Chapter 89.1 – Thin and Frail Body

The Emperor’s birthday was on the 20th of May. The palace started becoming busy a few days earlier, and the preparations were ready by the time the date came.

Fifty years was a sign of longevity, and many envoys from other countries came to give their congratulations. Hence, a big event had to be held in the palace. The Emperor held a banquet in Xuande Hall, to let his sons and grandchildren mingle with the important envoys and the officials, and show them a good time that reflected the country’s majesty.

After news that envoys were coming to the capital to congratulate the Emperor, the worries of the kings due to the birthday gift were greatly reduced – in front of the foreign envoys, the Emperor would not feel that the birthday gifts his children prepared were too extravagant, especially when celebrating the fifty years of longevity.

The kings no longer cared about the Crown Prince and Qi Yang’s birthday gifts, and used their power to collect some good stuff.

When the Longevity Festival came, all the kings were filled with self-satisfaction. They all thought that the birthday gift they had prepared were better than their brothers’, and they would be able to show off in front of the officials and foreign envoys.

Qi Yang found it amusing and shook her head, saying to Lu Qipei, “As the Emperor, Royal Father sits on top of the whole world. What good things had he never seen, and what would he want that he couldn’t obtain? But those brothers of mine think that Royal Father is being frugal and have never seen the good stuff?”

Lu Qipei also smiled, but didn’t say anything. It was one thing whether the Emperor liked it or not, but in front of the foreign envoys, how valuable the gift was also mattered.

There was nothing wrong with the Bodhisattva that Qi Yang brought; her filial piety was commendable. But if all the kings were like her and sent something that was thoughtful but of no value, outsiders would think that Liang was poor, that even the Emperor’s birthday gift was so half-hearted.

The two wrote a carriage to the palace for the banquet, bringing their birthday gift while chatting and laughing.

The carriage was stopped by the royal guards when it reached the palace gates, and the coachman handed them a token to show his identity. During this stop, there was a commotion outside. Qi Yang lifted the carriage’s curtain and saw someone getting in trouble with the royal guards outside the gate.

The royal guards protected the royal capital; who would dare to get in trouble with them outside the palace gates? Qi Yang had never seen someone so daring.

She had also never seen the royal guards being so patient. After being pestered for a long time, they still did not draw their sword, and just blocked the person outside the palace.

Out of curiosity, Qi Yang took another look at the scene. This time, she found out that the one who was being blocked outside the palace was no other than the former King Chu, who had been stripped of his title and demoted to a commoner a month ago!

Lu Qipei saw her lift the curtain and continue staring outside, so she also leaned over and asked, “What is it? What are you looking it?”

Qi Yang turned aside to let Lu Qipei see outside, and said, “It’s Fifth Royal Brother. It seems that he has prepared a birthday gift and wanted to go to the palace to present it to Royal Father. But now he has a different status, he’s neither a noble nor does he have an invitation, so the royal guards stopped him from entering.”

The purpose of the Fifth Prince’s birthday gift today was obvious – to please the Emperor. If he was lucky, it might be an opportunity to regain his title. If he was unlucky, at least the Emperor would still remember this son’s existence.

He was also unlucky. He had left the palace to build his own mansion for many years. Although his Mother Consort was in the palace, her position wasn’t high and she couldn’t get in touch with him, so she couldn’t help with the birthday gift.

Nanping also cut off contact with him after he completely lost his power, and he was unable to send the birthday gift he had prepared. He had no choice but to come to the gates of the palace to try his luck today. Of course, he was stopped outside the gate by the royal guards, and his identity of prince was useless.

Qi Yang looked at the Fifth Prince’s embarrassing appearance, and sighed. After thinking for a while, she said to the royal guard outside the carriage, “For Fifth Royal Brother to be blocked outside the palace gates is a bit inappropriate. If the envoys from other countries saw it, they would thing that it’s ridiculous. Go tell him to leave the birthday gift, then kowtow to Royal Father three times outside the palace gates to celebrate his birthday, then go back.”

When the royal guard received those words, he also felt relieved. He looked at his commander’s expression, then went to speak to the Fifth Prince.

The Fifth Prince was stunned when he heard it. When he gazed back at Qi Yang’s carriage, he had a very subtle look. But he knew the reality of the situation; even though he was downtrodden, he still understood clearly how bad his situation was right now.

After taking back his gaze, he handed over the birthday gift, then lifted his robes and kowtowed three times in the direction of Xuanshi Hall.

Qi Yang also didn’t care what the Fifth Prince thought of her. When the situation was over, she also put down the curtain.

The royal guard had already checked her identity, and saw the princess’s prince consort with his own eyes. Naturally, he let them pass, and the coachman drove past the palace gates.
