Chapter 153 - Is there a time limit for those wishes? (3)

She had clearly crossed an international border, but the language surprisingly hadn't changed.

Bei Nuan remembered now. The novel had said the border of this country was special with a complicated history. Most of the people at the border were originally from China, and people here often did business across the border. Due to the close connection, the schools here taught Mandarin instead of their country's national language.

Bei Nuan obediently raised her hands.

The other party were humans, not zombies. Lu Xingchi didn't attack. He raised his hands too.

The other group walked over, looked them over like they were looking at steamed buns in a restaurant, and seemed satisfied with how they looked.

"Don't be afraid, we're good people," one of them slowly said.

Most people that claimed to be good people weren't good people. If they were good people, why did they have their guns raised?

Neither Lu Xingchi nor Bei Nuan responded.

"We can take you to a safe place." This time, the speaker put down his gun.

As it turned out, these people also had a fondness for providing courier service like Lu Xingchi.

He smiled like the wolf pretending to be Red Riding Hood's grandma. "There aren't any zombies at our place. There's food and drinks. It's in the center of a lake, and zombies can't get to it."

Once he mentioned a lake, Bei Nuan knew who these people were. In the novel, when the team passed through this country, they had gone to that place. It was a base built on an island in the middle of a large lake.

These weren't good people. They came out to trick people to go to the island to serve as free laborers. They would get paid by the base for every person they tricked onto the island.

Next to her, Lu Xingchi suddenly spoke, "No zombies? And there's food too? Really?"

His tone was skeptical, but there was a hint of being pleasantly surprised too.

Bei Nuan: "..."

He was doing an excellent job of acting like a simpleton. He didn't seem like a person that had eaten braised prawns and stir-fry squid with pickled pepper at noon.

"That's right, it's very safe. We have everything too. Come with us." The conman smiled.

"There's a few more of us. They're in the tents over there." Lu Xingchi didn't forget to sell his teammates.

The conman's eyes lit up. "That's even better. The more the merrier."

Bei Nuan was sure that Lu Xingchi knew these people weren't up to any good, so what was wrong with him that he wanted to go with these people?

Since he wanted to go with them, Bei Nuan could only obediently follow him. She had come to terms with things. Somehow or other, they ended up going to all of the places the original team had gone to. They hadn't missed a single location.

Whatever, it was fine to go there. With Lu Xingchi around, she didn't have to bother worrying about their safety.

Bei Nuan was preoccupied over something else. The boat! They had finally gotten a boat. It was so precious! It was still on the ground. She hadn't been able to put it away in time.

There were so many eyes watching them. It would be too conspicuous if she put the boat into her pocket space now.

She hadn't said a word. Lu Xingchi lowered his head to look at her little face. By the light of the moon, he saw that her gaze was glued to their recently acquired boat.

Lu Xingchi couldn't hold back his smile.

The conman urged Lu Xingchi, "Let's go? Call them over?"

"Mhm." Lu Xingchi glanced at the conman's van, and the van's door suddenly slammed shut.

The sound was particularly clear in the quiet night. Everyone was startled.

"What was that?" Someone asked.

"I think…. It came from our van." Another person pointed at the van in horror as if he had seen a ghost.

They all saw what happened next. The van's door was slowly sliding open as if it was being pulled by an invisible hand. And then, the door was savagely slammed shut again as if someone was throwing a tantrum. And then, the door creepily began to slide open again.

It was almost pitch-black by the river side. A car door opening and closing by itself was like the beginning of a horror movie.

The head conman tried his best to control his expression and instructed a skinny man, "Go over there to take a look."

Grasping his gun, the skinny man reluctantly inched over there.

As Lu Xingchi created a diversion by pretending to be a ghost, he turned to look at the boat. Sure enough, the spot where the boat had been was now empty.

While everyone's attention had been on the van, Bei Nuan put the boat into her pocket space. Her little face was very content.

"N-No one here." The skinny man looked over the van and shouted.

That was scarier than if someone had been there.

Bei Nuan was very excited that she had gotten a boat, but since she couldn't express her joy, she decided to add fuel to Lu Xingchi's act.

"D-Did you guys see?" Bei Nuan suddenly spoke in a trembling voice. "D-Didn't there used to be a boat over here?"

Lu Xingchi: "..."

When the head conman saw the empty spot, his face instantly paled.

Trembling with fear, someone commented, "I-I think so."

"I think so too… It was one of those old wooden boats that was common decades ago?"

"What happened to the boat?"

Silence.

Adding fuel to the fire, Bei Nuan said in a trembling voice, "Could it be that there was something in the boat? I saw that water was dripping from the boat just now."

Bei Nuan paused and used a more panicky voice to say, "Why would water keep dripping from a boat that was parked on the shore?"

Bei Nuan was happily scaring people, but then, she was suddenly yanked into a warm and strong embrace.

She could feel the up and down movement of Lu Xingchi's chest as he gently spoke, "Don't be afraid. I'm here."

Bei Nuan: "..."

This guy had taken advantage of the moment to steal a hug.
