399 Rifles, Pirates, and Theatre

While plans were underway to form a special task force to liberate the captured field agent from the hands of the Golden Horde. As well as the ongoing efforts of the Austrian intervention in Granada. Berengar had decided it was time to implement the replacement for the Needle Rifle.

This weapon would become the standard issue to his Jagdkommandos in the upcoming months. After all, special operations units like the Jagdkommandos and the Jaegers took priority when it came to the procurement of new equipment. Though it would later begin seeing service among more standardized troops.

This new rifle was a single shot, black powder bolt-action rifle and was primarily based upon the Mauser 1871, which was used by the German Army during the early days of their Empire in Berengar's past life. Though it was still a single-shot rifle, it was a vast improvement over the Needle Rifle, which was prone to fouling and parts breakage.

There was only one major alteration to the original design of the weapon, and that was the addition of an extractor on the bolt to aid in the speed of reloads. Berengar found the lack of such an important characteristic to be a fatal flaw in the original design. This was something that was addressed with the rifles that were retrofitted in 1884 of his past life, which Berengar was more than happy to copy for his rifle.

The Mauser 71 action was a simple bolt action with only single locking lug to support the underpowered black powder cartridge it shot. It was an efficient and reliable design that had served the German Army well during the early days of the Empire from Berengar's past life. Now it would serve his Kingdom in this life. The only other major alteration Berengar made to the design of this rifle was the addition of a 71/84 style bayonet, which was smaller, and more blade like than the original.

As for cosmetic differences, he planned to blue the steel components of the rifle and equip them with walnut stocks. As an American in his past life, he was a fan of this aesthetic style, as it was something commonly found on many old American rifles.

Berengar labeled the rifle as the Gewehr Model of 1422, or the G-22 for short. This was because Berengar intended for it to be introduced to service in a limited capacity this year, with the intent of the weapon to be used by his covert operators and later his standard infantry.

When it came to designing the cartridge, Berengar chose one that he was intently familiar with from his past life, which was the .45-70 Govt. The American Armed forces used this cartridge during the latter half of the 19th century, it was a stout and powerful black powder cartridge. It was also very close to the 11mm Mauser which was in use by the original Mauser 1871, however such a cartridge had practically become extinct by the 21st century which Berengar had previously lived in.

This was a cartridge that he had used in one of his old hunting rifles he had gained from a gun show, and had reloaded several thousand pieces of such ammunition. Thus, it was very easy for Berengar to draft a rudimentary design of the cartridge that would become a standard issue in his future infantry rifles and the next generation Schmidt guns.

The .45-70 Govt was a straight cased, and rimmed cartridge with a bullet diameter of .458 inches or 11.6mm. It had a neck diameter of .480 inches or 12.2mm, with a base diameter of .505 inches or 12.8mm. The rim diameter was .608 inches or 15.4mm and had a thickness of .070 inches or 53.5mm.

The bore of the rifle had a twist of 1-20 inches, which meant that for every full rotation of the bullet, 20 inches were used to achieve it. It had an effective range of out to 300 yards, and utilized a copper jacketed lead core bullet. Such a cartridge was more than enough for Berengar's troops to gun down the heavily armored knights of the era that his enemies still used in warfare.

Having designed the rifle that would soon be issued to his Jagdkommandos and later become standard to his conventional Army, Berengar laid back and relaxed in his office chair. He had done more than enough work for that day; with this in mind, he broke out the old skull chalice and poured himself some fortified wine.

As he drank from his chalice, he saw a particular sight enter his room. Honoria was dressed in a silk dress of the current fashion within Austria that was dyed purple, much like her hair. She had a sultry smile on her face as she approached her husband. Though Berengar did not know immediately what she had in mind, he could take a guess.

As she reached her husband's seat, she quickly hopped in his lap, nearly knocking the chair over as she did so. If not for Berengar's foresight and fast reflexes, the couple would have indeed smashed into the ground. However, after stabilizing himself, Berengar immediately asked his third wife why she was bugging him.

"So... I assume you have something to tell me?

Honoria quickly nodded her head, however in the very next moment, she kissed her husband; after they had separated, she began licking his neck, which Berengar found strange. After a while, he flicked her on the nose and asked her the question on his mind.

"What are you doing?"

Honoria's playfully prodded his chest with her dainty finger as she whispered in her husband's ear.

"Marking my territory, you reek of Linde's perfume!"

Berengar chuckled when he heard this before getting down to business.

"We can play later; tell me, what is so important that you have interrupted my progress?"

Honoria began to pout as she heard this before sighing. After she did so, she expressed the thoughts that troubled her mind.

"My crew wants to participate in the war against the Catholic Iberian Kingdoms, but I'm pregnant and can't enter the battlefield. So... I wanted to know what you thought about allowing Melissa to take over for the time being?"

Berengar thought about this for a few minutes before he broke into laughter; Honoria did not know how to react to this action and became slightly offended as she protested his attitude.

"What's so funny?"

Berengar calmed down after hearing this before responding to the princess' question.

"They're your crew. Do what you want with them. You don't need to ask for my permission on how to run your business..."

Upon hearing this, a broad smile appeared on Honoria's pretty face as she kissed Berengar on the cheek. After doing so, she hopped off his lap and ran towards the exit, leaving behind a single phrase.

"Thanks, daddy!"

After saying that, she disappeared from Berengar's sight, where he quickly downed the remaining contents of his fortified wine. After doing so, a single thought escaped from his lips.

"Looks like I'm going to need to break out the whiskey."

Having said this, Berengar spent some time drinking from a bottle of whiskey. Before long, another one of his wives entered the scene. It was none other than Adela, she had a series of documents in her hands which she proudly displayed before her husband.

Berengar placed his skull chalice down and took at look at the documents with a bit of confusion on his his face. He quickly asked for clarification on what he was reading.

"What is this?"

Adela smiled as she crossed her arms, in doing so she appeared rather smug when she answered her husband's question.

"These are drafts of some plays I intend to create when the Theatre Hall has finished its construction. The first one is a piece about Teutoburg forest, and the glorious victory our ancestors achieved over the Romans centuries ago."

Berengar nearly choked on his whiskey when he heard this. Such a piece of art could easily be twisted to his propaganda purposes. With this in mind, he quickly skimmed through its contents. The more he read it, the larger a smile appeared on his face. It would appear that his wife had a similar ideas as himself, as the ending was something that he greatly desired to witness.

Berengar immediately pulled out his stamp and added his approval to the documents before handing them back to Adela. After doing so, he gave her some words of encouragement.

"Adela, my dear, these are wonderful. The way you have rewritten the narrative to fit with my beliefs is incredible. I approve of any funding you may need to make this dream of yours a reality, and I look forward to the day the play is in our theaters."

Upon hearing her husband approve of her ideas, Adela smiled, before leaning in and kissing him on the lips, after doing so she responded with her innermost thoughts.

"It is something I should do as the High Queen of Austria. No matter what your goals are in life, I will support you in any way I can, it is just a pity that I am only talented at the arts..."

Upon hearing this, Berengar grasped ahold of Adela's dainty chin and gazed warmly into her eyes before comforting her about her abilities.

"Do not fret my dear, we can use art as a powerful tool of propaganda, and this play of yours will help spread my vision to the Austrian people, and perhaps Germany as a whole. Your talents are incredibly useful to my grand designs, and I look forward to the result."

Adela smiled fervently upon hearing her husband's praise before departing from the room, leaving Berengar to his own devices. He would spend the rest of the day going over various paperwork, and drinking himself to a point where he could no longer properly function in his job.
