7 Shadow lurking

During these past three years, the help that Liu Sheng Xiao had given to Jiao Yu gave her a second chance to lead a life she could never ask for.

She once wished to the heavens that if she got a chance to have a rebirth she would want to be reborn as a daughter from a noble family but unfortunately, she would never be able to become someone she was not. Even after taking the identity of Liu Sheng Xiao's deceased daughter.

According to what the servants told her, Liu Sheng Xiao's daughter had a very weak body due to an illness she developed when she was still an infant and because of that she could not go out to go

and play with the other young misses from a noble family and fearing that something might happen to her outside of the count's courtyard, Liu Sheng Xiao's daughter was forbidden to go out even during the times where she should've gone to banquet's, festivals, and even with the royal family's invitation, making the daughter of Liu Sheng Xiao the most mysterious and unknown person in Ding capital.

But who would've thought that even after taking precautions and forbidding her from going outside, the daughter of the count of Wen Yi drowned in the pond on his own courtyard, never was seen and never to be seen.

And because of frustrations, regret and embarrassment, Liu Sheng Xiao wasted his life after his only daughter's death, he wished that he could turn back the time and let his daughter have whatever she wants and let her go out and play. At first, Jiao Yu didn't agree to the condition that Liu Sheng Xiao which was to take and live the identity of his daughter but after knowing what kind of people is in Jing capital, it was her luck and misfortune she could be Liu Sheng Xiao's daughter after all adopted children are not to be treated with respect and people from the noble family would always scorn at them while being the sick young miss of Liu family will give her restriction towards her actions and Jiao Yu needed to pretend the 'sick' and 'weak' miss, which she was not able to act during the incident today.

She just hoped that no one was able to detect her actions and as for Fan Zi Yi, though she is very amiable and loves to play, she at least have a redeeming quality to always keep secrets.

When Jiao Yu finished taking a bath and changed clothes, she went directly to Liu Sheng Xiao's study and there she found an elderly man wearing an official's uniform with his hair pulled up with a jade buckle.

"Where have you been?" Liu Sheng Xiao folded the scroll on his hand and put them on the table. "And please don't say you were in Xia Renmin because I already went there but you were never there."

Jiao Yu was slightly surprised to know that he went there and felt the tension in the air but only said, "What happened?"

Liu Sheng Xiao sighed and go around the table to hold Jiao Yu's hands, "The plan failed and we've gained a lot of loss this time."

Ah, the plan... Jiao Yu almost completely forgot it, it was two years ago when she found out Liu Sheng Xiao was working under someone and it was not the person who is seating on the dragon seat but someone else. Unfortunately, she got involved with it and left with no choice, she became a part of the organization they created.

The organization was created in secret and only a few who were involved in it knew about the organization, the court, royal family or the emperor did not know the organization existed under their noses.

Liu Sheng Xiao explained to her that the organization was not a simple organization with a common goal, the organization, consisting of assassins, thieves, hunters, peasant, soldiers, and officials who have different reasons, beliefs and have their own goals in joining the organization. No one restricted them of doing what they wanted but only if they have tasks ordered by the higher-ups then that's the time they need to do their everything to succeed it. There should be no failure and loss to report.

"What did the higher-ups said?" Having her hand held in Liu Sheng Xiao's hand made Jiao Yu's feelings on edge.

"They said, 'Let Tiger do it."

...

Cold winds suddenly rose in the darkness of the night, making every noise seemed eerie as the roads of the city was empty with no people loitering around because it was the time of curfew.

A shadow lurked inside a closed residence. Moving around corners and turns before standing in front of a red cinnabar door and beside it was a sleeping maid with a round face and a wide figure. The shadow slowly opened the door before closing it again, walking its way towards the room, it paused in front of a bed with one person sleeping tightly on it.

Jiao Yu stood still before the one sleeping figure on the bed, clad in all back with veil still covering her face and two small daggers protruding from her fingers. Gathering courage and erasing every hesitations within her, she gently moved towards the bed and with extended arms she covered the mouth of the person and thrust one of the dagger to the heart and the other swipe it around the neck. She did all of that with closed eyes, she did not want to see the person's face, especially the eyes as it tries to grab onto life, she knew how it felt as she'd almost died before.

This time the mission had succeeded, killing one of the target's son. Other than the psychological attack, it was rather an easy job for Jiao Yu, no complications, no sneak attack, and no back ups, not like how it was on her first time.

The first time she did this was two years ago, three months after she got involved with the organization and became a part of it. She remembered the first time she killed someone, the person begged for help and forgiveness, begging her to let them go and she almost hesitated, almost resulting to failure but in that instance of hesitation the person strikes back and she almost lost her eyes because of that, then as if she was possessed she ruthlessly stabbed the person to death. The eyes of her victims were the thing she hated the most because it makes her hesitate, doubt, and sometimes it stimulate her.

It was also the same for her second time, she hesitated and the person called people to rescue him, Jiao Yu felt restless that time not knowing what she should do. Even if she knew how to fight now that she was trained, it was still not enough against a man's strength and number. Fortunately, when she was about to get in trouble, Liu Sheng Xiao took precautionary measure and brought his men to back her up whenever and wherever she goes.

Blood sprayed on her along with the sheets and quilt of the bed. Once done, Jiao Yu went to the doors and just like how she entered, she exited without anyone knowing.

Her shadow blended with the darkness.

Arriving at the entrance of her own courtyard, a man with a stern manner welcomed her, Jiao Yu was a little bit curious how he was able to recruit such a person like Tie Yi to be his right-hand man, "Young lady, the master sent this lowly servant to see if the young lady had arrived safe and uninjured."

"Tell the Minister that I'm fine and there's no need for him to worry, you can go back now." Jiao Yu said indifferently as she passed by him and went inside her courtyard.

After closing her door and hearing the stern-face Tie Yi walk away, Jiao Yu felt all of her energy drained and sat limply on the floor. Her room was unlit and warm but after all the things happened she felt that the winter has gotten even colder.

The reason Jiao Yu did all of this was not because she wanted money or power from the organization but because Liu Sheng Xiao was supposed to be the one doing this but because of his age and weak body, he could not do it and the higher ups don't need failures, that is why he became a target of assassinations.

And because Jiao Yu doesn't know how to thank him enough for what he'd done for her, she volunteered to be a part of it to save the only person who at least tried to show real emotions to her and made her feel that there's still a second chance in her life.

Jiao Yu was having a breakdown in her room, her tears flowing down her cheeks and her body shook as she tries to keep her sanity and emotions intact. Her heart was beating so fast and her breathing was hard to stabilize,Jiao Yu covered her mouth from producing any noise as to not wake up the sleeping Jing Chu. It was not an easy thing to be an assassin, hunter or a murderer, it was also not that enjoying as people may think it is. Everything has a background story to everything as such to the people in line with this type of work.

After calming herself and stopped the tears in her eyes, she changed into new pair of clothes and light the strong sleeping incense, then she went to her bed.

She lost a lot of things in her life and she's scared that she'll also lose her sanity and morality.

But at least she have gained two things that will haunt her from sleep now, first her past and second the light on the eyes of her targets she'd eliminated.
