Chapter 5: Traveling Companions

“I thought my head was going to fly off…” (Little Girl)

“Sorry sorry.” (Jade)

When I ran at my usual pace, she screamed and then passed out.

If possible, I want to hurry home but if I go home at my usual pace, then she might actually die before we reach the capital.

In the end, we stopped by a nearby city and spent the night there. I also got her some proper clothes while we were there and we boarded the train as soon as dawn broke.

As far as I know, trains that are powered by magic stones are the fastest means of transportation. Of course, running was faster but we were still able to return to the capital by the afternoon.

“Welcome back, Jade-san!”

“Thank you for your hard work! Huh? Who is this little girl?”

“She’s my relative. I heard that she was interested in the capital so I brought her here.” (Jade)

If we reveal that she’s a dragon here, everyone will definitely panic.

Even if she’s a white dragon, everyone will still be scared.

“Oooh! So you’re Jade-san’s relative!”

“No wonder you have such a dignified appearance!”

“We’re looking forward to your future!”

“The royal capital… It’s a pretty nice place.” (Little Girl)

She was praised as soon as she arrived. She had a sheepish smile on her face, evidently in a good mood.

“This way.” (Jade)

I took her hand and led her out of the train station then we walked along the main street.

We reached the royal castle.

I didn’t inform anyone in advance but the king told me I can come at any time.

I asked the guards to tell the king that I wanted to have an audience so they guided us inside for the time being.

“…” (Little Girl)

She’s being very quiet. She hasn’t uttered a single word since we entered the castle.

Is it no good? Her fate will be decided soon.

So that she can live in peace, she must appeal that she isn’t dangerous.

“I’ve kept you waiting.” (King)

The king has arrived.

I bow my head to the cheerful-looking king.

“I apologize for taking some time out of your busy schedule. There’s actually something I would like to discuss with you…” (Jade)

“Don’t be so formal. That’s not the relationship between us, isn’t it? Also, I already know what you want to ask.” (King)

“Really?” (Jade)

“Yes, you’ve finally made up your mind to become my successor and lead the nation, aren’t you?” (King)

Uwaa. What do I do? That’s completely wrong.

“No, that’s not actually…” (Jade)

“That’s a pity. If it’s the strong, kind, and selfless Jade, he’ll definitely be able to guide everyone in the right direction.” (King)

“Being an adventurer just suits me…” (Jade)

“I see. Just tell me if you change your mind. But, if you’re not talking about being my heir, what do you want?” (King)

“The truth is, I found a white dragon that can transform into a human so I brought her to the castle. She’s the dragon.” (Jade)

“N-nice to meet you. I’m the white dragon that’s completely harmless to humans and animals… I can also change my own clothes and eat by myself so I’m a clever person who doesn’t need any help…” (Little Girl)

While trembling with her small frame, she lowers her head and appeals to the king.

It’s normally insane to bring back a monster to the castle but it’s a different story with white dragons. Moreover, it’s a very humble one.

The king was surprised but didn’t call the guards.

“Very well. Our country is indebted to both Jade and the white dragons so if it’s his recommendation, there shouldn’t be any problems.” (King)

However, the king kept his eye on her.

“There’s just one condition. Jade will have to take care of the dragon.” (King)

“Take care of it, huh…” (Jade)

It’s not as if I didn’t expect that I would be entrusted with taking care of the dragon.

He didn’t want a dragon just roaming around the castle. Even more so because he had been recently blessed with a child.

It would be bad if something happened to the newborn princess so he wants her to spend her time outside the castle. However, he can’t just leave her unattended.

That’s why she’s being put under my supervision.

However…

It’d be one thing if I just let her live in my house but to supervise her too is a bit…

It takes time to move around like today so I’d have less time to go to the guild.

But—

“Please Jade… Please nod your head…” (Little Girl)

It’s not like I can refuse the request of a crying little girl. If I abandon her here, I’ll also feel guilty and have trouble falling asleep.

Also… I’m sure that Garnet-san would like a man who takes care of a child more than one who abandons them.

“Alright. I will take responsibility and take care of her.” (Jade)

“Then it’s all good!” (King)

Once the talks were over, we left the audience room. After that, we left the castle.

“I thank you for helping me! I will spend the rest of my life repaying this debt!” (Little Girl)

“It’s fine. More importantly, what should I call you?” (Jade)

“It’s fine for Jade to call me whatever he wants to call me!” (Little Girl)

“If that’s the case then Dorami is fine.” (Jade)

“Why do I feel like I’ve just been assigned a name so arbitrarily? But I guess it’s fine!” (Dorami)

She seems happy to have secured food, clothing, and shelter.

I head to the guild with Dorami who seems to be in a good mood.

I made her wait outside and headed to the 18th counter as usual.

After enjoying the moment that lasted less than a minute, I accepted the quest and headed to the next scene with Dorami.
