Chapter 91 90 - Surprise
Waking up the next morning, Milo got dressed and ready, before walking out to the living room part of his and Corinna's apartment. Corinna was sitting on the couch sipping a cup of coffee and watching the television. Apparently the Fellowship had been causing some trouble in Canada, and had been preventing gatecrashers from closing gates which caused beasts to break through the dimensional door and wreak havoc on some towns in the Ontario region.
Seeing the Fellowship on the move made Milo curious about how Mark was doing. His father who was taking care of him and his brother were killed when the Fellowship wiped Toronto off the map. Milo remembered the news reports. Rumors of people turning on their fellow man, corpses coming back from the dead and attacking the living and green flames swallowing up people and buildings alike all spread following the attack. No one knew if it was the Godfather or his Cardinals that coordinated the attack, but it had been from then on that the Fellowship had become a worldwide terrorist organization rather than just a cult religion that appeared following the dimensional doors' first appearance.
Eventually the news on the television returned to normal reports, such as weather, things happening in the community, and traffic. Since the dimensional doors opened and ability users began to emerge four years prior at this point, the news had begun to change a bit of what they covered. There were still the commonplace things, but following the first gate's appearance, there were now sections covering new gate and dungeon appearances, news about the various guilds, and more involving the gatecrashing profession. Sports had taken a major hit and weren't as popular now that super humans existed. Instead people preferred seeing gatecrashers in action. It was one thing Milo didn't think would change much that took a major change in direction.
Milo tried messaging Krista, but she didn't answer, which Milo thought was a little weird. He was expecting her to want to talk more about the previous night's activities. But guessed maybe she had something going on and couldn't respond. Eventually he went about his usual routine of working out. He then hopped in the shower as he had worked up quite the sweat working out in the summer sun. When he got back, Corinna had made some food so he grabbed a plate and ate with her.
Eventually the two finished eating and Corinna told Milo to get ready, "what for?" he asked.
"You start working at the Incubus guild next week," she said ,"We need to go get food that you can use to pack lunches."
Milo couldn't argue with her logic and went to put his shoes on. Eventually the two made it to the store and Milo picked out all the food that he'd need for gatecrashing. Trail Mix, Beef Jerky, granola bars, as well as all the things he'd need to make a sandwich. He also chose to purchase some sports drinks and water bottles to bring as well. Corinna went around doing some more shopping as well, since they needed to shop for groceries anyways. Eventually once Milo had picked out everything he'd need he met back up with Corinna who had a full shopping cart. Corinna asked him if he'd need a lunch box, and after thinking a bit he said it might be a good idea, so the two picked out a decent sized container that could hold his lunch and went to check out.
At this point Milo had all he could need and the two were on their way back to their apartment. While on the way, Corinna asked Milo if he had any idea on what kind of stuff he'd be doing at his internship but he was told he would find out when arriving at the guild headquarters his first day. He was hoping that of all the things he could get tasked with, that he would be closing gates.
Being stuck doing office work would drive him crazy and along with this, he wanted to achieve as much growth and gain as much experience in the gates as he could. Not only would this raise his stats, but his overall combat experience would allow him to be a more efficient fighter in the future.
Thinking about the fact that he could be closing gates for the summer, he decided to set some goals for himself, in terms of what level he hoped to achieve, as well as where he'd like his stats to be.

He was currently level 26 and as he raised his level he found that more and more experience was needed to raise it each time. Granted he had raised it without closing gates consistently, and depended on the lower rate of experience gain he got fighting beasts in the Sim Room on campus. Due to this he wanted to set himself an achievable goal rather than an unachievable one. He wanted to raise his level to level 35 during his internship, this all depended on him being sent out to close gates.
All his stats were reaching close to or above 50 and some of them were even higher when factoring in the bonus stats from his equipment while it was equipped. They would all increase by 9 when he achieved his goal, which Milo considered to be good growth. The one stat that didn't raise when leveling up had been stagnant at 30 for awhile now. His Magic Power stat was the stat that revealed the different system skills and also allowed him to use his abilities at a higher level. The system skills were still locked behind a level, but he wanted to reveal them so he'd have a name at least.
He went into his plunder tab and when looking at when the skills unlocked, he discovered that after getting his Magic Power stat to 5, every time it doubled he revealed a new skill; at 5 was Fusion, at 10 was Extortion, at 20 Larceny was revealed but was still locked behind level 50. Based on this he figured he would reveal another once his stat hit 40, and the last one at 80. Based on this, he chose to set his goal at 60, this would not only unveil the name of the next skill, but also get him one step closer to unveiling the last one.
Eventually he and Corinna arrived back at their apartment. Milo with his increased strength stat easily carried all the groceries and wouldn't allow Corinna to lift a finger, he looked a bit ridiculous carrying around all the bags for the groceries they bought but didn't care. Eventually The two made it all the way up to their door, and Corinna unlocked it entering their apartment.
As soon as the two entered, Krista along with a group of people he wasn't expecting to be in his home all jumped out and yelled, "Surprise!!"
Milo was taken aback and had no idea what was going on. Corinna then walked back in from the kitchen holding a cake with two candles in the shape of a 1 and a 7 planted on top. "Happy birthday dummy."

Milo had been so distracted with school, the festival, his provisional license exam, the reunion, and his internship he had completely forgotten it was his 17th birthday. In years past, he never really threw a birthday party because he wasn't very popular in school. Seeing all his friends there he gave a big smile and joined them in the festivities. Allana had used her brother's connections as the guild master of the Incubus guild to get access to the teleporters so that everyone could be there to surprise him. Milo smiled and enjoyed his birthday party with his friends, life was going good, he was getting stronger, he made new friends, and he would soon be starting an internship with a major guild. He hoped things would continue to go as well as they have been going so far.

"Yes, we now have to wait for the Cardinal's orders to commence the operation."

A group of hooded people sat around a table lit only by a single lamp hanging from the ceiling of the room they were in. Screams of pain could be heard in the background as they discussed the plan they were set to act on. A hologram of the Earth could be seen, and on North America an X could already be seen on Toronto, red dots could be seen marked across the continent in different locations. One of the markers read "New York City."
