the target”, so the blade dissipated the moment it hit its target. As a result, only their wounds are limited to their skin.

Lain sets his [Wind Blade] pierce its target completely and as a result, is able to kill monsters in one hit.
