5 Entering The Forest!

Walking through the forest, Rick and I carefully inspected our surroundings, searching for that something that drove the wolves out of their dens and out of the forest. But so far, we only saw grass that was both short and tall, bushes that were both wide and narrow, trees that were so high that their tops were reaching for the skies themselves and the usual forest animals: birds, squirrels and many others. As for what we heard, we heard each other's footsteps, the leaves that rustled in the gentle breeze of the wind, birds that chirped every once in a while and the other sounds that the forest animals made.

"What do you think drove the wolves away from the forest?" Rick suddenly said, breaking the concert of the forest's various sounds.

I glanced at him with my right eye as he was walking from my right before opening my mouth and replying, "I don't know."

"Can't you guess?" he said and I felt a pair of eyes on me. I stopped and looked at him. He was looking at me.

"No. And don't bother guessing yourself." I looked away from him and continued walking ahead. He followed suit.

"Why?" he said not even a quarter of a second later.

"Guessing does more harm than good," I replied instantaneously.

"Why?" he replied instantaneously as well.

I sighed. "You first make a guess. Then you suddenly start to think that your guess is a fact. And finally, when you act on that guess, you either get lucky or get burned. And nine out of ten times you get burned."

"I guess you are right," he said after more than 10 seconds and dryly laughed. Then, we continued ahead.

After a few minutes of walking without talking, we suddenly stopped as a foul stench penetrated out nostrils. 'What is that foul stench?' I thought, and he vocalised my thoughts.

I shook my head. "I don't know, but it's not anything good."

"Let's go and find out!" he said and ran towards the stench. I followed closely behind him.

With our every step, the smell got fouler and sharper. All until it reached its foulest and sharpest form when the thing that gave off that stench appeared in our eyes. It was a wolf or its corpse to be exact, lying on the ground on its right side. Its belly had a huge gaping hole. Its innards were scattered around its corpse, like they were pulled out and thrown out by someone or something. And every piece of its scattered innards had flies swarming around them.

The horrendous sight made me sick to my stomach and it made me want to throw up. But I managed to hold it in and force it back inside. Rick, however, didn't have such luck. He vomited out his breakfast on the grass below his feet.

"Who—who did this?" Rick mumbled as he wiped the puke from his mouth.

I shook my head. "I don't know. But whatever it was. It was the reason why the wolves left this forest." Just after my last word left my mouth, the dead wolf's belly suddenly moved.

I frowned. 'Is there something in its belly?' I unsheathed my two weapons, holding one with each hand.

Rick looked at me. "What's wrong?" he said, but then a figure leapt out of the wolf's belly.

It was of the size of a ten-year-old human child and was completely naked. It had long sharp fingernails on both of its hands, long ears, sharp teeth and a long nose. Its eyes were the same as that of a reptile. Its skin was moss green and bumpy, but more than 70% of it was covered in blood.

I immediately knew what it was. It was a monster that was usual for any fantasy RPG. It was a goblin.

"*Kikiki!*, prey, *Kikiki!*" the goblin spoke in a high-pitched voice and charged towards me.

"Impossible! Monsters have not been seen for more than ten of thousands of years!" Rick shouted out while I prepared myself by tightening my grip on my two staves.

"We have to run now!" Rick's second shout came out of his mouth when the distance between me and the goblin became non-existent.

The monster struck towards my stomach with its bloody right-hand's claws, but I sidestepped to the left and dodged. Then, I quickly slashed with the stave in my right hand and then the stave in my left hand. Two damage numbers floated up above the goblin's head and the latter was a critical strike, > >.

"That hurt *Kikiki!* Kill! *Kikiki!*" the goblin screeched during which I stomped my foot down using the skill, as I gained enough rage from my last two attacks. More damage floated up above the goblin's head, > and the last of its health emptied out. It fell down to the ground dead and its body got enveloped in a golden glow. A few notification messages flashed in front of me.

I sighed with relief. 'This goblin was much faster than those wolves. If I didn't fight them first, I wouldn't have been able to dodge this goblin's attacks,' I thought as I sheathed my two staves. Then, I bent down and touched its corpse with my right hand and a loot window opened. In it was one item and it was copper coins. 10 of them. I tapped on them and they got looted.

Standing up, I looked at Rick. He was staring at me wide-eyed.

"Are you okay?" he said with concern in his voice.

"I am fine."

He nodded his head and breathed out a sigh of relief. "That's good. We have to go to the capital and report that in this forest there are monsters."

"I am continuing."

His eyes widened. "We can't! We will die! We have to leave! The black ones will deal with it!" he shouted out.

The black ones that Rick mentioned were the strongest knights of the tiger country. And their sole duty was to protect the tiger country from the most direst threats. I knew what they were, because they were introduced in one of the game's promotional videos along with the white knights who protected the dragon country of the human race from the most direst threats and the holy knights who protected the holy empire of the human race from the same kind of threats. There were also other promotional videos that introduced the other races' protectors.

"I am going ahead," I said. "You can go if you want."

Rick opened his mouth to say something, but he swallowed those words and said instead, "I will go with you if you are going. I won't be responsible for killing such rare beauty."
