Volume 1 - CH 11

Kamiyama-san eats a crepe

We came to a nearby park with crepes in our hands.

In my hand was a special crepe, five times the size of a normal crepe, filled to the brim with all kinds of fruit and whipped cream. It weighed 1.5 kilograms. The price was a hefty 2,500 yen.

I picked up a cherry at the top of the fruit pile and popped it into my mouth.

I said to give me the most expensive one, but I had no idea that such a thing existed on the menu. Two thousand and five hundred yen would be too much… for this month’s allowance…”

Arai-san spoke to me in a depressed tone.

“Don’t be so downhearted, Kominato-kun…”

I took a bite of the crepe.

“Arai-san…”

“You don’t like cherries… do you?”

No, yeah. I’m not sure what that has anything to do with this. I knew something was a little off, but thank you anyway.

Harusame-san also joins the conversation.

“What’s the matter, Kominato-kun? Oh, maybe you can’t eat that much? I’ll eat it for you if you’d like!”

I replied, “Do whatever you want!”

“Oh… you can also have some if you want?”

I shoved an oversized crepe at Harusame-san. I’ve never had much of a sweet tooth, to begin with. Just holding this much sweet stuff makes my stomach heavy.

The first thing you need to do is to make sure that you have a good idea of what you want to do.

“It’s so good…”

But I didn’t want to waste the crepe by giving it away for free, so I decided to tease Harusame-san a little.

“Oh, it’s a bit much for me… so you can eat the rest… even though I’m almost done with it.”

I emphasized that point just as the crepe was about to be eaten.

Harusame-san’s face turned red in an instant that it almost made a sound like a bong, and then she suddenly ran out screaming.

“A-chan! I’ve been… soiled…! Men are gross! I’m dirty! Kitana Minato!”

Arai-san, seeing this, hurriedly chased after Harusame-san.

“Wait, Harusame-san! I’m sure Kominato-kun takes a bath almost every day, not so much, but I don’t think he’s that dirty! So wait!”

I’ve noticed something recently. Arai-san is also still a little strange.

I wonder what she means by “almost” or “not so much”.

Sometimes she would say something out of the blue, or just plain say something like, “I’ll kill you.”, and sometimes she just says it without hesitation. I thought she was a kind, responsible, and honorable student, but I think she might be something else, something mysterious…

I was mildly shocked and slightly horrified, but then I recalled that, well, whatever.

I look next to me as I watch them move away. Next to me was Kamiyama-san, who was eating a delicious crepe.

She dexterously inserts the crepe from the hem of the paper bag, and the paper bag moves with a rustling sound. And the crepe that came out of the paper bag had cute tooth marks on it.

She eats dexterously, doesn’t she?

I asked Kamiyama-san with admiration.

“Kamiyama-san, is the crepe good?”

She was probably engrossed in her crepe, but she hurriedly turned the bear-patterned paper bag toward me.

“Ha-ha-ha-hai… yes! It’s delicious…”

Sweat drips from her hair, which is sticking out of the paper bag.

“I see.”

I spoke to Kamiyama-san, looking at the orange sky.

“Good work on your first day of club activities today.”

“… yeah… Kominato-kun too… good work…!”

“It’s good to have new friends.”

The paper bag was shaken vertically by Kamiyama-san who has a happy look on her face.

“It’s thanks to… Kominato-kun and… Arai-san… Thank you…

A warm spring breeze passes between us, and the petals of the falling cherry blossoms flutter in the air. The park at dusk was filled with a gentle spring air.

“Me too…”

Kamiyama-san quietly opened her mouth.

“I’m the same as… Harusame-chan, I wanted to do club activities together like this… and eat sweet things after school…”

I silently listen to Kamiyama-san’s story.

“I’ve had a lot of firsts since I became friends with Kominato-kun…

The spring breeze still carries cherry blossom petals.”

“First of all… I made friends… And I also did club activities… and also ate crepes…”

As if to confirm each of these things one by one, Kamiyama-san folded her long, white fingers and counted the number of times she had done so. I felt somewhat embarrassed and looked off into the distance. Across the park, Arai-san is chasing after Harusame-san, who is screaming and running.

After finishing a full count of what she had done so far, Kamiyama-san turned the paper bag towards me.

“So… Kominato-kun. I hope we can all continue to do lots of different things together and make… our high school life fun…”

A fun high school life, huh?

Ever since I was bound to Kamiyama-san on the day of the entrance ceremony, I was wondering what would happen to my high school life for a while. But now, I feel like every day is fulfilling to the extent that I can think that, well, this is okay.

“No… maybe… Kominato-kun…”

“No, it’s no good. Let’s make it a fun high school life…”

As I said this, I turned my gaze back to Kamiyama-san. There was Kamiyama-san with a large number of cherry blossom petals stuck to her bear-patterned paper bag.

The petals that danced in the wind stuck to the paper bag, which was damp with sweat.

Kamiyama-san looks at me and tilts her head with a laugh. I said to her.

“No, it’s nothing. That paper bag looks so spring-like and suits you.”

The paper bag, decorated with cherry blossom petals, is the most spring-like bag I’ve ever seen.

Kamiyama-san froze so stiffly that you can almost hear the pitter-patter, and sweat drips from her hair and uniform. As I watched her smilingly, another fluttering cherry blossom petal decorated her paper bag in front of my eyes.

Well, high school life like this is not so bad…

I was thinking about this in a daze as the spring breeze blew.
