CH 39

Chapter 39: Doubt

Chang Qing was unable to speak, so he had to bend over to tear off the tape. Fortunately, his body was flexible and he tore off the tape without much effort.

“…Lu Hua?” Chang Qing called out softly.

Lu Hua’s shoulders trembled, but she didn’t say a word.

Chang Qing was silent for a long time before he asked, “Did you hear that?”

She must have heard it. She was already awake. How could Lu Hua keep sleeping all the time? Qin Lang timed it so accurately that he probably knew that Lu Hua would wake up at this time.

He told it to Lu Hua on purpose.

Chang Qing was angry about this, but he couldn’t be irrational at this time. He comforted her softly: “Don’t be afraid, your second brother will come to save us.”

Lu Hua’s sobbing became louder and louder.

Chang Qing could only say weakly: “Don’t cry, Lu Hua. Don’t cry. You can’t cry now.”

Lu Hua sobbed and asked, “Are we going to die?”

Chang Qing was silent.

Lu Hua cried and said, “I’m sorry, it’s all my fault.”

Chang Qing looked down at her in surprise. She wriggled and sat up, pale and dejected. Her tears kept falling. This time she seemed to be really sad, so her tears fell freely, almost in a continuous stream.

She bent her knees and buried her face in her knees, “It’s all my fault, I didn’t listen to you.” There was a bit of remorse and weakness in her voice.

She probably didn’t know what else to say, so she could only keep repeating this sentence.

Chang Qing was firmly tied up and didn’t have a hand free to reach out to her.  He could only tell her, “It’s not your fault. Who would have thought he would do such a thing?”

Lu Hua didn’t speak. Right now maybe only crying will make her feel better.

“Don’t cry, Lu Hua, we have to find a way to escape.” Chang Qing thought for a while and had to speak to Lu Hua.

When Qin Lang said those words, the look on his face revealed enough information to make Chang Qing’s hair stand on end. It seemed that he had never thought of letting them go back.

If Lu Zheng comes… will he also?

Chang Qing didn’t dare to think about it. After thinking about it again and again, he decided to tell Lu Hua the seriousness of the matter. “Don’t cry. You heard him. Qin Lang hates your Lu family, you and your second brother. We’re here. Your second brother is very passive, so we have to run.”

Lu Hua looked up. She wiped her face with her arm, and asked, “How do we run away?”

Chang Qing didn’t know either, but people always came up with ways. He looked around. There was only a circle of wooden barrels behind them, there wasn’t anything else.

At this moment, a vague thought hit his heart like lightning. He opened his eyes wide and his breathing became short. He endured it and told Lu Hua in a calm voice: “Listen, Jenny and the makeup artist are probably outside. I heard their voices.”

Lu Hua looked at him blankly. Chang Qing lowered his voice and said, “Qin Lang wants to kill us, but they probably don’t know that.”

The makeup artist and Jenny’s magnanimous posture seemed to indicate that they really thought it was all just a play. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have appeared in Nanzhao, which was covered in cameras.

They have always wanted Lu Hua to cooperate, so the swaggering in Nanzhao speaks for itself. As long as Lu Hua is on their side, the suspicion of kidnapping Lu Hua will disappear.

Put this way, the makeup artist and Jenny could just barely be considered their teammates.

Chang Qing whispered to Lu Hua, “You pretend to have a stomachache to lure them in.”

Lu Hua was at a loss, “That’s it?”

Chang Qing took a deep breath, “Pretend to have a stomachache. And then cry a lot, will you?”

Lu Hua said, “But I’m wearing a black dress…”

Chang Qing paused, not sure what the connection between what he said and what she said was. He looked down and saw Lu Hua’s faltering expression, when good luck come, one has good ideas:1 “…they won’t check it out, you make trouble first.”

Lu Hua nodded heavily, but trembled again. Her eyes were full of fear, “What if that Qin Lang comes?”

She hadn’t really faced Qin Lang yet, but she was already afraid of him.

Chang Qing was also afraid of Qin Lang. Reading about something in a book was completely different from the feeling of really facing a villain. He had faced Qin Lang directly and now had a deeper understanding of this person’s madness and viciousness-this wasn’t a normal person at all.

Not being a normal person means having more uncertainty, it was impossible to predict his behavior. The unknown is scary so Chang Qing is afraid of Qin Lang.

But this useless fear will only make him like a lamb intimidated by the wolf that has been cowering in the sheep pen. Shrinking back in fear, but what awaits him may be the wolf’s strangulation.

Chang Qing calmed down and said in a relaxed tone, “Don’t be afraid. He won’t do anything to us now.”

Lu Hua took a breath and nodded.

In fact, her acting skills were superb. Just like how she could always cry very emotionally to win the love and affection of her brothers in order to achieve her own goals.  With the exception of Lu Zheng who it never worked on, for her other brothers it was a tried-and-true method and had never failed.

She always felt that she was good-looking and had good acting skills. In the future, she might even be the best actress of her generation. However, the rich families always had a slight prejudice against celebrities. Even she was the same, so she only thought that she really wanted to be a star and act. She still feels aggrieved.

But now wasn’t the time to think about this, Lu Hua has already entered the role setting. She reached out helplessly, held her stomach, and howled in pain.

Although she was tall, at 162 cm, her limbs were still slim, and even her voice was closer to a child’s voice. When she spoke softly, her soft voice seemed somewhat gentle and cute. But when she spoke loudly, her voice was so sharp, that she could almost punctures people’s eardrums.

Chang Qing also made a concerned and anxious expression.

Lu Hua screamed: “My stomach hurts!! I want to drink brown sugar water and painkillers. It’s all your fault. My stomach hurts so much!”

Her acting skills are just right, neither exaggerated nor weak. This manner showed a certain degree of skill.

Chang Qing couldn’t help giving a sigh of relief when he saw it. Compared with her performance, he was really a little dull.

Fortunately, her trick worked, and sure enough, the door was opened, but it wasn’t Jenny or the makeup artist, but a big man in a tank top who shouted gruffly, “What are you shouting about?”

Chang Qing immediately told him: “She has a stomachache! Do you think you can give her some painkillers or brown sugar water?”

The big man said, “You guys are full of shit! What brown sugar water pain reliever? Do you think you’re here for a vacation?”

After speaking, the big man went to close the door but he didn’t expect Lu Hua to exert all her strength and scream, “My stomach hurts!! Ahhhhhhhhh!

Her voice was so harsh that the man angrily took a few steps forward, then stopped and said in a rough voice: “Shut up! I’ll make you some sugar water!”

Then he slammed the door and went out.

Chang Qing breathed a sigh of relief. He turned to look at Lu Hua, and saw that she was still in tears. Her face was crumpled into a ball, and she looked like she was in unbearable pain. A sense of respect arose involuntarily.

The sound insulation of the place where they were located wasn’t very good. Chang Qing heard the inquiring voice of a woman outside and the voice of the big man answering gruffly. Soon, the door opened and it was the makeup artist. She came over with a cup of sugar water in her hand and brought a blanket. She looked around, and then her eyes fell on Lu Hua, “Did your aunt arrive?”2

Lu Hua said angrily: “It’s all your fault. If I die of pain, my second brother won’t let you go. ”

Chang Qing was really relieved when he saw the makeup artist coming in. He’d just been giving it a shot.

The makeup artist closed the door and said apologetically, “I’m sorry. I didn’t know your period would come at this time.”

Perhaps Lu Hua’s acting skills were too realistic. The makeup artist really didn’t suspect that she was pretending.

She helped Lu Hua up, fed her some brown sugar water, put a blanket over her, and said softly, “We don’t have menstrual supplies here. So please bear with it first.”

Chang Qing asked her, “You participated in the kidnapping. Aren’t you afraid of Lu Zheng taking revenge against you?”

The makeup artist blinked and said, “As long as Lu Zheng and Qin Lang solve their misunderstandings and start over, our mistakes will naturally disappear.”

She lowered her voice again and said, “There are two groups of people outside. One group is the real outlaws. Qin Lang’s agent found them. They really want money. The other group is our people.. You’ll be fine. They asked for a ransom of 40 million. Even if they really want money, they won’t hurt you.”

Chang Qing figured it out,”… you don’t believe this is just an act, right?”

The makeup artist paused and said, “Qin Lang really likes Lu Zheng. He’s not a money lover, so you’ll be fine.”

She emphasized it again and again, but it didn’t sound very believable, because her tone was more like she was persuading herself to believe it.

She’d probably stayed inside for too long, because someone knocked on the door. With a sense of urgency the makeup artist said, “I’m coming out now.”

After the knocker walked away, Chang Qing said, “The one who took care of Qin Lang wasn’t Lu Zheng, but me.”

The makeup artist was stunned.

Chang Qing said, “You’ve all been deceived. I’m the one who kept Qin Lang. Qin Lang dared to kidnap me and Lu Hua. He just wanted to lure Lu Zheng over and kill him.”

Even Lu Hua, who was pretending to be in pain next to him, opened her eyes wide.

Chang Qing said, “Think about it carefully. If he just wanted to heroically save the damsel in distress and gain a sense of existence in front of Lu Zheng, why would he do it in such a dangerous way? Lu Zheng already suspected him, and he still got involved with Lu Hua. It would only make Lu Zheng more suspicious. Kidnapping Lu Hua is too risky, and the gains outweigh the losses. If it fails then it would not be as simple as being banned for Qin Lang.”

“As long as one of us dies, you’ll be an accomplice. You might even end up in jail. At your age you’re still so easily deceived. Have you thought about your life in the future?”

A complicated expression appeared on the makeup artist’s face. She whispered, “What kind of life can I have? Qin Lang is very kind to Jenny and I. He often introduces me to clients. Only when he is good can we be good.”

She paused and couldn’t help but pour out, “Mr. Chang, you don’t know. Jenny and I both have millions in debt. We aren’t bad people. Qin Lang was good to us. We all remember it in our hearts. Now that Qin Lang has been banned, we must also stand up to help.”

She also knew that this plan was full of flaws. When she saw those desperadoes who seemed to have really seen blood, she was more and more shaken. However, at this point, she could only trust Qin Lang.

“Mr. Chang, you’ll be fine. I promise.” The makeup artist assured Chang Qing.

Chang Qing scoffed at this.

The makeup artist stood up and was about to leave. Lu Hua moaned, “You pull my rope off. It hurts!”

The makeup artist hesitated, then cut the rope off Lu Hua’s body with a knife, “Have a good rest. I’ll come and bring you food later.”

Chang Qing asked, “Where are we now?”

The makeup artist paused then replied, “We’re on Mount Ge.”

Chang Qing lowered his eyes and said, “Unexpectedly, we’re so far away.”

The makeup artist didn’t speak. She turned and left.

1.福至心灵 -to bless the soul- this is an idiom which means that when a blessing comes, people’s minds become dexterious or when you’re lucky you get good ideas

2. Aunt is referring to her period. Which after some research seems to be a common way to refer to it by more than one culture- but just in case…
