8 Arrival at the Vampire Kingdom

I think I've walked for a whole day, unfortunately there's no way of knowing for sure, since you're always here at night. After a long walk I can finally see big walls, as well as a big castle behind it, was a little far away, I think I found the vampire kingdom.

As I got closer, I could see the entrance, a big bow on a wall, two guards with full armour closed the passage, they didn't seem to be vampires, I felt that their smell was different. My sense of smell seemed even sharper, so I start to salivate a little by looking at them, humans.

I approach with caution, they both wore spears.

"Identify yourself." The one on the right speaks.

They both lower their spears and point them at me.

"I'd love to talk, but I don't have a name yet." I feel like I've said that before.

The two of them stand completely still as I speak, not a single muscle moves, it was like I was seeing robots. What I had spoken follows into the walls, while the other continues with his spear pointed at me. I'll just stand there for a few minutes until Chloe shows up with the other guard.

"You got here faster than usual, just like Lucio said you would." Chloe speaks by passing through the guard who still had the spear pointed at me, as soon as he passes he breaks his guard and raises his spear again. "But I don't think even he expected that speed."

She gives me a big smile and some pats on the back.

"It turned out to be pretty easy, I didn't have to go after them, since they decided to come to me." I'll answer it.

"What do you mean?" She seemed a little confused.

"I was ambushed, a group of goblins attacked me right after we broke up," I reply.

She makes a surprise face.

"An ambush? I'm glad you made it out of this one alive." Somehow she seemed a little relieved. "But then we'll talk about it, show me your status, I have to be sure about your level."

That again, I'm still not very comfortable, but there's nothing I can do.

"Authorize the status display" I speak.

She looks at my status and keeps quiet for a while, maybe she's been able to see my blessing? I have to avoid showing anyone the status as much as possible.

"You said you were caught in an ambush, right?" Chloe talks about looking at me with a serious look.

"That, they seemed to be waiting for me, the goblin wizard, who we met before, was with them" I answer.

"How many goblins were in the ambush?" She seems to be getting more and more confused.

"I believe it was a dozen," I say, trying to remember for sure.

"Twelve... twelve?! Did you kill them all?" She ended up raising her voice a little, but there was no one else around but the human guards.

Was that so surprising? Yes, they had the numerical advantage, but they didn't have any coordination, so it was pretty easy to fight them.

"Their level was probably too low, I had a bit of a problem at first, as I was taken by surprise, but I managed to turn around." I try to explain. "If they were more coordinated, I would have had problems."

"Even though they're low-level... You still got a title, so you really killed them, somebody could only do that close to level six...". She talks more to herself than she does to me.

I only used some basic strategies, I wonder if vampires are a race that is used to fighting with brute force, it makes sense in this world where status defines who is strong.

"You're no ordinary vampire... But let's put that aside for now, you've reached level two and that's what matters" She starts walking downtown. "Follow me."

I go after her, when I look back I see that the guards just stand there like statues, obviously they are being controlled, I wonder if this is some vampire skill.

Soon after the walls began a small town, we walked down a long street that led to a castle, the streets were paved, I was told by God that this is not very common, the kingdom of vampires was an exception, advanced compared to most cities.

The houses were made of stones and wood, I remember having studied a little about the average age, the houses used to be made of wood, but the nobles' houses were made of stone, something like that, if I'm not mistaken, that showed the great quality of life of vampires.

We walked along the main street, it was quite wide, enough to easily pass several wagons. Several side roads could be seen, these were smaller and narrower, but still with enough space for two or three wagons side by side.

Along the road I noticed something, those closer to the walls were smaller, there seems to be a difference of social classes. The first houses were small and of only one floor, but with time the houses get bigger and bigger.

Although there was nothing special, the scenery was fantastic for someone from another world, it was like being in the middle of medieval stories, like the ambience of a rpg game, but everything there was palpable and not just images seen on a screen.

"Vampires are separated into three classes..." Probably realizing my interest in the difference between the houses she starts to talk. "Nobles, knights and plebs... The nobles are usually the strongest vampires we have, consequently the oldest, since when it comes to strength for us vampires, is directly linked to age, the older the age the greater the time to gain xp, pass the level and train.

She explains to me a bit about social class, nothing much in depth, just talking about how some are more privileged, I think it's funny her clumsy way, sometimes she's the most confused with the explanation.

This makes sense, since in this world the force is linked to the level of the person, but it makes me think of something, does this system not favor races with great longevity? How do those who don't live that long make up for that?

I'll take advantage of that cue, as she commented on nobles...

"Not to intrude, but... Lucio is a nobleman, right?" I talk a little bit tactless, I feel like I'm intruding all the time.

She keeps quiet for a while, I should be keeping my knowledge hidden, but sometimes I end up talking about what's going on in my head.

"Why do you think that?" She speaks by watching me closely.

"The dagger he was carrying seemed to be something very well worked out and this explanation about social classes, one thing led to another" I say while pointing out the difference between the houses.

"You're very attentive, you'll find out anyway..." She lets out a slight sigh.

She was the kind of person who is always smiling, but at that very moment he falls apart, instead there was a serious expression.

"We vampires have the power to transform other races, humans, beasts, everyone can become vampires. There is a difference between the transformed and the original, born of darkness like you, Lucio is a transformed vampire and an ex-noble." She talks like she's exalting that achievement.

According to his explanation, becoming noble must be something extremely difficult, especially when he is someone transformed.

"What do you mean, ex?" I wonder what could demean someone of class.

"It's not common for someone to be demoted, in fact it's something that borders on the impossible, a penalty for an inadmissible crime..." She takes a little break from her speech. "There are only a few crimes without pardon, normally the culprit would be sentenced to death penalty, but as he was a nobleman and his crime was not treason, that was his penalty."

She was dying of curiosity, but it seemed to be painful for her, as if she was about to cry at any moment.

"Transformed vampires are weaker than the originals, we call them first generation and this is something that has always been known, but nothing very absurd, the problem comes when these already transformed try to transform someone, so emerge the second generation vampires, those who are born without prey." She explains.

"And that's forbidden?" I ask.

Is that something like prejudice?

"The vampires of the second generation are different, they drink blood from the moon like their predecessors, but they seem to have no potential, they can evolve only as little as possible, their status does not change even with training or fighting, and they can use sacred magic, this mortal magic to vampires. She gives a weak smile.

Lucio's crime was to turn someone... I remember Chloe's status, now I realize that they are lower than they could be, the human transformed...

The weather was heavy, so I decided to change the subject.

"So, where are we going?" I'll ask you to walk again.

She was quiet and a little lower-headed, but seems to understand my intention and smiles thanking me. If it's so hard to talk, why do you have to? Just don't say it.

"You're right, just follow me, we're on our way to Lucio's house." She talks by taking the lead and walking again.

For an instant I look unconsciously at her mouth, that wide smile was back, she really matches that expression more, but I can also see that she has no fangs.
