Rising Against the Wind (3)

Class 9 on the first day didn’t have any logistics and everyone cheered for them. There was one more possibility that the participation rate for their class was very high and that everyone in their class had participated in the sports events.

It wasn’t important that they didn’t rank in any of the competitions. The important thing was they would obtain the 0.5 basic points as long as everyone from their class participated.

He and Fu Songhua were in Class 1, so everyone had their guard down and the participation rate was lower. If more than thirty out of the forty students in Class 9 participated, they would obtain a dozen more basic points than other classes.

A dozen more points weren’t very little!

The referee teacher’s voice sounded out at that moment, “Okay, all athletes, get ready.”

A dozen more competing sophomore-year boys stood on the track and uniformly dashed out with the first sound of the starting gun!

“Go Class monitor, ahhh!” Class 1’s students cheered.

“Ruan-ge, run faster. Leave behind all those weak chickens!” Bai Jing and the others madly shouted.

There wasn’t any preliminary round in the 1500 meters. All the athletes ran like a swarm of bees, and due to the large numbers, they squeezed together as one mass of bodies.

But they were only muddling along together in the first several hundred meters and the gap increased soon. Only two people clung together tightly without yielding to each other in the frontmost group.

“Fuck, they’re both so fast!”

“Just incredible, ah! Class 1’s top student Qin and Class’s sports representative are going against each other again?”

“Fuck. That is Qin Yuan, the champion of both long-distance categories last year!”

“Ah, where is Bai Xiaosheng? Let’s open a bet, ah. This Grandma will bet on soft balsa wood* to win! I want to win over everything I lost betting on him before!”

*T/N: Ruan Qingmu

“Has this rotten gambling addict gone crazy? Although his life is hanging this year, his opponent this time is Qin Yuan!”

“Gambling is all about betting on small probability events… Damn, the odds aren’t right, are they?”

A betting thread popped up on the school forum just a few moments later and it was shockingly posted by Bai Xiaosheng, which was not unusual in itself. The unusual thing was that the odds given for both sides were equally matched this time!

The boy hooting for a bet was dumbstruck. “Hell, there are so many bets on Ruan Qingmu? How can I still bet on a small amount?”

The student beside him disdainfully looked at him. “Was your brain caught in the door?* Ruan Qingmu won against Lin Hua yesterday. He’s the big dark horse, okay?”

*T/N: Saying something stupid

That boy hesitated for a while. “Then, I better bet on Qin Yuan. Nobody could be good at both sprinting and long-distance running, right?”

“It looks like Boss Qin has good endurance.”

***

Ruan Qingmu moved both of his legs consistently and barely led ahead, running in front of Qin Yuan.

September’s weather still had a little of a hot spell. Although the sunshine at three o’clock in the afternoon wasn’t so fierce, it could still ignite sparks when it shone on the race track.

On the second lap, the two people had already left the second group behind them by a large margin, black and white figures advancing together, two pairs of long legs running like the wind as beautiful as any landscape scenery.

After the 800 meters lap had passed, the two people madly dashed at full speed, not wanting to wait for the opponent to counterattack.

There was a vague awareness in their minds: they couldn’t afford to hold back at the start against this person. Once there was a distance gap, there might be no hope of turning the tables later.

There were 500 meters left, then 400 meters.

… 200 meters.

The two people sprinted very fast, without scientifically distributing their strength between the first and middle sections and with barely any noticeable reduction in speed. Nearing the finish line, they had even started to accelerate simultaneously.

The referee teacher at the finish line looked down at the timer and was shocked: the result of this year’s 1500 meters had broken the school’s record. Moreover, it was not as simple as improving by a few seconds.

The red ribbon was tightly stretched at the far distance up ahead. With a few dozen meters left, Ruan Qingmu glanced at Qin Yuan from out of the corner of his eyes.

That swaying, handsome face was already covered in sweat, just like him. The moment Ruan Qingmu looked over, Qin Yuan, the boy as if in tacit understanding, similarly tilted his face slightly and glanced at him.

After that, Qin Yuan suddenly took a large breath.

When Ruan Qingmu saw him taking a deep breath, an alarm bell erupted in his heart.

It was coming! Almost without any pause, he had also gathered all of his strength and started the last sprint.

To his side, Qin Yuan’s shadow was like lightning, closing the distance instantly by one length behind.

This obvious acceleration of the two runners immediately ignited the onlookers’ mood, increasing the loudness of the cheering.

“Ahhh! Go, Ruan-ge, go!”

“Boss, run faster. Surpass him!”

… Behind the crowd, Lin Hua stood on the finishing line and stealthily bent his waist.

He pretended to tie his shoelace while staring at the sprinting Ruan Qingmu. Suddenly, an unopened aluminum cola can fell from his hand.

No one noticed him amidst the earth-shattering clamor. The beverage can rolled under the crowd’s feet to the racetrack and slid in the direction of Ruan Qingmu’s feet!
