Speech spirit.

After taking a rest at noon, Yang Hongjin was obedient enough to go to bed after eating noodles. Meanwhile, Cheng Yun, who had woken up, couldn’t fall asleep, so he pondered about the current situation by himself.

Perhaps heaven took pity on him, as when he crossed over, he was given a strange farming system called the Word Spirit Farming System. Cheng Yun studied it for a whole morning but could not fully understand its uses. He could only grasp a few points.

The system was divided into two parts, as its name suggested: the Word Spirit System and the Farming System.

The Word Spirit System allowed the user to obtain the effects of speech spirits, and it was divided into ten levels. At low levels, there were restrictions on using speech spirits, and as the system was upgraded, the effect of speech spirits became more potent, and the user’s restrictions became less.

Cheng Yun carefully read the system’s instructions and found that, except for things that were damaging to the heavens and the earth, such as murder and arson, speech spirits could be used in any other situation.

In the first level of the system, the effect of speech spirits was 10%, and the backlash was 90%. The user could use speech spirits once a month. After upgrading to the second level, the effect of speech spirits was 20%, and the backlash was 90%, and the number of uses increased as the system level increased. When it reached level eight, the user could use linguistic spirits twice a month. When the system reached the highest level of level ten, the user could use speech spirits twice a month, and the effect of linguistic spirits could reach 100%, with zero backlash.

The system gave an example that if Cheng Yun used speech spirits to say “ripe soon” to a vegetable, with a 10% effect, the vegetable would be able to sprout. If it was 100% effective, the vegetable would be ready to harvest immediately.

Cheng Yun fell silent at this point. Who would be so bored as to use speech spirits on a vegetable?

He continued reading and found another plant manual, which was divided into ordinary crops and special crops.

The ordinary crop manual contained hundreds of common vegetables, such as cabbage, potatoes, and cucumbers.

For each crop that Cheng Yun successfully planted, he could activate a manual, gaining two points. He could also use these crops to exchange for points, which could be used to upgrade the system and exchange for special crops.

The special crop manual was more interesting, containing crops such as Smart Beans, Cure Melons, Powerful Vegetables, and Hemostatic Grass, all of which had special functions.

For each level the user upgraded, they could exchange for three new crops. However, the exchange required a lot of accumulated points. Fortunately, upgrading the system only required reaching the corresponding point level, so Cheng Yun could use the points he earned from activating the manual to exchange for special crops.

As Cheng Yun looked at the names of the special crops on the manual, he had an idea. If he exchanged for Smart Beans and Intelligent Vegetables, and gave them to Yang Hongjin to eat, maybe he could cure his illness one day. With this thought in mind, Cheng Yun, who had no interest in farming or upgrading before, suddenly became enthusiastic.

He thought about it in his heart and came up with several ideas. He looked at the sky outside and realized that it was time for Yang Hongjin to stop work in the afternoon.

Sure enough, just as he had finished thinking, Yang Hongjin pushed open the door and walked out. When he saw Cheng Yun, he grinned and called out, “Wife!”

Yang Hongjin was tall and sturdy, with a handsome, sunny face that could easily be mistaken for a male model’s. He had straight eyebrows, bright eyes, and a straight nose, but the foolish grin on his face couldn’t be concealed.

But this was good news for Cheng Yun. In his previous life, Cheng Yun was gay, and he liked men but was afraid to come out of the closet. However, in this world, homosexuality was legal, and he didn’t have to worry about being exposed as a fraud when facing this silly giant.

Cheng Yun prepared a basin of water for Yang Hongjin to wash his face and gave him a towel to dry himself. After he obediently finished washing, he picked up his tools and said, “Wifey, I’m going to work.”

“Wait a minute.” Cheng Yun put on a straw hat and said, “I’ll go with you.”

Yang Hongjin grinned widely when he heard this, and Cheng Yun also smiled, patting him on the head and saying, “What are you grinning about?”

Yang Hongjin laughed foolishly and said, “Wifey, I’m happy!”

“Alright, let’s go,” Cheng Yun said helplessly.

As soon as they arrived in the field, Yang Hongjin began to work very diligently. Cheng Yun watched for a while but soon became dizzy from the heat rising from the ground and the sun overhead. This feeling made him feel like he was back in military training in college.

He shook his head and stopped thinking about the past, squatting down to study the farmland under his feet.

Their family now had two acres of land. According to the reference data provided by the farming system, if they alternated planting each year, they could produce about ten stones of rice, which Cheng Yun couldn’t really understand in terms of ancient units of measurement. So he asked the system to convert it for him. It was roughly two thousand kilograms, which would be enough for the two of them to eat for a year, with three to four hundred kilograms left over after the required amount was turned in.

With the memories of the original owner, Cheng Yun knew that at the current prices, about two hundred kilograms of rice could sell for about eight hundred wen. However, a soldier in the county only had a few hundred wen of military pay a month, and a pound of pork cost twenty wen. Taking all of this into account, it was impossible to become rich and prosperous by farming. This didn’t even take into account the reduction caused by natural disasters. They would be busy all year, but in the end, they could only make ends meet. In Cheng Yun’s eyes, this was not the right choice.

The botanical encyclopedia provided detailed information on each crop, including its yield and planting instructions. Cheng Yun sat in the shade of a large tree and carefully read through it in his consciousness.

Some vegetables, like cabbage and the like, are relatively easy to grow. They can be sown all year round except in winter, and can generally be harvested in about a month. However, since every household is growing these vegetables and they don’t sell for much, it’s only worth growing a little bit for personal consumption.

In the backyard of their house, there is a small plot of land. During his lunch break, Cheng Yun walked around and thought it would be a good idea to grow some regular vegetables that they can eat at home, and it wouldn’t be a problem to grow a few more varieties. However, for this large piece of farmland, reliable crops still need to be grown.

The points obtained by activating the illustrated book can be used not only to obtain special crops, but also to obtain seeds for common crops. Since winter is still some time away, Cheng Yun thought that he could get some vegetable seeds that could be harvested immediately, activate a few more illustrated books, and even if he enters the off-season during winter, he wouldn’t have to worry about not being able to do anything.

But without a harvest, he can’t free up any extra grain to exchange for points. They don’t have any spare money, so they can’t afford to buy other seeds, let alone meat. They can’t even afford to eat other vegetables.

Money, money, money, everything requires money, but the amount of money they have in their pockets is pitifully small. They can be considered the couple that the whole village dislikes and makes fun of. Apart from the few dozen cents Cheng’s mother gave them when they got married, and the one hundred cents his foolish elder brother gave them, they couldn’t squeeze out any more money.

One hundred cents sounds like a lot, but if they don’t spend it carefully, they’ll run out of money before the autumn harvest. They only have about ten or so kilograms of rice, and they can only last for about ten days even if they eat sparingly. They can’t rely on other people’s charity for the rest of their lives.

Cheng Yun Yue felt more and more melancholic, wishing to engrave the word “poor” on his forehead.

Their land was contributed by two families, so on both sides were family members. Yang Hongjin came out early, and after about a quarter of an hour, people from the other family also came out to work.

Cheng Yun glanced at others and then looked back at Yang Hongjin. He always felt that something was wrong.

He saw from afar that people from the Yang family had also come out. Besides Yang Hongjin who lived alone, there were three other men, including eleven-year-old Yang Hongbao, who also came to work. Seeing the tools, water, sweat towels, and straw hats they carried, Cheng Yun finally realized what was wrong.

Yang Hongcai looked over, and Cheng Yun was startled. He quickly called out to Yang Hongjin, “Brother, come over here.”

Yang Hongjin stood up and walked a few steps to Cheng Yun. “Wife?”

Seeing him sweating profusely, Cheng Yun raised his hand and wiped his forehead with his sleeve. “Is it hot?”

Yang Hongjin nodded honestly.

Cheng Yun asked him again, “What about your hat? Did you bring water with you?”

Yang Hongjin shook his head and said, “My brother and wife brought them.”

Although he spoke incoherently, Cheng Yun understood that his brother used to help him carry things, but now his wife did it for him. This was probably the result of Yang Hongcai’s instructions, but Cheng Yun’s memory was fragmented, and he was still trying to get used to it. He couldn’t recall this memory at lunchtime.

He glanced behind Yang Hongjin, and Yang Hongcai kept looking over here. Cheng Yun felt like he had been caught red-handed, and his friendly smile couldn’t be maintained.

He asked Yang Hongjin to take a break, but this simple-minded guy refused and said, “I haven’t finished yet, I won’t rest.” He stood there staring at Cheng Yun’s face, waiting for his wife’s instructions.

Cheng Yun had no choice but to give him the straw hat she brought and let him continue working. Then she hurried back and gathered some things needed for farming according to her memories. She then rushed back to the field.

When she returned to the field, Yang Hongcai had already walked over and was talking to Yang Hongjin. Cheng Yun felt uneasy, and Yang Hongcai noticed her. The two brothers stood there waiting for her to approach.

“Second brother,” Cheng Yun called out.

Yang Hongjin grinned and shouted, “Wife!” Cheng Yun pretended to hand him the water in her hand, wiped his sweat, and fed him water in front of Yang Hongcai.

Yang Hongcai wanted to say something, but he stood silently for a moment before patting Cheng Yun’s shoulder and saying, “You’ve worked hard,” and then turned around and went back to his own work.

Seeing this, Cheng Yun breathed a sigh of relief. When he had rushed out earlier in the afternoon, he had only been thinking about taking care of himself, but now that he had to take care of someone else, he hadn’t been able to get used to it in the half-day that had passed. Fortunately, this second brother was a reasonable person. Otherwise, if it had been his stepmother instead, she might have taken the opportunity to say something to him.

Yang Hongjin was still smiling foolishly at him, and Cheng Yun scolded him with a sweat towel and a glare, “Idiot.”

He looked up at the sky, the scorching sun making his eyes ache. He had to find a way to make money quickly. He couldn’t let this big fool at home suffer.

Author’s note:

This system might seem complicated, but you don’t need to remember too much. When it’s triggered later on, it will be explained again. Just know that it’s a useful tool~

This “useful tool” might look robust, but it’s not overly powerful in this plain farming-style story, so don’t worry about it.
