Chapter 30

Chapter 30

Translator: Yonnee

‘I’m glad I didn’t lose all my jewelry to Charlotte.’

Along with her two records of falling for investment scams, Roella suffered massive losses. Apart from that, she didn’t have much jewelry left.

Of course, compared to normal people, she still had quite a lot of jewelry (that’s why Charlotte’s eyes got turned upside down like that), but the jewelry in my possession now was only about half of what Roella once had.

And for that reason, I had to think wisely about how and when I’d have to distribute and sell these.

As something of a taste test, I brought with me only five today.

While I was thinking, the carriage eventually arrived at the shopping district.

“Let me off here.”

I was looking out the carriage window when I saw a small jewelry shop along the street. I immediately called for the carriage to stop.

“Are you sure that you will be going there by yourself, Milady?”

Watching as I put on my hood before getting out of the carriage, Jane asked anxiously.

In any case, I replied with a nonchalant smile.

“Yep. What kind of good deed would it be if I made someone else do it for me? I have to take responsibility for my own actions.”

Honestly, I’m just thinking about what will happen later when I’d finally be kicked out. I’d rather check out the store where stolen goods could be traded as a preemptive measure—but that’s a fact that I couldn’t really say here, so I just roughly came up with a cover story.

Jane interpreted it the way she did, looking at me with tears in her eyes.

‘Mm-hm. I’m used to it now.’

Trying to ignore the faint gaze lingering on my back, I headed towards the jewelry shop I caught sight of from afar.

Clang—!

“Welcome.”

As brightly as the bell, the shop owner with a long mustache greeted me with a cheerful tone.

I looked around carefully and nodded to myself.

‘It’s small, but fancy-looking inside.’

Just as much as this shop was supposedly dealing with valuable items, there’s a certain ambiance to it that made it seem like the shop was trying to look luxurious.

Contrary to those efforts, however, that just made the shop look cheaper.

Because all the items here were imitations.

Ah, I’m losing confidence in this shop all of a sudden.

“Are you looking for anything particular?”

“No, I’d like to sell some jewelry.”

“Oh. You’re going to sell some.”

As soon as he realized that I’m not here to buy, the shop owner’s cheery voice dropped sharply.

His displeasure was palpable when I nodded instead of answering verbally. He then took out a monocle and a pair of gloves.

“Give it here.”

Well, look at this guy.

Unlike his first greeting, he no longer spoke with a respectful tone.

At the end of the day, someone dealing with trade should always keep their business smiles on them, and they had to be equal to their customers for them to succeed.

“Are we acquainted enough for you to speak informally to me?”

“What?”

“Whatever. I’m not good at keeping up pretenses either way. Here.”

Unconsciously, I was about to spout a few colorful words myself, but I laboriously held it in and stopped myself from saying them.

Instead, I followed his example and started talking informally as well.

Since the other guy started already, wasn’t it only right for me to reciprocate?

The shop owner stared at me as if he wasn’t too pleased about it, but he didn’t bother to refute me.

He soon took the jewelry out of the pouch and examined them.

‘How much will he pay?’

With anticipation, I waited for the shop owner’s verdict.

“One million shillings.”

Hearing the price, I stared down at the shop owner with wide eyes.

“One million shillings?”

“O…One million and one hundred thousand shillings?”

I was so surprised that I asked back immediately, my voice going up sharply, but the shop owner timidly raised the price right then.

There was a hood over my head right now, and the momentary eye contact must have intimidated him.

With a neutral expression, it could be said that Roella had a gentle-looking face. But it’s when she would open her eyes wide that she looked like a true villainess.

I coughed and pulled down the hood deeper.

However, unlike my seemingly calm demeanor, my thoughts were going around noisily in my head.

‘1 million. No, 1.1 million shillings. That’s equivalent to 1.1 million won in my previous life.’

I didn’t even choose anything special, just a piece of jewelry that looked good enough to sell—but the price I got for it was this much, even when it’s a used item.

‘Roella… You really didn’t know any limits, huh.’

Calming myself down first, I cleared my voice before speaking.

“I’ve got more jewelry besides that, so can you pay for them all at once?”

The shop owner smiled and reverted back to his previous respectful tone.

“Of course. All that jewelry, I’ll help you out with disposing them, Ma’am.”

* * *

‘However, valuable jewelry like yours would be difficult for a small shop such as mine to handle. There’s another jewelry store that I know well, so I’ll introduce you to them. You’ll find great deals there.’

And so, the shop owner led me to another shop to help me out with selling the jewelry that I brought all in one go.

I followed the man without thinking deeply about it.

I also thought that the small shop wouldn’t be able to handle all my jewelry anyway, so I followed the man without any doubts forming in my mind.

Throughout our walk to the other shop, the owner kept telling me lame puns.

“Orange you glad that the weather’s fine today? Hahaha.”

“Ah, sure.”

Answering soullessly to his joke like that, I went on to focus only on walking. It was then that we soon stepped into a dark alley.

t/n: His pun was actually ‘It’s been such a long time since I last ate an orange’ because the word for ‘a long time’ in Korean is close to ‘orange’, but it wouldn’t be a pun anymore if I translated it that way lol
