Chapter 126 124 - Moving Forward
Milo was released from the hospital the next day, he was as healthy as he was before the attack, maybe even healthier thanks to the system. It was a miracle to the doctors who heard about how he was found following the attack. But after waking up, they kept him under observation for 24 hours and he showed no symptoms of anything bad, so they couldn't keep him any longer.
After getting out, Milo was quick to return to the Incubus Guild headquarters, it had been outside of the area where the Fellowship attacked so it was left unscathed. Milo and Krista took a teleporter at the association headquarters and got a taxi to take them to the guild from there. While riding through the city, Milo took note of the destruction left in the wake of the attack. It was definitely a day that would be put in the history books. The president of the United States had already announced that it would be a day that would be remembered each year, as a day where the American people triumphed over evil.
As the taxi he was riding in made its way through the war torn streets, Milo saw hundreds of memorials lining the road. This caused him to slip into sadness a bit as it brought memories of Corinna to his mind. Krista who was with him put her hand on his shoulder attempting to console him. Like Milo, Corinna was someone who was important to Krista, she was like a big sister and Corinna's death brought nearly as much despair to her as it did her best friend. It wouldn't be the same to come home without her being there to ask them how their day had gone. Eventually the taxi had pulled up to the front of the guild building and the two friends made their way inside.
When they got up to the right floor, they entered to see Alucard flying around the room carrying what appeared to be a holo. Conner was chasing the snake around in annoyance because his holo had been taken. Milo could sense the feeling of mischievous glee that Alucard was feeling thanks to his Beast Whisperer ability, causing him to laugh for the first time in days.
Hearing Milo's laugh, the rest of the team turned to see that their intern wonderboy had returned. Some of the girls on the team had tears in their eyes seeing he was alright, Harvey had mentioned the state Milo was left in when they arrived at the refugee camp and it left a scary thought in their mind. Speaking of Harvey, he ran forward and picked Milo up in a bear hug. After nearly squeezing the life out of him, he remembered Milo's condition before the hospital and gently set him down. After catching his breath, Milo smiled seeing that everyone was still there, it would have been another large blow if any of his team members had died during the Fellowship subjugation.
Alucard seeing his master enter dropped the holo he was carrying and made a beeline for Milo wrapping himself around Milo's neck and nuzzling him, once again causing Milo to struggle for air.
"I'm so happy you are alright master, I did as you asked and kept those women alive," Alucard spoke into Milo's head.
Right before taking on the Fellowship, Milo ordered Alucard to protect Krista and her mom at all costs, and he had followed through. Milo rubbed Alucard's chin, thanking him for doing what he asked, he'd have to reward the beast for following through. If he had lost Krista along with Corinna, Milo may have lost it for good. Milo then introduced Krista to his team, and asked them what they dealt with during the fight with the Fellowship.
Hearing them retell their experience during the attack, Milo realized how bad everyone had it. The Fellowship showed no restraint and wanted to inflict maximum damage to the city, had Milo not been there to fight them at the refugee camp and stop the cardinal they may have succeeded in doing a repeat of Toronto. The team then began to ask how much time Milo had before leaving for school. This was when David and Jorge made their appearance. There was also a face that Milo and Krista were quite familiar with.
Allana rushed forward and pulled the two into a bearhug. Milo had the air squeezed out of him for a third time. "I missed you guys so much, thank god you both made it through the attack," Allana said with tears in her eyes.
Alucard had apparently met her while he was staying with the guild members. Allana and her parents had been staying at the guild headquarters since the attack to be near Jorge, he didn't want to take any chances in case the Fellowship came in with a secondary attack. This annoyed Allana but seeing her interact with Jorge it was obvious the two were brother and sister and Jorge was extremely protective of her. David and Jorge asked if they could meet with Milo in private, Milo nodded and the three of them made their way up to Jorge's office. When they entered they all took a seat and Jorge started talking.
"First things first, I wanted to thank you for your good work over the past few months, your growth as a gatecrasher has been a wonder to watch and I know you'll do great things in the future," he said. "I want to apologize for our late appearance at the refugee camp, had we been there faster we may have been able to save more people, for this reason we would like to offer our support with whatever you may need, if you ever need our support please give me or David a call, we will do everything in our power to be there."
Milo was expecting this as Krista had mentioned that they wanted to cover the costs for Corinna's funeral.
"I also know you will be leaving for the academy in a week's time so for that reason we want you to get the rest you deserve after working so hard, not only for the assignment in Atlantic City, but also for your work in defeating the Fellowship. With that being said, you are more than welcome to use the guild's facilities and we have also put aside dorms for you, your friend and her mother to use."
Milo was grateful to them for everything they had done for him. They recognized his talents from day one and placed him on a strike squad so that he could experience gates firsthand. They had given him a leadership role as a student when there were probably more qualified people for the job. They called Mikael to allow him to learn even further and make him an even better gatecrasher. Overall they had invested a lot in Milo and Milo wouldn't forget their support. Not only this but Milo had made many new relationships after joining the guild as an intern.
He thanked them again before returning to Krista, Allana, Alucard and his team mates.
"That kid has a bright future," Jorge said after Milo had left the room, "to be able to push forward after going through so much at his age is a feat in itself. Soldier on young man, soldier on."
Once he returned the team held a sort of party for Milo, this was Krista's idea as she wanted Milo to have a day where he could let loose and forget about what had happened over the last few days. Milo did just this as he decided to unwind, Krista was happy seeing that Milo could still smile after being put through hell during his fight with the Fellowship. His mental fortitude was something she greatly admired and seeing the strong face he had on at all times crack at the hospital the day before had caused her to hurt a great deal.
As the festivities calmed down, Milo excused himself early, he was having a good time but there were some things with the system he wanted to experiment with, as well as get some alone time as he hadn't had any since getting out of the hospital. Once he got to the dorm room that Jorge had set aside for him, he entered and took in the contents of the room. It was very similar to the dorms at the academy, but was a bit more luxurious with a bigger bed, a TV and a great view of the city. Looking out at the skyline, it was strange to see the buildings in the distance that looked damaged and destroyed but it would take some time before the city could be returned to normal. Thanks to the help of abilities it'd be faster than in the past but it would still take time nonetheless.
