CH 113

It was the third month and the weeping willows had turned green, the sky was clear again today. Zhao Zhi got up early and went to his mother’s residence quarters.

Song Luan, who had just woken up, was having breakfast when she saw her son coming. She was delighted by the surprise but also somewhat startled.

After her son grew up, he had so much duties on his shoulders that he rarely ever got the time to come sit in her courtyard. He would keep everything in his heart, without speaking about it and even she, as his mother, couldn’t see through him.

Song Luan was very happy and smiled at him, “How come you came here?”

Zhao Zhi looked like usual, with his expressionless face, but the look in his eyes had actually softened a bit. He hesitated for a moment, before opening his mouth and saying softly, “Mother, last night did not scare you, right?”

Song Luan shook her head, “No.”

Originally, Song Luan had intended not to ask anything anymore, but she could not resist the curiosity in her heart, “Has your anger cooled down now ?”

Zhao Zhi lowered his eyes, “It’s a small matter, it’s already passed. It’s good that you didn’t get scared last night.”

Song Luan knew he was a sealed bottle with a sewed-off mouth. If he did not want to tell her about his matters, even if she asked him, he wouldn’t answer her.

“In the blink of an eye, you are already so big. You’re about to marry a wife and have children.”

Now that she thought about it, when he was still small, he was a soft and sweet little white bun, he would nestle on his uncle’s shoulder and wouldn’t even dare to talk to her.

Now he was able to hold up the sky.

She was on the verge of not being able to recognize her son anymore.

Zhao Zhi had breakfast along with her. Then the mother and son sat down together to play a game of chess.

Song Luan’s health wasn’t very good, so after a game of chess, she drove him away, saying she was going to go back to sleep.

At the end, she didn’t forget to remind Zhao Zhi, “The wedding date is about to be set, why haven’t you brought that girl from the Ming family to meet me?”

She also wanted to know what the girl her son admired looked like and what her temper was like.

Zhao Zhi said absentmindedly, “Mmh.”

He had nothing important to do today. As he passed by a pond in the garden, he stood quietly by the lotus pond for a while. A few lotus flowers had already bloomed. Looking at the scenery, Zhao Zhi suddenly became lost in thoughts. As he recalled the things that happened back in the beginning, he was now wondering if what he did then was right or wrong.

He wasn’t sure whether he could see it again in the future, that picture of her standing happily under the dazzling daylight and smiling at him, even once.

Zhao Zhi went back to his quarters but didn’t go see Ming Zhu. Sitting down, he drank a cup of tea without asking anything else but: “When did she get up?”

The little palace maid said, “Shortly after you got up. The miss didn’t sleep well and woke up from a nightmare.”

Zhao Zhi knew that she often had nightmares. She was clearly someone who didn’t dare to do anything bad, how come nightmares were always haunting her ?

Zhao Zhi hummed, “Did she eat breakfast?”

The palace maid shook her head: “The miss said she wasn’t hungry.”

Zhao Zhi ordered in a bland tone, “Have someone from the kitchen cook a red bean and lotus seed porridge for her.”

“Yes.”

Ming Zhu had indeed been frightened by a nightmare this morning. She was trapped in a room. As she lifted her head, she saw a coffin. Both sides were covered with white materials, hanging down, while the surrounding walls were all covered in blood.

Underneath the coffin, a group of people dressed in white were kneeling down. They were all familiar faces.

In the eerie night, she was so scared her legs felt weak, she just wanted to wake up as quickly as possible.

Zhao Zhi was dressed in black, as if he was one with the dark and cold night. He was sitting on the other side. On the corners of his mouth, an unconcerned smile was hanging. His cold eyes watched them, shaking like leaves.

He was holding a short dagger in his hand. The blade was still hot with fresh blood. His expression was mocking and ridiculing, as if he would use the dagger on whoever looked displeasing to his eyes.

Ming Zhu struggled to open her eyes and woke up slowly after breaking free from the nightmare. After getting up from bed, she desperately needed air to ease her tense mind.

When she came back to the room, Zhao Zhi saw her somewhat pale face and took hold of her icy-cold hands, “Are you still feeling dizzy?”

Ming Zhu shook her head, “No.”

But, last night, when she was in a muddled state, she said something to Zhao Zhi, and now really couldn’t remember clearly what she had said.

But it probably wasn’t anything that couldn’t be said. As she thought so, her body relaxed.

Zhao Zhi ordered someone to bring over the cooked red bean and lotus seed porridge, “Eat something first.”

Ming Zhu was made to sit on the chair. Looking at the fragrant and sweet red bean porridge, she wanted to refuse, “I’m not hungry.”

Zhao Zhi said in a warm voice, “I’ll take you out of the palace after you’re done eating.”

Ming Zhu picked up the bowl, blew on it and tasted it. She thought it tasted pretty good, so she ate two more bites.

But she really had the appetite of a cat. She hadn’t eaten much that already she felt full.

Zhao Zhi had always disliked her being too thin. He felt that every time he was having a meal with her, it was like feeding a small animal. He had to watch and make sure that she would finish the food in her bowl.

Ming Zhu finished the bowl of porridge and then got the opportunity to ask, “I heard that you sent the junzhu back to Xiangyang?”

Zhao Zhi said indifferently, “Mmh.”

When Ming Zhu discovered that she had been drugged last night, her suspicions fell on the junzhu, but she didn’t expect that she really had been the one who did it.

Ming Zhu made a low “oh” sound.

Zhao Zhi held her five fingers tightly, “I can’t take my eyes off you for even a moment.”

A moment of inattention and she would fall into other people’s traps.
