Chapter 30.1 – She Was Just a Little Sour (1)

The date during rest day was very fun, but happy times always passed by quickly, and soon rest day was over.

Qi Yang had started going to Xuanshi Hall again recently. Because of her last bit of self-restraint, she didn’t directly urge the Emperor to decree her marriage, and after all it would be annoying if she mentioned it too much.

But with her always showing up in front of him, how could the Emperor not understand what his daughter was thinking?

He sighed inside that “daughters will leave home one day”, but the Emperor really did not intend to give the marriage decree too soon. It was true that he doted on her, but it was precisely because of this that he should pay more attention towards her Prince Consort, so he wouldn’t entrust her to the wrong person.

But Lu Qipei had only been in Hanlin Academy for a short time, and she didn’t have the dazzling aura of the number one scholar like in her previous life, so the Emperor would naturally wait a bit longer.

After several trips to Xuanshi Hall, Qi Yang also realized that she couldn’t criticize the Emperor’s decision. She couldn’t help but regret a little – if she hadn’t brought Lu Qipei back to the palace that day, would the latter have entered the examination hall under Lu Qicheng’s identity like their previous life, then win the first place?

You should know that in her previous life, her father was really glad to give the first place champion her hand in marriage!

But it was too late to say anything now, and Qi Yang couldn’t help but feel a bit resentful. In addition, she had gone out of the palace too many times recently. After the Emperor mentioned it once, she could no longer enter and exit the palace so nonchalantly. So, she settled down for the following days.

But not meeting in person didn’t mean they would stop keeping in contact. Especially for these two people who had just exchanged their feelings with each other – how could they stand the loneliness? So the spies Qi Yang had outside the palace turned into messengers, and they would deliver letters and objects in and out the palace every couple of days.

Sometimes it was a letter, sometimes it was a flower and sometimes it was a small gift that Lu Qipei personally made…

When Qi Yang received two new boxes of incense from Lu Qipei, she also learned a piece of news about that Lu Qicheng that she hated so much. It seemed that without waiting for her to make a move, someone else already considered him a sore in their eyes.

He fell into lethargy for no reason. The time he could stay awake everyday kept decreasing, but all the famous doctors invited to check him were helpless. They didn’t even diagnose anything wrong with his body! Under these circumstances, there were only two possible explanations. Either Lu Qicheng suddenly contracted some strange and unknown disease, or he was secretly attacked by someone with very hidden means.

Qi Yang thought that it was the latter. She was born in the court; no matter how naïve she looked on the surface, the number of shady things she had seen was something an ordinary person could never compare to. So, she didn’t believe in such coincidence!

Moreover, Lu Qicheng was so annoying, so he must have offended a lot of people!

Qi Yang had a brief moment of schadenfreude, but didn’t take the matter to heart. After sending some people to verify the situation, she started playing with the new gifts she just received. Of the two boxes of incense she received, one was a fresh and elegant new incense Lu Qipei mixed, and the other was her personal plum blossom incense.

Qi Yang held the plum blossom incense happily, and turned around to tell Zhi Ting to use it on all her beddings.

The Zhi Ting who received her instructions looked a little speechless. She wanted to remind Her Highness to be more reserved, but finally swallowed what she wanted to say… Forget it, no one else knew about it anyways, let’s just use it like it was an ordinary incense stick.

That night, Qi Yang laid on the bed full of plum blossom fragrance like she wanted, and the faint scent of the flowers enveloped her. The only regretful thing was that this same stick of incense seemed to be missing something without that person here, making her feel a bit frustrated

When she heard the report from the hidden guard the next day, her frustration turned into indescribable words.

A small piece of soothing incense was placed on Qi Yang’s desk, and it was unnecessary to say where it came from. The most amazing thing was that this soothing incense was exactly the same as the one Lu Qicheng had been using before – it was made by the same person, and even the best incense makers might not be able to tell the difference.

When someone was used to something, it was easy to ignore it, and Lu Qicheng had been using Lu Qipei’s incense for five years!

He had been using incense everyday, and the smell was also the same. Who would notice when it quietly burned at the corner of the house?

It was a really simple and direct method, but it was quite effective.

Qi Yang was surprised and confused, but she didn’t think that Lu Qipei was being heartless.

At most, Qi Yang was just… a little sour.

Although she knew it was unreasonable to feel jealous about such a serious matter, Qi Yang still couldn’t help thinking when she learned the truth. Was the box of incense that she almost took as a token of love just something that the other party made on the side!?

It was more frustrating since the facts showed that the box of incense was most likely indeed just a gift that Lu Qipei prepared on the side – after all, Lu Qipei never intended to use it to confess her feelings. Her main motivation was obviously to take revenge on the wicked Lu Qicheng.

In the end, the revenge was very successful, and their relationship also progressed smoothly, but Her Royal Highness The Princess was left a little depressed after finding it out.

Translator notes:

A little talk about the terms I’ve used for the translation: Qi Yang doesn’t have an official residence outside the palace yet (which would be her princess’s mansion), so instead she has an ‘alternate/other’ courtyard. Most mentions of Qi Yang’s courtyard called it with the full term ‘alternate/other’ courtyard, but it’s obviously rather awkward/a mouthful to call it that everytime, so I mostly translated it simply as her courtyard.

’Rest day’ is basically a holiday, but it uses a specific term used for a court official’s holiday. The literal meaning is a day to rest and bathe.
