14 Chloe's story - The front line

"To think it's been two years." The man next to me says. "Right on your birthday, Chloe."

I look at him.

"Really, I think that's the best gift I've ever gotten," I can't help but say that I can't contain my smile.

Today I'm seventeen years old and I've been an adventurer for two. A person is considered an adult at the age of fifteen, after which they can be registered in the guild.

I'm at a party with my party friends tonight.

"And to think we'd move on to rank D tonight. Let's drink!" Maria screams at your side.

Joe looked at Maria and let out a little sigh. We're both great date friends, we even became adventurers on the same day, although he was kind of that force to become by me, however nowadays he seems to be enjoying it.

Its skin is dark, light brown eyes and dark hair, besides an excellent physique and a meter and eighty high. I have a little crush on him, but that's kind of a secret. We fight in the vanguard together, he's our tank.

"You're gonna end up collapsing fast like this," I say to Maria.

She's my best friend. I wanted to be as beautiful as she is. She is redheaded and has beautiful green eyes like jades, her skin is almost white, freckles spread over her face, which doesn't make her ugly at all. It's a little lower than me, maybe something around a meter and sixty-three, actually the difference between us is pretty small.

She is our priest, she became an adventurer by fleeing from an arranged marriage, yes, a noblewoman.

"I've only known you a short time, but I'm happy to be a part of it," says a low voice behind us.

Kay had arrived.

"Now you're one of us, don't worry about these things" I say delivering a glass to him.

Kay is the newcomer to our group, he joined just over a month ago, as we needed to balance our group more. He's an archer.

Your appearance is not bad either. A little taller than me, light brown hair and eyes just a little darker, has a slender body.

Stopping to think, most of our group looks good.

"A toast to my dear friend Chloe!" Maria screams lifting a mug.

Beer is thrown everywhere.

That night we drank as much as we could.

"It'd be great if this war ended soon, right?" I'm talking about looking at my left side.

There was Mary, the two of us sat in the corner of the bar. We were alone, Kay had passed out from drinking so much, so Joe took him to our room at the inn.

"For what I heard a village far from here came into conflict." Maria was swinging her beer in her cup. "Directly against the vampire kingdom."

"Vampires are really scary," I say with a little chill. "They say they can beat the demons head-on, these two races together is unfair."

We both sigh in unison.

"It is at those times that a hero should be born..." Maria says low. "Besides, the tension between the kingdom and the empire is growing."

On the human continent there are three great forces. The Kingdom, a place rich in magic where great magicians appear, the Empire, a force that rivals the Kingdom itself, even though it does not have a great magical power, all this is due to its soldiers, there are also the Coalition, but they have distant relations with the other two.

Maybe if Kingdom and Empire joined together... That would be the only way to fight the demonic army head-on, but they prefer to stay separate. What are these stupid politicians doing?

"I'm scared..." I speak by turning my attention to my friend. "What if the adventurers are summoned?"

"It's likely to happen in view of everything that's going on." Mary puts her hand on mine. "But should it occur, we will be together."

I hadn't even noticed, just the idea of the summons was enough for me to start shaking, but with it holding my hand I can calm down a bit. The war is messing with me more than I thought.

"You're my best friend." She says with a smile, "I consider you much more than my own sister, I will protect you no matter what the cost."

She showed great determination in her tone of voice, it wasn't something you usually hear from priests, so I end up dropping a slight laugh.

"I'm the one who should be saying this, after all, I'm the vanguard."

After that we both laughed for a while. Maria asked for more drinks with the excuse that today we should just keep celebrating, it is not time for sadness. I couldn't agree with her more.

~ A month later.

We are now in a small town, one of the few ports on this side of the continent, in view of the fact that there was no trade with the demonic continent.

A week ago here was the stage of a big battlefield, we were not fighting, but we could feel the battle in the air. Marks of battles on all sides, houses and burnt fields, many bodies could be seen, mostly human.

"As explained earlier to you." A man in great armor said, "If we leave the bodies here, we will have diseases being spread. Today we adventurers will take care of this."

The man speaking was the leader of the raid, the one designated by the guild leader as the chief adventurer. Unfortunately our group knew him well, we were from neighboring cities, his fame, different from his appearance, is not good.

Our job was simple. The vampires retreated some time ago, our soldiers would finally have a little rest, this has already happened several times, small times of peace between different conflicts. In that time we must remove the bodies, so it will avoid outbreaks of diseases in future battles.

"We're really on the front line," I say as I watch that whole scenario.

I am immersed in thoughts, looking at all that destruction, but I come back to myself when someone touches my shoulder.

"Come with me for a moment." The one next to me was Maria.

I'm guided behind a house that had been destroyed. Maria looked around to make sure we were alone. I don't think it's weird, they've happened before, probably something to do with your nobility.

"I'm thinking of running away from here." She talks by turning her attention to me.

I ended up being surprised by your words.

"Run away? What do you mean?" I ask a little louder than I should.

Noticing my tone below my voice. Does she really have any idea what could happen to us in case anyone finds out about us?

"You know the problem with my family." His voice was even lower. If we keep going this way, I'll end up being found.

She was right, unlike normal adventurers the high rank ones know nobles. It may just be a matter of time, maybe you already know she's here.

"You're right," I'm talking about the possibilities. "But if the four of us were to run away... it would be extremely difficult not to get caught."

Listening to me, Maria makes a strange expression. Stopping to think for a while she didn't talk about the other two, she's just talking about it with me.

"You want to leave the two behind..." Words end up coming out on their own.

"Chloe, I'm not gonna ask you to escape along with me." She starts talking softly, but it makes her voice firmer. "Of course it would be my wish, but that would be very selfish of me. If you want to come with me, I'll be waiting in the forest near the exit of the city, they left at seven in the morning."

We remained silent for a brief moment, none knew what to say next, but we decided to go back and start working, staying there too long would raise suspicions.

"Have you finally decided to help?" says Joe as we approach him.

"Shut up and help me," I'm talking about going towards a house.

I don't know if I can thank you, but thanks to the work we were doing I didn't have to worry about the conversation I had with Mary, there was no time for that.

The scene was horrifying, entire families dead, soldiers completely torn apart, were scenes that we were forced to see, even by looking away we could not escape, after all, the chance of something similar being in this other place was great.

I can't remember exactly how many times I threw up, I was having my first contact with the war, I had seen people killed by bears, something that happens when you're an adventurer, but that was different.

"There are civilians here, children...

"Are you all right?" Somebody's talking behind me.

His sudden appearance frightens me, it was lost in my thoughts again.

"No, I don't think I'll sleep for a few months." I can talk after I get my air back. "How about you?"

"There's no way to look good in that place," he says sitting next to me.

It was now time to rest, some groups were divided, I stayed with Kay. We spent some quiet time, we both knew what we thought, the best thing at the moment seemed to be silence.

"Actually, I'm thinking of doing something." He takes a little break, like he's thinking about it. "I'm probably going crazy."

"What?

After another long pause he talks.

"I'm thinking of enlisting." He looks at me with conviction. "I want to be a soldier."

"You what?"
